Please do't feed the trolls or respond to the haters. We won't change the mind of anyone here just to shiat up the thread and it saps all the positive energy to have people bickering. I would personally love it if every threadshiatter post was not met with derision, but simple silence.

I think the reason some people don't get this is because they don't get the concept of expending time, energy and money on an enterprise that benefits only someone else and not themselves.

Also they don't read everything, and make assumptions to fill in the gaps created by the things they missed.

I love Fark, and the hodgepodge of idiots, geniuses, dreamers, poets, drunks and other assorted morans that make this feel like, well, a community.

This is the most epic thing I have ever seen here. Almost have a tear in my eye and hope that the 'Bird gets auctioned far above value.

And Biden? Yeah, you. You're a magnificent bastard.

Posted this in the original thread, but I don't know if anybody is reading that anymore, so...
----------------------------------
Dear Mr. RichieLaw:
I think a link to this thread on the donation site, down there with the links to the charities, would be appropriate. Something like "The discussion thread that started it all". That would give FARK more exposure, and maybe more hits, and maybe more TF subscriptions for Drew's beer fund. Also, the links to the charities should have captions so the viewer doesn't have to look at the URL to see where they go.

You and Coeyagi and Cyclometh and Hack Patooey are the quintessence of awesome and should get TF for life. You guys should be known collectively as "The Prophets of Fark", or "Seal Team Fark" or "Fark Jedi" or "Masters of the Farkiverse" or some such.

I'm going to have to get a Twitter account now, just so I can twitter bomb Portia De Rossi (gay), Christina Applegate (breast cancer), Sanjay Gupta (doctors) and Tammy Duckworth (wounded warriors)...

Well, in case anyone was wondering, the power of Fark is real and is posed to do something pretty fantastic over the coming days. In true internet fashion, what started as satire and then a joke submission is now turning into a real movement with bona fide media attention. I want to take a second to thank Hack Patooey for submitting this idea and helping with the Facebook page. cyclometh for his awesome-sauce voice over work and coyagie for creating the video that now sits on the indiegogo site.

Other important links include:

FB Page:
Twitter: @givejoethebird and @joebidenstransa (managed by Farkers that I could not find in the thread so please let me know so I can give credit where credit is due!)

In the past 24 hours we have raised almost $5,000. That is 20% of our goal! I am shocked and amazed by the support this thing has generated and am incredibly appreciative. For those that have donated because of a Biden crush (also a mixed drink of Natty-Lite, Ice Tea and Vermouth), because you're a Farker or for the LULZ, thank you. We literally couldn't do this without you.

Now, for those that haven't read through the mammoth thread from yesterday, here are some things you should know.

1. Yes, we are buying Joe Biden a Trans Am.
2. Yes, we understand he is the Vice President of the United States. Please read the indiegogo site or watch the youtube video.
3. Yes, we know how much the Vice President makes a year and understand most of his expenses as the VP are paid for. Please read the indiegogo site or watch the youtube video.
4. Yes, we know what Biden has contributed over the past to charity. We don't care. The man has publicly and fantastically served the public of his state and country for well over 30 years.
5. The goal of the project is to "give" VP Biden the Trans Am. And by "give" I have Uncle Joe endorse the idea behind the movement and then auction the Trans Am off, with all proceeds going to 4 charities: Wounded Warrior Foundation, the Biden Breast Health Initiative, Doctors Without Borders and GLAAD. This donation will be made in the name of Joe Biden AND the Internet.
6. We also plan to give Vice President Biden a replica "toy" Trans Am with a signed letter/card containing the names/avatars of all those who donated to the cause.

Now that we're done with the preliminaries, what are we going to do next?

SUNDAY SUNDAY SUNDAY

In continuing with our Big Push For Biden's Biatchin Trans Am, I would like to coordinate some "Charity Twitter Bombs."

Like the Army Air Core over Germany, Drew in a sorority house and Joe Biden at the VP debate, we will use the power of Fark to inundate specific twitter feeds with tweets about #givejoethebird. This will happen in 1 hour increments. We will designate our targets based upon their media reach. For the first day we should concentrate on actual members of the media, as well as sympathetic Democrat celebrities. All tweets should attempt to be funny. They won't all be...this is the internet...but refrain from swears, attacks on the target and only make fun of the Romney Campaign while referencing #givejoethebird.

Again, the purpose of this is to make certain personalities aware of our project so please do not be rude. I am limiting the Bombs to one hour so as not to otherwise inconvenience people.

My list of potential targets:

Arianna Huffington
Rachel Maddow
Chris Matthews
George Clooney
Tom Hanks
John Stewart
Colbert
George Takei
Betty White
And Hannity for the lulz.

Now, if the list is agreed upon we will set up times of engagement. I am also open to other suggestions.

On Monday we will do the same thing while targeting smaller media personalities and local newspapers. This will hopefully coincide nicely with our press release. If you have suggestions for local media (think local but also larger markets, Chicago, LA, New York, Philadelphia, etc.) please email me at joebidenstransam at the gmail dot come.

Cheers! Let's break $6,000 today.

Try to avoid responding to trolls, haters and threadshiatters. They'll either figure out what's going on and change their mind or they're just here to be a dickbag. In the former case, they'll come around without being snarked at, and in the latter case, nothing we say could possibly make a difference, because they're only here to take a dump on people doing a good thing.

Let the assholes be assholes and ignore them. It enrages them all the more when they get no response to their asshattery.

A: Not really. First, he's the Vice President and it wouldn't be cool for him to accept it, although we believe he legally could.

Q: OK... so what ARE you going to do with the Trans Am?
A: Ideally, we're going to buy the car, get it to Washington, D.C. and hopefully get Joe Biden to do a photo op with it- and maybe even sign it! Whether or not that works out, we'll be auctioning the Trans Am and the proceeds will be donated to four charities.

Here's what I've got for a FAQ so far:

---------------------
Give Joe The Bird Campaign FAQ

Q: Are you guys serious?
A: Well, we're serious about this, but not much else.

Q: How did this start?
A: A Farker (http://fark.com) by the handle "Hack Patooey" suggested that the Internet should buy Joe Biden a Trans Am. It blew up from there and in less than 6 hours from his suggestion we had raised over a thousand dollars.

Q: So this was just a random thing... give a Trans Am to the Vice President?
A: The original impetus of this whole thing was an article in The Onion, a satirical publication, describing Joe Biden washing a Trans Am in the driveway of the White House. This has become one of the more amusing political memes- the plain talking Joe Biden as everyman, the guy who would pound a tallboy of Icehouse and spend an afternoon detailing his Trans Am.

Q: Are you really going to give Joe Biden a Trans Am?
A: Not really. First, he's the Vice President and it wouldn't be cool for him to accept it, although we believe he legally could.

Q: OK... so what ARE you going to do with the Trans Am?
A: Ideally, we're going to buy the car, get it to Washington, D.C. and hopefully get Joe Biden to do a photo op with it- and maybe even sign it! Whether or not that works out, we'll be auctioning the Trans Am and the proceeds will be donated to four charities.

Q: Which charities will be getting the money?
A: Doctors Without Borders, GLAAD, The Wounded Warrior Project and The Biden Breast Health Initiative. Each will receive 25% of the funds at the end of the project.

Q: Why not donate the money directly to charity?
A: Because this way we get to have some fun and hopefully use the popularity of the Vice President, the silliness of making a meme become a reality, and the nature of the Internet to make it possible to get much more for these great causes.

And because- we're buying a biatchin' Trans Am for the Vice President!

Q: What happens if you don't raise the target of $25,000?
A: If we're close enough we'll probably try to get the Trans Am and roll with it anyway.

If we don't make enough to get the Trans Am and cover costs to get it to DC, the funds will be distributed directly to the four charities in equal amounts. Except enough to buy a die-cast Trans Am and send it to the Vice President. :)

Q: What happens if you raise MORE than the target of $25,000?
A: Anything not spent on donor perks, the Trans Am and the cost to get it to DC will be divided equally among the four charities.

Q: Is anyone on this team getting a share of this money?
A: Not one thin dime. Everything that isn't going to expenses like indiegogo's fee, donor perk costs, taxes and so forth will go to the charities. Nobody here will be taking any money you donate.

Q: How can we be sure this isn't a scam?
A: Well, we've got a lot of credibility on Fark, the admins there know who we are, etc. But in the end we can't really give you ironclad assurance; this is not a 501(c) or anything like that.

If you don't feel comfortable contributing to this campaign, please consider a direct contribution to one of our four charities. That really is the ultimate goal here.

Q: Is my donation tax-deductible?
A: No. If you want to make a tax-deductible donation, you can directly donate to the causes in question.

Q: This is stupid, Joe Biden can afford his own Trans Am!
A: Not really the point- we're trying to make a silly meme a reality and benefit some great charitable causes.

Q: Why should I support this? I hate Joe Biden!
A: If you don't want to support our campaign, please consider a direct donation to one or more of the charities we're supporting.

Q: Who's behind this?
A: This started with several Farkers. The original suggestion was by "Hack Patooey", the IndieGoGo campaign created by "RichieLaw", the video created by "coeyagi" and the voiceover for the video and other flacking by "Cyclometh". Many others have helped out also!

Just a reminder- trolls, haters and threadshiatters WILL show up here. Please don't respond to them, as the arguments detract from what we're doing and accomplish nothing useful. Better to let them shout and stamp their feet until they're tired without giving them the satisfaction of a response.

RichieLaw: Kumana Wanalaia: Hey what are the chances of giving people the option to buy a t-shirt with a print of the onion 'shop of Biden washing a TransAm?

They have those instant-order shirt printers now.... I googled "instant shirt print" and got a ton of hits.

One site quotes $6 per shirt. Apparently there is a lot of variety in the style of shirt (mens, women's, hooded sweatshirt, etc) and colors.

Could this be set up so people can order a shirt for say, $20 on indiegogo with a click or two, so it's not a case of "donate $20 and we'll link you to a shirt printer so you can make your own Biden shirt with your own pic"

I did a mockup yesterday and no one seemed interested in going through with it. I think the t-shirt idea is perfect.

I would rec selling it at the 30$ level though to maximize donations and cover the cost of the shirts.

Oh and thank you for your work.

The point of this is not to increase Biden's popularity. It is to make a meme become reality while benefiting a bunch of people who need it. Simple as that.

Please guys, if you have suggestions, make them. I've never done this before. It would be much better for us to make better shirts than turn out something crappy ... this IS for charity...

The difference between the photo shirt and a nice screen printed shirt (needing vector art) is that the photo shirt is going to physically suck. Like, it won't be a shirt you'll want to wear out, and it'll get eaten in the wash quickly. The resolution is also assy.

Consider taking something like

drop me an email at "chris kultzow (gmail)" so that I have your email address and maybe I can help with vectorizing something - there's two months to go, we're not exactly in a rush. I think there's a really nice 2-tone on a background color shirt design to be had somewhere around here, I'd hate to commit to crap just because we're in a hurry.

Maybe you even have this $25 "lousy shirt" and a $50 "luxurious shirt", eh?

Don't know why didn't I think of it myself:

Carry On My Wayward Son: Kansas

Thanks, Beenjammin!

Heh, no problem! That song is near and dear to my heart, I actually have a CSB about it from my time in Afghanistan.

The first time I was there, before I got messed up, I was in the cadillac shiatter on base admiring the handy-work on the wall of my stall while I was listening to my iPod. That was the song I was listening to at that moment, so I added the first line of the song to all the rest of the graffiti and then left. After about a week later I found myself in the same stall, and lo and behold, the entire song had been written out by what had to be eight different handwritings, each had added a line from the song until it was finished. I just chuckled my way all the way back to my hut.

Good times, good times.

Every now and then, goodness shines through... even in a shiatter in Afghanistan.

Thank you for your service

Posted on the pending thread for tomorrow, reposting here. Sent this to a couple of drive-time talkshows in the Seattle area:

Hi Ron and Don (and Rachael!),

I hope you're having a good day so far!

This is the same email I sent to the Ross and Burbank show, but I thought you might enjoy it also. Or maybe it'll Ring Rachael's bell. :)

I wanted to let you know about thing some friends of mine and I are up to: Holding a fundraising drive to buy Vice-President Joe Biden a Trans Am! in reality it's for charity, but we're utterly serious about this.

If you read The Onion, you're probably familiar with the article from a couple of years ago satirizing VP Biden as washing a vintage Trans Am on the White House lawn (http://www.theonion.com/articles/shirtless-biden-washes-trans-am-in-w hite-house-dri,2718/). Since it was published, it's become one of the more prominent political memes on the Internet- the idea of Joe Biden as an Icehouse-chugging everyman who wears jorts and washes a muscle car on the White House lawn.

So, how this got started: On Friday morning a Farker named "Hack Patooey" (yes, that's his handle. We tend to be pretty irreverent over there) posted a thread in the wake of the debates saying that it would be fun to buy Joe Biden a Trans Am.

It took off instantly, and within only a few hours we had decided to make it a charity drive with the car as the hook, set up a campaign on IndieGoGo (http://indiegogo.com/BidensTransAm), got a web site (givejoethebird.com), established what we were going to do, set fundraising targets and had raised over a thousand dollars. At the time I write this, it's over $6000.00, which is more than 25% of the way to our target of $25,000.

The goal is simple- to buy a sweet vintage Trans Am for Joe Biden, try to get a photo op with the VP and then auction it for charity. We knew from the outset that there wasn't really any chance the VP would want or accept a car, no matter the cause. However, we figure it's a fun way to make a meme real and benefit some GREAT causes.

The charities we chose are:

* Doctors Without Borders
* GLAAD
* The Wounded Warrior Project
* The Biden Breast Health Initiative

If we don't make our goal we'll divide the donations received evenly between the charities. If we do make it, the Trans Am will be auctioned and the proceeds divided evenly- and anything over and above the target goal will also be divided up evenly.

We've spent the weekend Tweeting, Facebooking and flacking this thing everywhere and we think it's got legs. We'd love to have you cover it on your show! I listen to you guys most mornings and really enjoy it, so regardless of whether you find this interesting I thank you for the great work you do!

Have a great day!

Thanks..added

Im really surprised that with all the depth and breadth of professions here, we don't have someone that can inject a story in to AP or Newswire...

It's going to go one of two directions- slow and steady for six weeks or it's going to take off overnight.

Well we have passed 20% of our goal in three days; three days which are typically the slowest on the internet. We've received mention in blogs and some decent sized online media outlets and one large one. We just need a little bit more exposure for this to take off. Now, is this going to turn out like the Tesla campaign by the Oatmeal? Probably not. But I think we'll get close to our target. If not, it has been a lot of fun and we can just send the money direct to the charities with a replica going to Uncle Joe.

Either way, we all win.

/And had lulz. Lots and lots of lulz.

So, MIXTAPE!

Thanks to help from Great Glavin's Ghost the current suggestions are now all up in this thread:

Vote/submit your favorite rock songs to go into the Trans Am mixtape/playlist

If you have a song you want on the mix tape, please post it there!

Voting may help us pick a limited number of songs but we'll compile all the suggestions into a playlist for everyone anyway.

I am not an Intellectual Property rights guy, but might it be as simple as paying ASCAP a one time fee based on number of tapes (or CD's or whatever) multiplied by the number of songs on the tapes? Bars with jukeboxes just pay ASCAP, so I've got to think there's an easier way than creating a 501c3 or contacting each and every rights holder for permission.

I love FM -- but It's kind of out of the theme of 60's-70's-80's rock and roll.

Good point...how 'bout we get some CCR on that list...maybe Fortunate Son or Bad Moon Rising?

If you're gonna throw in CCR, you should add Ramble Tamble. I know most people haven't heard of it because it never got a lot of airplay, but it's a GREAT driving song. Food for thought. I know it won't survive the cut, but there it is.

BolloxReader: RichieLaw: It is currently NOT a non-profit. Right now the funds would be distributed in my bank account. There are some tax implications in this and I will be having some discussions with people to determine the best avenue for the fund dispersal. It may be in the best interest to actually set up a non-profit for this purpose. Or attempt to have one of the charities take the funds and disperse it. We'll see what happens at day 30.

Also, having been involved in setting up non-profits before I can tell you that for something like this it would be FAR easier to contact an established non-profit and use them as a pass-through. I've worked with a couple groups that do this such as the Peace and Justice Center in Indianapolis. People send money to them and you are for bookkeeping purposes considered part of their organization. You are accountable to them for following IRS regulations and because of this the groups tend to be choosy about who they work with.

I'd help you out in that way, but I am currently driving over the road as a trucker and this is all stuff I can't currently work with. But I know that unless you expect this to be an ongoing thing (for example, setting up a public foundation to buy a car like this for the VP every term that is then auctioned off to benefit their selected charities-- that would definitely make this a non-political organization) there is no real reason to incorporate (step one), get an EIN (step two) and file for IRS non-profit recognition. You could just as easily operate (if you had to show anything for tax purposes) a sole proprietorship (in Indiana there is no filing necessary if you use your last name) and simply show that all the money going in was spent on expenses such as the car and T-shirts and the like. You'd have to file a single page report called a Schedule C with your personal income taxes. If all the money is disbursed then there should be no tax liability on your part. You simply carry zero dollars over to your person ...

This was super helpful. I am an attorney so the incorporation part would not be terribly difficult, but this does seem easier. I am planning on contacting the charities tomorrow to see if a pass through is possible. The difficulty is getting a charity to give up the money to the other three. I don't think it will be a problem but I want to play it safe. I'm totally fine with donating my time but I do not want to get hit with a gigantic tax bill at the end of the year. Or an audit.

You'd have to file a single page report called a Schedule C with your personal income taxes. If all the money is disbursed then there should be no tax liability on your part. You simply carry zero dollars over to your personal income. If you file for an EIN then the IRS will have you on file and expect more business-like conduct from you (at least in my personal experience). You can't write it all off as charity (I think that there is a 10% of revenue limit on that for businesses) but this task is perfectly suited to a sole proprietorship. All the IRS wants to know is why you have all this money coming into and out of your accounts. Setting up a separate account at the bank to hold the money until it's disbursed and keeping track of expenses (with reciepts) is all they are really looking for. If you have no net income from the business then there is nothing for them to tax. Chances are they accept your Schedule C without any problems even if you show no net income. It explains the money flow through the system. If there's a challenge to it they'll ask for specific records as a spot-check to make sure there's nothing hinky going on.

If you file for incorporation it will cost money and time and that is something you need to balance against the liability risks incurred through this activity. If this is a one-off then you have only minimal risk exposure. 45 days, buy the perks/toys/whatever, and close it down by the end of the year and it should be fine. Just keep all your records for 7 years.

Note that I am not a lawyer nor an accountant, merely someone who has had reasons and opportunities to set up various small entities over the years. I've done it the hard way and I've done it the easy way, depending on the situation. You don't use a permanent structure for something like this unless you really have to.

I wonder if we could "sell" copies of your mixtape?

Richie, since this is non-profit, can a mixtape be created and given as a perk?

It is currently NOT a non-profit.

Even if it were a non-profit, you still have to secure the permission of rights holders to distribute the music. They can choose to waive royalties, but you have to give them the option to do so. They could also say Sure, go ahead and do it, attached please find our royalty fee schedule based on the songs you want to use.

I'd suggest distributing a playlist rather than an actual recording.

oh by the way, both reps I spoke to at CustomInk got a kick out of our project (not just the shirts, the whole shebang).

If anyone has questions for CustomInk please post them here, I will call them back if need be. They have my email address, there is a contact log of what we spoke about, etc.

CustomInk is USA owned, their printers are in USA (one east coast, one west coast - well, nevada)

The shirt print area is 14"x17", at 200dpi.

the price per shirt will vary depending on where we ship them to. I got quotes for 2 kinds of T, in white and color.

We can get a $0.50 per shirt discount since this is for charity by letting CustomInk put their logo on the shirt. Front or back. the logo cannot cover our image so lets put it on the back.

If we order over 250 shirts we get access to their artists who can tweak our image for us. Also, if we order over 250 shirts, we get a pre-production sample to make sure that our shirt looks good.

I got quotes for shipping the shirts to Albany NY because apparently that's the highest (or near the highest) cost. We can call CustomInk back and find a less expensive place to ship our shirts for re-shipment that will cost a little less than NY. FYI they have a printer on the east coast and one in Nevada.

Our best bet for getting the shirts at $12/shirt or less is to use 5 colors or less and print on white Bayside cotton Ts. If we need 6-8 colors then we have to print on (?) American Apparel Ts, which cost about a dollar more per shirt.

American Apparel - 6 colors - for photos, digital printing - these shirts run skinny - quotes for XL or less
qty | White / Color
50 = 17.50 / 18.76
100 = 14.60 / 15.86
200 = 12.48 / 13.74
500 = 10.44 / 11.70

Bayside 5 colors or less - screen printed
qty | White / Color
50 = 15.12 / 16.28
100 = 12.50 / 13.66
200 = 10.60 / 11.76
500 = 8.80 / 9.95

Please note that if we mix and match whites and colors in a single order the price might not be exactly the same as the per shirt price for that quantity. This is just to get an idea.

America
Fark Yeah were all a BFD!

/Just goofing off. I guess this would be for the back of the shirt. Personally I would like the picture on the back, but I'll get one to put with my Smoking Gun T-Shirt I won years ago anyway.

My 2 cents:

While some of the text and video on GJTB do have some political connotations, I think the idea is to not get too heavy with the politics, especially the 47%/99%/1% stuff which are heavily divisive right now in the political landscape.

Again, my 2 cents, which thanks to the hyper-inflation of Fartbummer, aren't worth 30 Turkish lira!

:-)

Thanks. I thought about it awhile and you're right. It should be a lighter and funnier. I think I took too much of my political feelings into account in thinking about it. :) That's because I'm kinda pissed off.

So it's called Give Joe the Bird. Then you don't give it to him. Bottom line: What if he falls in love with it and actually wants it?

RichieLaw, the white T I used for price quoting is the cheapest shirt they sell.

It looks like CustomInk prints in the USA (I'm not sure but it looks like it).

However, they have a category of shirts called "Made in USA". I tried to get a quote for a made in USA T, and it came out the same price as the cheap T. But the product index says those shirts are more expensive. I'll call CustomInk tomorrow and try to find out for sure.

If it's possible, obviously we would prefer that the shirts are Made in USA, not just Printed in USA... right?

Vintage trans am tshirt

Aquapope: RichieLaw: Cyclometh: Here's what I've got for a FAQ so far:

---------------------
Give Joe The Bird Campaign FAQ
etc. etc. etc.

This FAQ and the Press Release should go up on www.givejoethebird.com along with a VERY PROMINENT link to the indiegogo.com page. The way it is now, the link to givejoethebird.com on indiegogo.com gets routed right back to the indiegogo.com page. Maybe a farker good with HTML/CSS could make a cool index.html for givejoethebird.com. And maybe a "Media" page using FinFangFark's list...

Or am I just stating the obvious and this was the plan all along?

That would be cool. I just put the faq up on the main page of the indiegogo site. It would not fit in an update.

from yahoo comments:

@Ronald: "Teabagging" is indeed what some homosexuals do. But they don't belong to the Tea Party. The group who wanted to buy Clinton a blow up doll gave up in dispair when they realized that they didn't know which sex to get him. A man who likes to be done that way too much is way too gay to be straight. And the fact that he married a lesbian from Wellesley should have tipped you off.

is he trying to say getting BJs from fat girls is gay? if so i'm queer as a $3 bill.

Some are trolls, some are making assumptions and once they parse what we're doing instead of leaping to conclusions will end up helping out. Those who are here to shiat up the joint won't be convinced anyway, and those that are just incorrect will come around without us berating them. So best to simply let them bluster. They'll either get bored or figure it out. :)

GreatGlavinsGhost: RichieLaw: ArcadianRefugee: RichieLaw: Kumana Wanalaia: Hey what are the chances of giving people the option to buy a t-shirt with a print of the onion 'shop of Biden washing a TransAm?

[i.imgur.com image 325x300]

While the image is a meme, it is still property The Onion, no? Wouldn't ya need permission?

Possibly. I would contact them just to be safe, but I'm pretty sure that we have a really valid fair use argument. In addition to the fact that the Onion has made no effort to curb third party usage of the photograph.

Have you found out who's been tweeting? Cyclometh is @JoeBidensTransA, but I don't know who's doing @GiveJoeTheBird.

GiveJoeTheBird was recently given to me for safekeeping. The owner wishes to stay anonymous. So I will just thank him and her for his or her service! I am currently looking for an enterprising individual to take over the twitter account. Any takers?

If you're interested please post your funniest #givejoethebird tweet and we'll decide who gets to take over. I'll end the competition tonight at 10p.m. Central.

Thing is, we already know he doesn't want it based on an interview with him where the Onion article was raised for comment. He actually has a classic Corvette that the Secret Service won't let him drive. I much prefer the charity angle and hopefully when all is said and done there is at least a photo op with the Bird.

I responded to you in the other thread:

I have thought about doing this but I wanted to make sure it is cool with everyone on the forums. Some people have some things in their profiles that they probably don't want broadcast to the world. I just got back to a computer so I am going to update the pitch to reflect that this started on Fark.

traylor: I contributed my share yesterday because I naively believed that this wasn't a thing about US politics but rather the Onion and the lulz. Seeing this thread going green on the Politics tab made me sad. I want my 5 back, dammit.

I'm sorry you feel that way. This is more about the Onion and the lulz. However, by the very nature of the project, there will be a liberal leaning. I mean, we're celebrating a Democratic Vice President. So, if you really want your $5 back I'll paypal it to you. Hit up my email and provide proof of your donation and your fark login.

I still don't see any disclaimer on the funding site that says "We are not affiliated with VP Biden or the Obama campaign".

Please please please please please

But for now I got a dinner invite to a friend's house and I gotta go grab at least one slightly exotic flavour of ice cream.

$5 for Biden's car. About $200 for Obama and the Dems. I'm all tapped out here.

CONTRIBUTE TO OBAMA'S CAMPAIGN HERE, so Biden can drive around the White House driveway Rain Man-style.

Boe: Since no one is planning to send him cash via the mail we should be ok.

downstairs: Tarkus: Isn't it illegal for public officials to accept personal gifts?

Caveat and CSB:

When I was in 3rd grade, we did the whole "write a letter to the president" thing.  Ronald Reagan was president, and I liked him because he was a folksy old dude who liked jelly beans and all that (come on, I was in 3rd grade!)

So I included a dime in the letter for him.

A week or so later I got a very official yellow envelope from the White House staff informing me that the President cannot accept cash via the mail, with my dime returned.

Heh.  Probably have an FBI file now.

/Probably not

Since no one is planning to send him cash via the mail we should be ok.

And if anyone has missed the point, this is for charity, and no one is actually giving Biden a car. Except for the small replica matchbox type car. Which isn't cash.

No, after thousands of posts all day yesterday, no one thought of that at all. We must be screwed.

Can't be.  They accept things like jerseys from championship teams, and all sorts of stuff from other heads of state.  There was some interview with Bush II or Clinton or some former president who showed his closet full of all sorts of gifts he got as president.  And I believe he mentioned he really didn't need the crap and would probably be giving it away to charity or whatever.  But he was allowed to have it.

I have zero legal knowledge about it, but I assume they:

1. Can't accept straight cash, homey.

2. Can't sell or use said gifts for political gain to some extent.

So the charity aspect aside here, I'm pretty sure Biden *could* accept the Trans Am and keep it on his driveway.  (Which is not the case here anyway.)

The idea isn't to actually give Joe the Trans-Am but to buy it and then auction it.
