The EMS chief's name is Jerald James. He needs to be kicked in the nuts and then fired, and then kicked in the nuts a couple more times. He clearly has no EMS experience and is unqualified for his position.

The real tragedy

That blanket only had 2 more weeks until it retired

You'd think that being a Detroit EMT was punishment enough.

Stay classy, Detroit.

dahmers love zombie: You'd think that being a Detroit EMT was punishment enough.

You'd think having to live in Detroit was punishment enough.

Give a man a blanket, and you'll keep him warm for the night.

Set a man on fire, and you keep him warm for the rest of his life.

OK but when this elderly victim dies of smallpox in a few weeks how many of you will apologize to the Detroit FD ?

Back it up Francis, this IS exactly why the actual evildoower that hired the asshat hired him.

Head up the foodchain.

He should have lent the blanket instead.

2012-10-13 03:55:52 PM
Bill him for the damn blanket. Done. You've said he is being punished. There is nothing less to do, and anything more would be ridiculous. But, you know what, you'll still look like heartless morons, and he'll still be a good guy. Only other option is to drop this altogether, but this means giving away blankets is appropriate based on the situation... and you clearly don't want that.

Isn't blanket one of Michael Jackson's 'kids'?

2012-10-13 03:59:10 PM
If they're not supposed to give donated blankets to cold people, why the hell do they blankets at all?

2012-10-13 04:00:35 PM
By now, the department has a pretty good idea that they're in for a P.R. shiatstorm if the punishment is upheld, so I have faith that they'll drop this matter. But I've been proven wrong before, so who knows.

2012-10-13 04:01:08 PM
Who says he "gave" the blanket to him? When you are serviced by an EMT and out in a gurney, is he "giving" you the gurney? Are you being "given" the ambulance that you ride in? Or are you just using these items for a short time until the service period is over? Wouldn't the old geezer be expected to surrender the blanket back to the EMT just as he would be expected to surrender the gurney?

Fire damages: several thousand dollars. Blanket: $14.88. Making yourself look like heartless bureaucrats: priceless.

No it's the libs who are anti-charity and the libs also have a lock on bureaucracy. And, I'm sure the fire chief in DETROIT is a lib.

From TFA According to the Detroit News, the department brings in $8 million less than its operating budget

So the Fire Department is supposed to be a profit center???

Michigan have a Good Samaritan Act?

As a trained first aid attendant I would look at this a preventing further injury (pneumonia, etc.); that's your JOB isn't it?

2012-10-13 04:10:04 PM
I suffer from just-world syndrome so it seems obvious to me that the so-called "old man in his underwear" was actually a child-raping terrorist, and the paramedic nothing more than a drug-using liberal out to give more freebies to his Obama-loving comrades.

I hate that shait. A better headline would have been: "Commie socialist EMT fired for giving state owned blanket to someone who had nothing"

2012-10-13 04:34:58 PM
The EMT's union will almost certainly pay for a lawyer to fight this, so how many thousands of dollars is the city going to have to expend on lawyers, administrators, supervisors, experts, and probably court time to bring a case against this guy over a donated blanket that couldn't have been worth more than $20? I hope some reporter starts asking those kinds of questions.

Headline: "Paramedic Punished for Giving Blanket to Cold Elderly Fire Survivor"

I think they mean he was an elderly cold fire survivor.

Nothing good comes of public unions and there is no reason why any public worker would need one.

I learned that on fark.

That fire was 75 years old. Have some respect.

2012-10-13 04:51:24 PM
Yeah, well, when you read the rest of the story and learn that the blank was on fire at the time, it makes a bit more sense, doesn't it?

Journalists should be sued for malpractice when they deliberately tell only half the story.

2012-10-13 04:52:26 PM
from TFA: The city's EMS is battling several problems in relation to its lack of cash, including being understaffed and using out-of-date ambulances. According to the Detroit News, the department brings in $8 million less than its operating budget, due to the number of uninsured Detroit residents who are unable to pay for services rendered.

if only there was a government program that made sure everyone was properly insured. Some sort of affordable care act if would end the problems of using donated blankets to keep people warm

Seriously, WTF is going on in the comments to TFA, and how is this Obama's fault.

Way, way back I was an EMT for a service in a mid-sized midwestern city. It was my first job for an ambulance service, and it was one of those outfits that spends most of their time hauling old folks from the nursing home to the hospital or the other way around. Not one member of the management of that place had any EMS experience whatsoever. They had experience in creating invoices and that was about it. People were way more concerned whether you billed each individual pair of gloves than if you managed to give appropriate care. This article is something those people would do.

The next place I worked, the EMS supervisor was actually a respiratory therapist. Cost savings, you see..roll EMS under RT and then you can use EMTs as RT techs while they're not running calls. That was at a hospital-based service that also ran the 911 calls for our county and areas inside the borders of the adjoining counties. These people would also have done something like in TFA.

The only good ambulance service I ever worked for was privately run with the county 911 contract...but it was owned by a guy that was one of the first hundred medics certified by the state. THAT place was run with compassion toward the patients, and the supervisor would actually back you up when you refused to do something that had more potential harm than potential good...like the nursing home that wanted a patient taken 80 miles up the road in a blinding snowstorm and 100% snow/ice coverage on the roads for something a local doc could look at right there at the home sometime within the next day or two and not be a problem (which is what happened, after the roads were passable, and it wasn't a problem). The prior two services? They'd have said get her, and don't wreck the rig in this weather. Hurry back, there are a lot of wrecks out there tonight!

/EMTs are great
//Their bosses are usually clueless

2012-10-13 05:06:13 PM
I bet the Detroit EMS now wishes they had just left this one alone right about now...

2012-10-13 05:08:13 PM
I blame the unions..........................and Obama.............it's Obama, but mostly that union thing.

2012-10-13 05:09:59 PM
Let's spend hundreds of millions of dollars on fighter jets that serve no purpose but we can't properly equip paramedics. What a country!
