(Think Progress)   For their upcoming cross-promotion with Disney, Barneys is turning Minnie Mouse into a 5'11", rail-thin model. Apparently some people have a problem with this   (thinkprogress.org) divider line 86

That's insane . . . and ugly. You'd never see Miss Piggy allowing them to do that to her. Maybe Minnie Mouse needs some Judo lessons.

rail-thin... aaaaand ugly.

Wouldn't be a horrible idea except the image is terrible and the slimming is drastic and unhealthy.

If they have access to Disney characters they should have just gone with Miss Piggy in the first place. She is a bit of a fashionista already. And she makes clothes look good, for a porker.

Eh, how bad could it be... (click) Gah!!! That's praying mantis thin.

For openers, it's a f*cking cartoon. It's also a one off seasonal ad promotion that no one will remember. Who cares?

Well, yeah she' be rail thin. They stretched her to about double her normal height. You ever stretch a Fruit Roll-Up to twice its length? It gets thinner in the middle.

they should never show super rich people to kids either... it gives them unrealistic financial goals.

FTA: ""When we got to the moment when all Disney characters walk on the runway, there was a discussion," Freedman recalled. "The standard Minnie Mouse will not look so good in a Lanvin dress. There was a real moment of silence, because these characters don't change. I said, 'If we're going to make this work, we have to have a 5-foot-11 Minnie,' and they agreed. When you see Goofy, Minnie and Mickey, they are runway models."

Models used to be the Betty Paige, curvy voluptuos type. People paid more attention to the figures than the clothes. So we have walking coat hangers. I don't get 'high fashion' anyway. The clothing is usually horribly ugly, not functional, and uncomfortable, and not flattering to a not-walking-coat-rack.

Does anyone really thing the average (not underwear or swimsuit) model is attractive? They should be setting off all sorts of unhealthy evolutionary alarm bells due starvation/sickness/etc.

It always comes down to blaming men somehow doesn't it. Guess what, there are PLENTY of women in charge in the fashion and magazine industries. Women are also the primary consumers.

Pretty much this.

People actually think there is some evil conspiracy going on; but there isn't. Media reflects what people want to see, not the other way around.

Leaving aside the question of why the two of you are attacking gay men and women, there are also PLENTY of heterosexual men in charge of the fashion and magazine industries. For example, the CEO of Barneys, Mark Lee. Isn't it more reasonable to attack these people for being assholes, then to say it's because they're gay or female?

Attack? Why do you think I mentioned women? Whenever this issue comes up some people seem to want to use gay men as the scapegoat, placing the blame on men like this is some form of oppression.

I was pointing out that gay men certainly don't have a monopoly on deciding what kind of images are used in industries. Gay men also aren't buying the clothes and magazines.

fark this store. Seriously. And I think the super thin models can be pretty. What makes me angry about it is that they bastardized an existing character to say "this is better than the way she originally was." If they wanted a rail thin cartoon character, those exist. To dump the (only mildly plump) original design in favor of this sends an absolutely disgusting message.

No one is suggesting an evil conspiracy. This is simply a case of people who aren't attracted to females using anorexic women as walking coat-hangers because that makes more sense to them than having a curvy chick drawing attention away from the wacky clothes.

This is stupid in so many ways. If you've sacrificed the time and expense to gain the rights to use Disney characters, you don't pointlessly fark up the characters until they're unrecognizable. The stockholders should build a pyre out of these idiots' expense reports and publicly burn them alive on it.

On the other side of the debate, you don't piss and moan about how altering Minnie Mouse will have negative effects on the self esteem of young girls. If there's any girl who defines the perfect body shape as looking just like Minnie Mouse, she's already beyond help.

Being thin is neither unreasonable nor unhealthy, but it does require putting down the cheeseburgers once in a while, and a lot of folks are uncomfortable with this.

There is nothing wrong with being thin, but being as thin as a runway model is unhealthy and unreasonable. And it definitely takes some unhealthy measures to get there. Do a google search for what these chicks have to do. I stopped reading at the part where they swallow cotton balls to fill their stomachs.

I'm ok with this. Better they learn at a young age how to safely beef it in the shower and heel it down the drain. Those shower floors can get a bit slippery, what with all the bile and regurgitated carrot sticks.

If you really look at it, it looks like a standard supermodel's body with a mouse head. There's nothing else mouse-ish about that person in the image. No tail. Tiny human hands. Tiny human feet. Long human legs. Long human arms. Long human neck...

Ugh. The more I look, the more creeped out I get. If this is what fashion designers think is "appealing", then I understand why their dresses are all so ugly, and their models are all so sickly.

If the standard doesn't look good, the problem is with the fashion house, not the body type.
True fashion is timeless and any body type can be stylish.

Minnie Mouse is feminine and has the suggestion of curves -- which is alright because even though she has a boyfriend, she's kind of prepubescent. The Lanvin sketch has no curves, no tits, no hips, no ass, no calves, no thighs, no rounded shoulders, no nothing. Minnie Mouse is happy and approachable. The Lanvin sketch is standoffish and distant and unhappy. Look at the facials. Much better to want to be Minnie, than the sketch.

So.... at what point will the rich browbeat the poors for being too thin while they themselves are deliciously plump, like every society before this one?
