(Think Progress)   For their upcoming cross-promotion with Disney, Barneys is turning Minnie Mouse into a 5'11", rail-thin model. Apparently some people have a problem with this   (thinkprogress.org) divider line 31

Models used to be the Betty Paige, curvy voluptuos type. People paid more attention to the figures than the clothes. So we have walking coat hangers. I don't get 'high fashion' anyway. The clothing is usually horribly ugly, not functional, and uncomfortable, and not flattering to a not-walking-coat-rack.

Does anyone really thing the average (not underwear or swimsuit) model is attractive? They should be setting off all sorts of unhealthy evolutionary alarm bells due starvation/sickness/etc.

People actually think there is some evil conspiracy going on; but there isn't. Media reflects what people want to see, not the other way around.

No one is suggesting an evil conspiracy. This is simply a case of people who aren't attracted to females using anorexic women as walking coat-hangers because that makes more sense to them than having a curvy chick drawing attention away from the wacky clothes.

I'd rather be full of cheeseburgers than full of shiat.

This is stupid in so many ways. If you've sacrificed the time and expense to gain the rights to use Disney characters, you don't pointlessly fark up the characters until they're unrecognizable. The stockholders should build a pyre out of these idiots' expense reports and publicly burn them alive on it.

On the other side of the debate, you don't piss and moan about how altering Minnie Mouse will have negative effects on the self esteem of young girls. If there's any girl who defines the perfect body shape as looking just like Minnie Mouse, she's already beyond help.

fark this store. Seriously. And I think the super thin models can be pretty. What makes me angry about it is that they bastardized an existing character to say "this is better than the way she originally was." If they wanted a rail thin cartoon character, those exist. To dump the (only mildly plump) original design in favor of this sends an absolutely disgusting message.

It always comes down to blaming men somehow doesn't it. Guess what, there are PLENTY of women in charge in the fashion and magazine industries. Women are also the primary consumers.

Most everyone can be fit and toned. Not everyone can safely be a size zero or negative sizes...or whatever the hell the fashion industries size as the lowest obtainable size. I'm a mesomorph and toned at a 6. I would probably die if i tried to get down to a zero and maintain it. Or be a just above death skeleton with my wide ass hips jutting out and stabbing people. Mothers need to tell their girls "look sweetie, just because she can do it, doesn't mean that you can or should". of course, girls don't listen to their mothers if they think their moms are fat.

The point is, someone with authority, somewhere needs to tell little girls / teenagers / grown ass women that it's ok to not see one's skeleton if they're wearing a bikini. And if clothes aren't designed to look good on women above a zero, then they're not worth wishing for or spending money on. Flatter your bodies, whatever the size.

The whole argument about it being gay men or women that are the problem always annoys me. Their sexuality or gender doesn't matter; companies promote these body types because they want women (and, increasingly, men) to try to achieve a look that's only possible for a small percentage of the population. Because they'll keep buying shiat to try to look that way anyway.

Except what you 'see' is an endless line of fat women either in pictures or in the form of those you argue against:) Once you're exposed as mentally ill you forfeit the right to tell people what they should post. Get lost stupid.

I bet you if you showed that skinny minnie mouse to some kid from a remote amazonian tribe, he'd never guess it was supposed to be a mouse in a 1,000 years.

The sad truth is that the ideal model woman is only going to get thinner and thinner as the general population keeps getting fatter. Even if you took away all influences from fashion and media, you'd still have women striving for thinness. The poorest and least educated Americans are generally the fattest, therefore women of means will try to distance themselves from being associated with that.

Besides, the threat of anorexia is probably small beans compared to the obesity epidemic.

DrewCurtisJr: Wartime Consiglieri: When you're trying to defend something as indefensible as the skeletor look, you don't have much choice but to keep switching the subject to the other end of the spectrum.

Skeletor look? You might want to use google.

You are comparing a stylized cartoon mouse, with real people.

Just ignore her. She's completely farking insane and carries some sort of weird fatty-rage strawman into each of these threads. According to her, if you're not vociferously worshiping 200+ pound fatties, you're totally gay and only desire 82 pound walking corpses.

You can't argue with logic like that, you can only mock it.

flyinghouse99: If people weren't so fat this would be a non issue. You people also need to let up on gay men for setting unrealistic expectations for women's bodies, because heterosexual men set some unrealistic expectations for women's bodies too.

Studies show that the only unrealistic expectation straight men have for women's bodies is that their spunk will be on them.

If you really look at it, it looks like a standard supermodel's body with a mouse head. There's nothing else mouse-ish about that person in the image. No tail. Tiny human hands. Tiny human feet. Long human legs. Long human arms. Long human neck...

Ugh. The more I look, the more creeped out I get. If this is what fashion designers think is "appealing", then I understand why their dresses are all so ugly, and their models are all so sickly.

There is nothing wrong with being thin, but being as thin as a runway model is unhealthy and unreasonable. And it definitely takes some unhealthy measures to get there. Do a google search for what these chicks have to do. I stopped reading at the part where they swallow cotton balls to fill their stomachs.

WTF people. You don't waste a magic wish on something you can get the normal way. Magic wishes are for fairies and flying by flapping your arms.

"When we got to the moment when all Disney characters walk on the runway, there was a discussion," Freedman recalled. "The standard Minnie Mouse will not look so good in a Lanvin dress. There was a real moment of silence, then someone suggested that we should all shoot ourselves in the face, at which time we distributed the firearms..."

If they have access to Disney characters they should have just gone with Miss Piggy in the first place. She is a bit of a fashionista already. And she makes clothes look good, for a porker.
