Silverstaff: Bucky Katt: With all the paid shills, there's already too much trolling here. Why do have to add to it?

I always wondered, how do you get a job as a paid shill? I mean, paid to go on Facebook and Twitter and Fark and Reddit and all these other websites and social media platforms and mindlessly spout the party line, insult the other side, and try to fake there being more than just one of you?

We know they are out there, but it's not like they advertise for it in help wanted sections.

Is this some kind of work-from-home rehab program for the brain damaged? A part-time job for an entire chapter of Young Republicans?

I think there are political PR agencies which manage the initial lock-step of messages, but it's probably a much smaller operation than you might think, I'm afraid. The believers, you must understand, are permanently open to the messages, without pause or intervention for critical thought.

It would be interesting to know more about the trickledown.

You want the government to control almost 20% of our economy, under a pinko presidency? Download the bill, read it, or at least skim it like I did. Search for the words hospice and tax, and see how you feel. We will be waiting to see doctors, since many of them will not be able to afford to keep their practices open. Anything Obama touches turns to shiat. Why should this be any different? Before you answer, look at the amount of executive orders he has issued, and read them. Uh-huh.....

Exactly. He's never going to frighten liberals talking like that. I say it this way: Count the number of items in the PPACA that are "... to be determined by the Secretary of Health and Human Services". Then think about how long Kathleen Sebelius is going to have that job in a Republican administration. Let the screaming commence.

Welp I got some bad news for you:

Bad News 1: It looks like the dems are taking the senate no matter what and there is NO way they are going to dismantle the signature piece of legislation they have spent 50 years working on.

Bad news 2: after the worst week in Obama's campaign now the bleeding has stopped and has begun to reverse, even at his lowest point he still had a 5-6 point lead in ohio and has a massive lead in the early voting. Romney is not going to win without Ohio.

Bad news 3: Do you think it is likely even if Romney squeaks by, that your fair-haired golden boy is going to repeal obama care? He pretty much said he is planning on keeping most of the provisions.

Obamacare was written by a committee that doesnt understand it, passed by a congress that didnt read it, signed by a president who smokes, with funding administered by a treasury chief who didnt pay his taxes, overseen by a surgeon general who is obese and financed by a country that's broke.

Pinkos eh?

60% of healthcare in this country is already run by gov't, Many people seemed ok with this until the Affordable Healthcare Act. This is because they have admin. costs around 3 %. The Affordable Healthcare Act has a provision in it that requires insurance co.s to pay up to 15% in admin costs. Previously they were at 25-30% this results in savings and still has people covered who were unable to get insurance before due to draconian insurance company rules (pre-existing congenital conditions etc.).

So a bill that regulates insurance co.s and has taxpayers including small businesses receive a tax credit, lowers the cost of healthcare - 60% of which is already paid for by the government and was until the scary black man took office when no one seemed to give a fark about the cost of healthcare or its denial of coverage. This is communism to you??? Regulating insurance companies??? With a plan which republicans came up with???

Dude, Obamacare was so 2010. the Supreme court has ruled, it is constitutional and it's not going anywhere. It's also becoming more popular evey passing year, within five years it will be de rigeur and in 10 years it will be as entrenched as Medicare. You need to move on.

Also, out of curiosity... Are you against medicare? Because that program is FAR more socialist than Obamacare.

shower_in_my_socks: Summoner101: New PPP Ohio poll has Obama +5

Thanks for the link. Not only is Obama a 5 point favorite, but he's above 50%, and these results are nearly identical to CNN and NBC polls from a few days ago. It seems that between OH, MI, WI, NV, etc. that Obama's "electoral firewall" is holding.

I doubt we'll get another Obama no-show at the remaining debates, so it comes down to whether or not Romney's strategy to save his big ad blitz for the final 3 weeks was a good idea.

Sounds about as brilliant as Rudolph Giuliani waiting to spend all his ad money in Florida in the hopes that that would somehow win him the GOP nomination off of that one state.

You know why Romney is 'waiting until the very end' to run most of his ads, right? Its because his campaign is nearly broke.

Romney just had to borrow $20 million from the government just to keep his campaign afloat.

Dwight_Yeast: elchip: What I don't get is that if The ModelTM fluctuates with the polls and events like the conventions and the debate... what's the point of even having The Model?TM It has little predictive power because it's a victim of the situation on the ground.

Nate Silver is not Hari Seldon.

Maybe he's not, but he shows humanity moving in that direction. And Seldon's Psycho-history wasn't absolute; it was all about percentages (an idea they stole for Quantum Leap).

The other important aspect is that analyzing something and acting on the results alters the situation being analyzed. A known problem on Wall St for decades. And in economics. Etc.

It's a good point: if Hari Seldon's predictions had been on a popular website that people checked in with daily, it would have become a huge influence on events itself. There is a reason the Second Foundation is hidden.

shower_in_my_socks: James F. Campbell: In the past, debates have had little or no influence -- so what's the big deal about them now?

The media needed a big story to make the race tight, and they got it. Half of Romney's bump is due to the over-the-top media coverage of the first debate. The story SHOULD have been "Romney just completely reversed half of his platform in 90-minutes," but that would have led us into Obama landslide territory, and dammit we have ratings wars to win here, people.

I feel like the media totally drove this story as well. 538 pointed out there was one firm (google actually I think) that polled poeple during the debate and then afterwards. Those polled during the debate felt it was a wash. Those polled after, when the media was going nuts about how awful Obama had been, thought Romney one.

Most people don't watch debates (and the people that do probably tend to be more informed voters who are less likely to change sides at this late stage). So most people get their impressions of the debate from the media.

Cognitive dissonance is the uncomfortable sensation one experiences in their head when new evidence contradicts held belief.

It's not a parroted line, a hypocrisy, or a lapse in logic. It also doesn't work for hollow or coded arguments - if I say "Obama's a socialist" because I know I'll be skewered if I say "Obama's black", you can define socialism to me all day long and it won't matter. "I know a socialist when I see one," I'll say - and it's true: Obama will still _clearly_ be black. No cognitive dissonance will occur.

2012-10-14 01:53:20 PM
One has to wonder if the media's attempt to make this a close race is to cover for the GOP's obviously failed 'make Obama a wildly unpopular President.' He's obviously still liked by a lot of people, and the stench of the Dubya Economy is evading him like none other. The GOP has to be worried since the only weapon they really had left was the media, and now it's unable to really change public opinion to whatever they want.

The Republicans are starting to realize they have wildly overstepped. Whether or not the Democrats under Obama will let them take back various parts of their platform they threw away for the Religious Right is a very interesting question.

"Engagement proxies' are the Internet's parasites. First Googlle hit.

Guntram Shatterhand: One has to wonder if the media's attempt to make this a close race is to cover for the GOP's obviously failed 'make Obama a wildly unpopular President.' He's obviously still liked by a lot of people, and the stench of the Dubya Economy is evading him like none other. The GOP has to be worried since the only weapon they really had left was the media, and now it's unable to really change public opinion to whatever they want.

The parts that did the most damage were the ones they threw away for the corporate kleptocrats.

I honestly wouldn't mind their welfare-gutting if it was replaced with jobs programs and public works projects, it screws single parents, but that's a sacrifice I'm willing to force others to make. There are also alternative methods of helping the helpless that would improve their situation while not being the "immoral" (eyeroll) handouts. Problem is they don't want that, they want to starve the peasants and laugh at them while giving bigger and bigger handouts to the already-rich.

Thomas Jefferson won reelection against the Federalist candidate?

Almost there, give it another shot.

Study it out.

I used to attend farm auctions. One auctioneer would yell out, "Study your lesson! You're not LISSNIN'!" if he wasn't getting bids fast enough. Another shouted, "Plow's in the ground; gotta WORK!"

That's what "study it out" makes me think of.

I must have missed the source of that 'study it out' phrase. It doesn't even make sense.
