And you can put them on anything. Even roads.

Uh, maybe I'm stupid or something, but if you're etching a barcode into something, why not use the barcode as a barcode? Why force your user to buy a mic, hook it to the computer, ensure that the software is running, shush the class, run your finger over the camera/advance widget, and then continue the lesson? Why not just use a smart phone with a QR reader?

I'm doubting the usefulness of this too. I was figuring it was some sort of sound-only communication (which still seems dubious), but yeah...if it takes physical space...just use a damn bar code. Despite the hate, QR codes do that pretty damn well.

Yeah, I'll file this under brilliant idea that has no use in the real world.

There would need to be some uniformity in the speed of which you dragged the object across the acoustic barcode, I'd imagine. Interesting idea, though it really just reminded me of the mechanics behind a fax tone. Perhaps it could be used as a lock (password) sound if it was part of an innocuous enough object.

Marked under, things I do not want to hear now.

/There's a highway in California or Arizona that, when driven across, will play a song.

Chalk me up for another one not seeing the point. This seems worse than both QR codes and NFC tags.

Yeah, or even a player piano roll.

Great, now the typical 2 minute mp3 can be encoded into 64 miles.

Are you kidding?

I'll print an acoustic code on ribbed condoms, then I can tweet whenever I get lucky! Sell variety packs with random codes, each code has a funny yet unexpected tweet.

//now accepting submissions for the messages
//extra points if an incomplete message results in funny and embarrassing tweets for those who don't roll out to the serial number
