Well, in case anyone was wondering, the power of Fark is real and is posed to do something pretty fantastic over the coming days. In true internet fashion, what started as satire and then a joke submission is now turning into a real movement with bona fide media attention. I want to take a second to thank Hack Patooey for submitting this idea and helping with the Facebook page. cyclometh for his awesome-sauce voice over work and coyagie for creating the video that now sits on the indiegogo site.

Other important links include:

FB Page:
Twitter: @givejoethebird and @joebidenstransa (managed by Farkers that I could not find in the thread so please let me know so I can give credit where credit is due!)

In the past 24 hours we have raised almost $5,000. That is 20% of our goal! I am shocked and amazed by the support this thing has generated and am incredibly appreciative. For those that have donated because of a Biden crush (also a mixed drink of Natty-Lite, Ice Tea and Vermouth), because you're a Farker or for the LULZ, thank you. We literally couldn't do this without you.

Now, for those that haven't read through the mammoth thread from yesterday, here are some things you should know.

1. Yes, we are buying Joe Biden a Trans Am.
2. Yes, we understand he is the Vice President of the United States. Please read the indiegogo site or watch the youtube video.
3. Yes, we know how much the Vice President makes a year and understand most of his expenses as the VP are paid for. Please read the indiegogo site or watch the youtube video.
4. Yes, we know what Biden has contributed over the past to charity. We don't care. The man has publicly and fantastically served the public of his state and country for well over 30 years.
5. The goal of the project is to "give" VP Biden the Trans Am. And by "give" I have Uncle Joe endorse the idea behind the movement and then auction the Trans Am off, with all proceeds going to 4 charities: Wounded Warrior Foundation, the Biden Breast Health Initiative, Doctors Without Borders and GLAAD. This donation will be made in the name of Joe Biden AND the Internet.
6. We also plan to give Vice President Biden a replica "toy" Trans Am with a signed letter/card containing the names/avatars of all those who donated to the cause.

Now that we're done with the preliminaries, what are we going to do next?

SUNDAY SUNDAY SUNDAY

In continuing with our Big Push For Biden's Biatchin Trans Am, I would like to coordinate some "Charity Twitter Bombs."

Like the Army Air Core over Germany, Drew in a sorority house and Joe Biden at the VP debate, we will use the power of Fark to inundate specific twitter feeds with tweets about #givejoethebird. This will happen in 1 hour increments. We will designate our targets based upon their media reach. For the first day we should concentrate on actual members of the media, as well as sympathetic Democrat celebrities. All tweets should attempt to be funny. They won't all be...this is the internet...but refrain from swears, attacks on the target and only make fun of the Romney Campaign while referencing #givejoethebird.

Again, the purpose of this is to make certain personalities aware of our project so please do not be rude. I am limiting the Bombs to one hour so as not to otherwise inconvenience people.

My list of potential targets:

Arianna Huffington
Rachel Maddow
Chris Matthews
George Clooney
Tom Hanks
John Stewart
Colbert
George Takei
Betty White
And Hannity for the lulz.

Now, if the list is agreed upon we will set up times of engagement. I am also open to other suggestions.

On Monday we will do the same thing while targeting smaller media personalities and local newspapers. This will hopefully coincide nicely with our press release. If you have suggestions for local media (think local but also larger markets, Chicago, LA, New York, Philadelphia, etc.) please email me at joebidenstransam at the gmail dot come.

Cheers! Let's break $6,000 today.

Also, the indiegogo site has seen almost 40,000 views and over 20,000 visitors. In 24 hours. Keep it up!

The idea isn't to actually give Joe the Trans-Am but to buy it and then auction it.

No, it isn't. Someone posted a link yesterday and provided info (way too lazy to search) but the President and VP can accept gifts.

Wowcakes!

2012-10-13 01:53:38 PM

Tarkus: Isn't it illegal for public officials to accept personal gifts?

Can't be.  They accept things like jerseys from championship teams, and all sorts of stuff from other heads of state.  There was some interview with Bush II or Clinton or some former president who showed his closet full of all sorts of gifts he got as president.  And I believe he mentioned he really didn't need the crap and would probably be giving it away to charity or whatever.  But he was allowed to have it.

I have zero legal knowledge about it, but I assume they:

1. Can't accept straight cash, homey.

2. Can't sell or use said gifts for political gain to some extent.

So the charity aspect aside here, I'm pretty sure Biden *could* accept the Trans Am and keep it on his driveway.  (Which is not the case here anyway.)

No, after thousands of posts all day yesterday, no one thought of that at all. We must be screwed.

2012-10-13 01:56:44 PM
From the previous thread:

"Although the President, like all other federal officers and employees, is prohibited from receiving
personal gifts from foreign governments and foreign officials without the consent of Congress
(U.S. Const., art. I, §9, cl. 8), the President is generally free to accept unsolicited personal gifts
from the American public. Most of the restrictions on federal officials accepting gifts from
"prohibited sources" (those doing business with, seeking action from, or regulated by one's
agency) are not applicable to the President of the United States (5 C.F.R. §2635.204(j)), although
the President may not solicit gifts from such sources. The President, in a similar manner as other
federal officials, may also receive unrestricted gifts from relatives and gifts that are given on the
basis of personal friendship. When personal gifts accepted by the President or his immediate
family exceed a certain amount, those gifts are required to be publicly disclosed in financial
disclosure reports filed annually by the President. 5 U.S.C. app., §§101(f)(1), 102(a)(2). The
President remains subject to the bribery and illegal gratuities law which prohibits the receipt of a
gift or of anything of value when that receipt, or the agreement to receive such thing of value, is
connected in some way to the performance (or nonperformance) of an official act."

Tarkus: Isn't it illegal for public officials to accept personal gifts?

Caveat and CSB:

When I was in 3rd grade, we did the whole "write a letter to the president" thing.  Ronald Reagan was president, and I liked him because he was a folksy old dude who liked jelly beans and all that (come on, I was in 3rd grade!)

So I included a dime in the letter for him.

A week or so later I got a very official yellow envelope from the White House staff informing me that the President cannot accept cash via the mail, with my dime returned.

Heh.  Probably have an FBI file now.

Since no one is planning to send him cash via the mail we should be ok.

And if anyone has missed the point, this is for charity, and no one is actually giving Biden a car. Except for the small replica matchbox type car. Which isn't cash.

Dear Mr. RichieLaw:
I think a link to this thread on the donation site, down there with the links to the charities, would be appropriate. Something like "The discussion thread that started it all". That would give FARK more exposure, and maybe more hits, and maybe more TF subscriptions for Drew's beer fund. Also, the links to the charities should have captions so the viewer doesn't have to look at the URL to see where they go.

You and Coeyagi and Cyclometh and Hack Patooey are the quintessence of awesome and should get TF for life. You guys should be known collectively as "The Prophets of Fark", or "Seal Team Fark" or "Fark Jedi" or "Masters of the Farkiverse" or some such.

Well, here's how the liberal media is describing the debate:

Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr.'s smirking, aggressive performance during the vice-presidential debate on Thursday could be seen as a message for his boss: Here's how you do it...But Mr. Biden repeatedly mocked and interrupted Mr. Ryan, leading Republicans to use words like "unhinged," "buffoon" and "disrespectful" in the hours after the fast-paced, 90-minute exchange ended.

I have thought about doing this but I wanted to make sure it is cool with everyone on the forums. Some people have some things in their profiles that they probably don't want broadcast to the world. I just got back to a computer so I am going to update the pitch to reflect that this started on Fark.

I think the reason some people don't get this is because they don't get the concept of expending time, energy and money on an enterprise that benefits only someone else and not themselves.

Also they don't read everything, and make assumptions to fill in the gaps created by the things they missed.

Considering they were using those words before the debate, I don't see why we should care.

Forget it. I was looking for this thread but I could only find it on the Politics tab. I was angry but later I found it also on the Main Page so it's fine now. And btw you said this is also a celebration of the VP, but if I think about it and see the reactions I am not sure this stunt will make people love him more or hate him more. Oh and thank you for your work.

The point of this is not to increase Biden's popularity. It is to make a meme become reality while benefiting a bunch of people who need it. Simple as that.

/If Biden becomes more popular as a result, so be it.

You haven't been outside lately? Republicans hate Biden even more after he shaved Ryan's liver on live television. Anything you do to bring more attention to Biden means the Republicans believe you are Satan's offspring. You should be uncomfortable about the safety of yourself and your family, seriously.

I agree with Cyclometh. Or perhaps some talented Farker could create a "DebbieDownerwhawhawha.jpeg" or a "Bluebirdof Happinesstakingapoo.jpeg" if a response is truely needed. By now, if you haven't gotten the true message of charity giving, lulz, etc., you will not ever get it.

Just my opinion. :)

I love Fark, and the hodgepodge of idiots, geniuses, dreamers, poets, drunks and other assorted morans that make this feel like, well, a community.

This is the most epic thing I have ever seen here. Almost have a tear in my eye and hope that the 'Bird gets auctioned far above value.

And Biden? Yeah, you. You're a magnificent bastard.

The charity auction angle is nice, but there is nothing illegal about giving Joe a car just for the fun of it.

Could have mentioned the auction more prominently. I think a lot more people would donate.

We'll do Central Time Zone. That way both coasts can contribute all day. Good question, did not think of that. It also starts in the am and ends in the pm.

Also, we can add more people but I think a coordinated campaign is best with a limited number of people each day. We can add more people on Tuesday. We have 46 more days for funding. We have time. :)

Hey what are the chances of giving people the option to buy a t-shirt with a print of the onion 'shop of Biden washing a TransAm?

They have those instant-order shirt printers now.... I googled "instant shirt print" and got a ton of hits.

One site quotes $6 per shirt. Apparently there is a lot of variety in the style of shirt (mens, women's, hooded sweatshirt, etc) and colors.

Could this be set up so people can order a shirt for say, $20 on indiegogo with a click or two, so it's not a case of "donate $20 and we'll link you to a shirt printer so you can make your own Biden shirt with your own pic"

Could this be set up so people can order a shirt for say, $20 on indiegogo with a click or two, so it's not a case of "donate $20 and we'll link you to a shirt printer so you can make your own Biden shirt with your own pic"

I did a mockup yesterday and no one seemed interested in going through with it. I think the t-shirt idea is perfect.

I would rec selling it at the 30$ level though to maximize donations and cover the cost of the shirts.

ArcadianRefugee: RichieLaw: Kumana Wanalaia: Hey what are the chances of giving people the option to buy a t-shirt with a print of the onion 'shop of Biden washing a TransAm?

While the image is a meme, it is still property The Onion, no? Wouldn't ya need permission?

Possibly. I would contact them just to be safe, but I'm pretty sure that we have a really valid fair use argument. In addition to the fact that the Onion has made no effort to curb third party usage of the photograph.

BarkingUnicorn: The charity auction angle is nice, but there is nothing illegal about giving Joe a car just for the fun of it.

Could have mentioned the auction more prominently. I think a lot more people would donate.

Thing is, we already know he doesn't want it based on an interview with him where the Onion article was raised for comment. He actually has a classic Corvette that the Secret Service won't let him drive. I much prefer the charity angle and hopefully when all is said and done there is at least a photo op with the Bird.

I missed this when it blew up yesterday. My fark activity was restricted to the Nationals game thread (which sucked). This is awesome. I wish I had some money to donate, but I bookmarked the indiegogo site, and if I get a job within the next 46 days, I'll be donating to a perk level. If not, well I'll be able to chip in a single buck.

You should definitely add Kathy Griffin to your tweets list... she's got a huge gay fan-base, is an Obama supporter and has a tv show...

Also, for the t-shirts, it would be extra, ginormously awesome if you could get Joe to pose washing the car on the WH lawn to put on the t-shirts...

RichieLaw: Also, do we have consensus on offering a shirt as an award at $30?

I like the idea. I think that there is more potential for lulz than just a white T with the pic on the front and a couple words on the back. Maybe a p-shop contest to cover the front, and a caption contest for the back? Or maybe just a couple of days to get a better design?

Also may I suggest that in addition to the T, that the hooded sweatshirt also be an option. Choices choices choices.

Another alternative back could mention

Fark.com
Give Joe the Bird
the twitter accounts
the names of the charities that benefitted
and other phrases for extra lulz.

"It's a BFD!" is fine by me, I'm just offering suggestions.

http://www.uberprints.com/catalog/ (pops)

http://www.customink.com/categories/ (pops)
http://www.customink.com/custom/custom-shirts.htm (pops - same place)

two places with more than just Ts.

Google search for "Instant print shirts free shipping"

Some places don't have a minimum order; I would expect that we can ignore that and look for other, better options (like a lower price per shirt, or another consideration) and just order the minimum ahead of time; we can pre-order 6 or 10 shirts here on fark, and then make more available in indiegogo.

Yes? does this seem reasonable?

Anyway from the couple seconds of searching I did two hours ago it looks like there are a lot of options. There was one site that had about 30 types of shirt style, I can't find it.

Awesome. You're officially in charge of t-shirt and sweatshirt design. :) If you can't take this on, I'll do it, no worries.

I think it does seem reasonable and if we over the shirts for 30 and the sweatshirts for 50-60 depending on cost, we can still make some good gains.

There's no PayPal because they're assholes when it comes to a large influx of money and will freeze an account for days/weeks. Also, you don't need a Facebook to donate. Not sure how I can help you with the home address thing, but if you're using your credit card to donate you would have to put it in anyways.

Here's what I've got for a FAQ so far:

---------------------
Give Joe The Bird Campaign FAQ

Q: Are you guys serious?
A: Well, we're serious about this, but not much else.

Q: How did this start?
A: A Farker (http://fark.com) by the handle "Hack Patooey" suggested that the Internet should buy Joe Biden a Trans Am. It blew up from there and in less than 6 hours from his suggestion we had raised over a thousand dollars.

Q: So this was just a random thing... give a Trans Am to the Vice President?
A: The original impetus of this whole thing was an article in The Onion, a satirical publication, describing Joe Biden washing a Trans Am in the driveway of the White House. This has become one of the more amusing political memes- the plain talking Joe Biden as everyman, the guy who would pound a tallboy of Icehouse and spend an afternoon detailing his Trans Am.

Q: Are you really going to give Joe Biden a Trans Am?
A: Not really. First, he's the Vice President and it wouldn't be cool for him to accept it, although we believe he legally could.

Q: OK... so what ARE you going to do with the Trans Am?
A: Ideally, we're going to buy the car, get it to Washington, D.C. and hopefully get Joe Biden to do a photo op with it- and maybe even sign it! Whether or not that works out, we'll be auctioning the Trans Am and the proceeds will be donated to four charities.

Q: Which charities will be getting the money?
A: Doctors Without Borders, GLAAD, The Wounded Warrior Project and The Biden Breast Health Initiative. Each will receive 25% of the funds at the end of the project.

Q: Why not donate the money directly to charity?
A: Because this way we get to have some fun and hopefully use the popularity of the Vice President, the silliness of making a meme become a reality, and the nature of the Internet to make it possible to get much more for these great causes.

And because- we're buying a biatchin' Trans Am for the Vice President!

Q: What happens if you don't raise the target of $25,000?
A: If we're close enough we'll probably try to get the Trans Am and roll with it anyway.

If we don't make enough to get the Trans Am and cover costs to get it to DC, the funds will be distributed directly to the four charities in equal amounts. Except enough to buy a die-cast Trans Am and send it to the Vice President. :)

Q: What happens if you raise MORE than the target of $25,000?
A: Anything not spent on donor perks, the Trans Am and the cost to get it to DC will be divided equally among the four charities.

Q: Is anyone on this team getting a share of this money?
A: Not one thin dime. Everything that isn't going to expenses like indiegogo's fee, donor perk costs, taxes and so forth will go to the charities. Nobody here will be taking any money you donate.

Q: How can we be sure this isn't a scam?
A: Well, we've got a lot of credibility on Fark, the admins there know who we are, etc. But in the end we can't really give you ironclad assurance; this is not a 501(c) or anything like that.

If you don't feel comfortable contributing to this campaign, please consider a direct contribution to one of our four charities. That really is the ultimate goal here.

Q: Is my donation tax-deductible?
A: No. If you want to make a tax-deductible donation, you can directly donate to the causes in question.

Q: This is stupid, Joe Biden can afford his own Trans Am!
A: Not really the point- we're trying to make a silly meme a reality and benefit some great charitable causes.

Q: Why should I support this? I hate Joe Biden!
A: If you don't want to support our campaign, please consider a direct donation to one or more of the charities we're supporting.

Q: Who's behind this?
A: This started with several Farkers. The original suggestion was by "Hack Patooey", the IndieGoGo campaign created by "RichieLaw", the video created by "coeyagi" and the voiceover for the video and other flacking by "Cyclometh". Many others have helped out also!

Cyclometh: Just a reminder- trolls, haters and threadshiatters WILL show up here. Please don't respond to them, as the arguments detract from what we're doing and accomplish nothing useful. Better to let them shout and stamp their feet until they're tired without giving them the satisfaction of a response.

Thanks!

I agree that not responding is appropriate, but these threads have been great for ensuring my farkie/ignore list is current, so there's that. Plus I gave some money too.

RichieLaw: Awesome. You're officially in charge of t-shirt and sweatshirt design. :) If you can't take this on, I'll do it, no worries.

I think it does seem reasonable and if we over the shirts for 30 and the sweatshirts for 50-60 depending on cost, we can still make some good gains.

Arg, my post blew up.

Okay: I'd be happy to help tonight and tomorrow. During the week I probably won't be able to help (much). I presume that this will be completed before friday. So I'll get the ball rolling here.

What parameters should be considered in choosing a shirt-printer?

Made in USA
Free Shipping
On Demand versus block orders (we want them on demand, of course, right?)
Order minimums

Others?

Also, Fark has the headline Ts, I wonder if anyone in the FARK hierarchy has any words of wisdom on choosing an on-demand shirt printer.

I will submit a photoshop and a caption contest tonight. If there are viable options, we might even offer more than one print design. I will post the suggested language of the link submissions in this thread for comment. The "O' for the photoshop contest will be the Onion pic.

Please, I need guidelines for choosing a shirt printer, or RichieLaw if you or another farker has a suggestion for which printer to use, lay it on me?

libranoelrose: I'm really beginning to think that these threadshiatters are not trolls, just severely mentally challenged.

Some are trolls, some are making assumptions and once they parse what we're doing instead of leaping to conclusions will end up helping out. Those who are here to shiat up the joint won't be convinced anyway, and those that are just incorrect will come around without us berating them. So best to simply let them bluster. They'll either get bored or figure it out. :)

Honestly, I would say the one that provides for free shipping and around 10 or under for the t-shirts and 20 or under for the sweatshirts. I would ideally like the donation to get one of those perks triple the cost. If it is made in the USA that would definitely be my preference.

The Facebook page is a great idea - but a lot of people like to "share" pictures for a cause. I was thinking we could caption something with the link and campaign name that users can post and share across Facebook.

The picture I attached is one of my foster dogs (Hank). I don't want to end up triggering any lawsuits for inappropriate or usage without permission so I just used something on hand. I'm not particularly funny or clever.

RichieLaw:

So are you considering taking orders for the shirts on indiegogo, then block ordering, say, 120 Ts and 75 sweatshirts (or whatever the orders are) and then you (or other farkers) manually shipping each shirt to the donor?

Or do we want each shirt printed on demand and shipped directly to the donor? (this is what I'm imagining)

Also, the mechanism for taking these orders might be different from printer to printer.

I'm going to start surfing these sites to get a feel for whats out there, please give me your suggestions and requirements.

Just an idea... couldn't we break down the trans am into less than $500 parts and then send them to him to be assembled later?

OR

Send him a bunch of gift certificates for parts to the trans am then have a gift certificate valued at $500 for labor to assemble his parts and present it to him?

I'm sure there's a loophole there somewhere...

I was assuming that the perks would be bulk shipped somewhere and then mailed out individually. That seems the most efficient and most cost-effective way. Unless these places are willing to ship the shirts individually without increasing the overall cost.....

Give Joe The Bird Campaign FAQ
etc. etc. etc.

This FAQ and the Press Release should go up on www.givejoethebird.com along with a VERY PROMINENT link to the indiegogo.com page. The way it is now, the link to givejoethebird.com on indiegogo.com gets routed right back to the indiegogo.com page. Maybe a farker good with HTML/CSS could make a cool index.html for givejoethebird.com. And maybe a "Media" page using FinFangFark's list...

Or am I just stating the obvious and this was the plan all along?

Progs amaze me with their astounding levels of idiocy.

from yahoo comments:

@Ronald: "Teabagging" is indeed what some homosexuals do. But they don't belong to the Tea Party. The group who wanted to buy Clinton a blow up doll gave up in dispair when they realized that they didn't know which sex to get him. A man who likes to be done that way too much is way too gay to be straight. And the fact that he married a lesbian from Wellesley should have tipped you off.

is he trying to say getting BJs from fat girls is gay? if so i'm queer as a $3 bill.

Kumana Wanalaia: RichieLaw: Also, do we have consensus on offering a shirt as an award at $30?

I like the idea. I think that there is more potential for lulz than just a white T with the pic on the front and a couple words on the back. Maybe a p-shop contest to cover the front, and a caption contest for the back? Or maybe just a couple of days to get a better design?

Also may I suggest that in addition to the T, that the hooded sweatshirt also be an option. Choices choices choices.

Another alternative back could mention

Fark.com
Give Joe the Bird
the twitter accounts
the names of the charities that benefitted
and other phrases for extra lulz.

BUT, outside of Fark in promotions, things need to be kept at a very low-key and respectful manner. Without anyone promoting this campaign stooping to name-calling in responses, etc.

I've lost $5000 from my pay per year, my wife, who's never had to work before, had to get a part time job just so we could make ends meet and cover the skyrocketing gas, heat, electricity and taxes. It's really hard to be polite when they word vomit all over the comment section. The temptation to be snarky - a temptation that Fark rewards and encourages - is extremely difficult to control when alcohol is added.

I'm all over it. Just let me know how I can help. I let The Onion know about this yesterday, so it's on their radar, and I had dropped a note to the White House asking about gifts yesterday afternoon, but don't expect to hear back from them anytime in the next few days. I also dropped a note to a friend at the Huffington Post, so the odds are good they'll run it in the next couple days as well.

Thank you, sir. Actually, all of the admins and mods have been on this. Yesterday, punkrockgirl personally bumped this again in the evening and tweeted it. Drew's out of town at the moment, but he's in the loop that it's happening. Other admins and mods have been bumping it on FB and Twitter, too.

It's so awesome how many other outlets are picking up on our charity / bringing-internet-meme-to-life drive.

If Al Jazeera picks it up, we will all have officially won the internet.

It's at $5271 right now. It'd be awesome to see it top $6k before the weekend is over.

I wonder if Uncle Joe's handlers have told him about this yet and if so, what was his reaction?

Normally, they'd issue a statement that he and his staff give a thumbs up and got a chuckle out of this. But the fact that his charities are going to benefit from this, I'd like to think he'd be a great sport about it, and join in on the fun.

RichieLaw:

I don't see any sites that offer the on demand service I was hoping for.

We need a farker (or farkers) to receive the bulk shipments from the printer and re-mail the items to the donors.

I'm glommed on to CustomInk.com right now. They are based in Virginia. Their basic turnaround time is 2 weeks; they have a 1 week rush at a 25% premium (and a super rush of 2-4 days, we probably don't need that).

6 color front and 1 color back (text), includes shipping within the contiguous 48 states.

50 white Ts, as above, $14.54 per shirt
100 white Ts, as above, $11.63 per shirt
200 white Ts, as above, $9.52 per shirt
500 white Ts, as above, $7.48 per shirt

Shirts are cheaper if we use less colors, more expensive if we want more colors.

On a white T, we'll need Black, Green, Red, Blue, Pink, and maybe Grey.

That's assuming that we use the Onion pic as is. If the photoshop produces a more colorful pic, we might need more colors.

Or we could limit the palette of the photoshop contest to 5 colors, that way our shirts will come out looking exactly like we expect (apparently CustomInk has artists who do ... something ... to get the images ready for printing on the shirts, and the unexpected has been known to happen).

Here's a quickie I made to dovetail people's love of cat pics w/ our efforts:

[lh3.googleusercontent.com image 500x375]

Feel free to use it, pass it on, etc...

Just posted it on the FB page for all to enjoy!

You know what tshirt might be awesome? The kind with the contrasting neck ring color like we used to wear in the 70's with a real 1970's style Tbird line drawing picture with "Give Joe the Bird 2012" in swoosh writing. Black on green or green on orange etc.

Vintage trans am tshirt

There have to be graphic artist on Fark who could do it.

coeyagi: whidbey: Unfreakable: coeyagi: Gonna be honest here: just googled "jorts". Somehow I missed the worst parts of the 80s.

FTFY

There were good parts?

The movies. Oh lawd, the movies.

Die Hard
Goonies
Real Genius
Back to the Future
Raiders of the Lost Ark
Breakfast Club
Ferris Bueller's Day Off
Rocky IV (ended Cold War)
Predator
Aliens
The Terminator

I'd reckon more of my life has been wasted on these movies than the average calculation for what a person spends on the crapper in their lifetime.

I'll grant there were good movies.

I have a lot of bad memories concerning the music, though. :\

RichieLaw: Thanks so much! That looks great. Once we get the design down we can set up a perk. I think I am going to do a "cheap" t-shirt and then do the photoshopped ones maybe as a special edition or something.

Also, please see unfreakables' posts above regarding providing help for the photoshop threads and stuff.

Noted. Thank you, Unfreakable.

If we print shirts for $10 each, the cost of re-shipping them will be the critical factor.

Everything is closed right now, so I can't call the customer support lines. But if we could get a bulk shipping rate, that could make it possible. Otherwise shipping costs will kill this.

I'm thinking that we'd put in the order once every 2 weeks, hopefully we'll get over 100 orders each cycle. Or we could take all the orders and do one shipment, that would save a lot. But it would mean that the shirts don't get to the donors until over 2 months from now :/

I'm going to relax for a minute and then figure out the max height and width in pixels for the photoshop. Then I'll post tentative phrasings of the photoshop and caption links.

Glad to hear. I was honestly thinking that if the goal here is achieved, why not do it every 4 years regardless of the VP? On one hand, you have the "specialness" of this event diluted a bit, but who wouldn't think buying Ryan a Weiner-mobile wouldn't be fab?

But we get ahead of ourselves...

Not depressing at all! Uplifting.

The tone reminded me, especially in the third act, of Apollo 13.

Affleck is seriously on his game directing. Alan Alda is incredible in Act II.

I loved the movie, loved it loved it loved it. Cried at certain parts, especially a great character redemption scene (you'll know when you see it).

America

America
Where were all a BFD

America
Where the 47% are a BFD

America
Where the 99% are the only BFD

America
Fark Yeah were all a BFD!

/Just goofing off. I guess this would be for the back of the shirt. Personally I would like the picture on the back, but I'll get one to put with my Smoking Gun T-Shirt I won years ago anyway.

My 2 cents:

While some of the text and video on GJTB do have some political connotations, I think the idea is to not get too heavy with the politics, especially the 47%/99%/1% stuff which are heavily divisive right now in the political landscape.

Again, my 2 cents, which thanks to the hyper-inflation of Fartbummer, aren't worth 30 Turkish lira!

If you're using the club in AZ, and promoting both, I don't see why not... but for the main campaign, we might need to refrain from using words like shotgun, kill, massmurder, hate, idiot, etc...You know, the majority of FARK's fun vocabulary words... you know?

I think it's farkin' funny... and thought Silly Jesus' little 'troll' earlier was freakin' hilarious; did a great job describing exactly what we truly are doing in fark snark fashion without using 'bad words'.

I guess, let's just use some good common sense, we got that here on Fark, yes?

J Noble Daggett: Don't Troll Me Bro!: infamy

Infamy? [ inego.jpg ]

I was thinking about how it will solidify the image of Joe Biden the right-wingers have in their minds. It would just be rubbing it in their faces that he's not supposed to be there, but yet here he is... again. Kinda like how they flipped their shiat when Obama's younger daughter wore a grass-stained shirt around the WH. They went completely apeshiat over how the Obama's were just proving they were ghetto trash (and yes, I saw that phrase dozens of times), and this just further proved it.

What if on SNL tonight, they talk about the GJTB project on Weekend Update? Christina Applegate is hosting, and I'm sure she wouldn't mind plugging this since one of the charities is for Breast Cancer. My brain would burst into flames if they did.

We have to be super careful that the donation amount justifies the perk cost. So for shirts and such, the whole cost including shipping should be taken into account. :)

If we're doing a single final order, it will probably be over 100 shirts. The price difference between 6 colors and 8 colors is small.

90 shirts, 6 colors: $12.02 per shirt
130 shirts, 8 colors: $12.05 per shirt

There are big discounts for volume. And I think people are going to want these shirts. I suggest that the photoshoppers use their discretion in picking from 6 to 8 colors, or whatever looks the best.

PS: if we sell only one shirt, the price to print is $25.75 - the price can only go down (plus second leg shipping) from there.

PPS: Also, one of the colors on the palette is White. The T is white. It may (*may*) be possible to omit the printing of the White area, thus freeing a color. CustomInk's site indicates that this is possible.

True, but that would limit the shirt color option to just white. If white is one of the ink colors, any color shirt is possible. That shouldn't incur an upcharge since the same screens would be used regardless of the shirt color. An 8 color pallet, with one being white, sounds like the way to go.

Will they handle pre-press graphic things like trapping and color seps, or does our winning designer have to do that?

True, but that would limit the shirt color option to just white. If white is one of the ink colors, any color shirt is possible. That shouldn't incur an upcharge since the same screens would be used regardless of the shirt color. An 8 color pallet, with one being white, sounds like the way to go.

Will they handle pre-press graphic things like trapping and color seps, or does our winning designer have to do that?

Good point, let's keep white on the palette.

You're right. There are 45 colors available for the shirt, 68 colors if we sell more than six shirts (snerk). CustomInk has in-house artists who do some stuff to get the shirts ready, and they have a customer support phone number and online chat during the day. I don't know what trapping and color seps are, but I think that the more "ready to go" the winning design is, the less likely it will be that our shirts come back looking different that we expected.

Actually we might want to order a couple of shirts ahead of the main order to work the bugs out of the design. I read a review of CustomInk where a guy ordered 4 shirts and he didn't like how they came out. We really don't want to ship out crappy shirts, of course.

2012-10-13 11:17:10 PM

Cyclometh: We have to be super careful that the donation amount justifies the perk cost. So for shirts and such, the whole cost including shipping should be taken into account. :)

Yep. Already considered. :)

I've been following this since it started yesterday and have finally managed to work my way through both threads, this is seriously awesome. Already donated and plan on giving more. One question keeps driving me nuts: How are there still people that don't realize this is about charity and laughs? Fark can't have that many idiots, right?

Also, I just want to say thanks to those of you coordinating all of this (you know who you are). I'd love to contribute more, but don't really have any specific talents that would help. Lets keep this thing going through the weekend and then hit the press hard on Monday!

Also, I would definitely donate a significant amount if it meant getting a t-shirt commemorating this idiocy.

Would you (or another TotalFarker) please post the 'O' in the photoshop link, (http://s7.postimage.org/logixcmq3/Biden_Trans_Am.jpg) along with the palette explanation "The winning photoshop has to be converted into either 6 or 8 colors. and the two palette images (http://s15.postimage.org/68jtfae5z/6_palette.jpg) and (http://s11.postimage.org/yjjd01l6r/complete_palette.jpg)

And in the caption link please submit a post saying "In this caption contest, please arrange your text in a JPG up to 2550w x 3400h in size. Black text on white background, please."

I'm sure they have in-house graphic guys because they have to expect to get PSD, CDR, AI, IND and god knows whatall kind of file types and have to manipulate them for output to a film printer. I wonder if they will send a 1-off 'proof' for final approval, and if they can, does that cost extra? Just keep in mind that color gradients and photo realistic stuff (even if it's 1 color photo realistic) often comes out pretty crappy if the screen operator isn't very good.

/Donated $5

An eight track with Free Bird and Eastbound and Down on a continuous loop.

I have a ton of 8 track tapes with most of the mentioned above, but no doubt the car will be cassette or CD unless it's a real relic

If we do get an '81 pace car T/A I'm pretty sure they came from the factory with an indash am/fm 8 track player. whether it will be working is another story.

Ok, well if that's the case I can donate killer 8 track tapes for the car :)

RichieLaw, the white T I used for price quoting is the cheapest shirt they sell.

It looks like CustomInk prints in the USA (I'm not sure but it looks like it).

However, they have a category of shirts called "Made in USA". I tried to get a quote for a made in USA T, and it came out the same price as the cheap T. But the product index says those shirts are more expensive. I'll call CustomInk tomorrow and try to find out for sure.

If it's possible, obviously we would prefer that the shirts are Made in USA, not just Printed in USA... right?

I'm seeing it, but the reason you're probably not is that you don't have comment preferences enabled. To do that go to the Preferences tab in your profile, scroll down to comment preferences and put a tick in the box next to "In contest threads (Photoshop, Farktopgraphy, captions, etc), see regular comments as well as contest entries", then click on "save prefs".

That should fix it.

So it's called Give Joe the Bird. Then you don't give it to him. Bottom line: What if he falls in love with it and actually wants it?

This.

I was wondering this as well. We should probably change that a little bit. It might get confusing otherwise. Because from what I looked up, he CAN legally accept this car. I don't know that he will, or that he will keep it in place of auctioning it off, but we're kind of painting our self in the corner. My friend asked me "What if he keeps it?" and I didn't really have an answer.

What a perfect opportunity for Joe to match the 25 thou.

I don't see that happening, especially since he's aware or will be made aware of the charities the auction proceeds will go to. Even if he did, I think it's safe to safe that he would match the $25,000.

StevieKo: Cyclometh:
Q: Are you really going to give Joe Biden a Trans Am?
A: Not really. First, he's the Vice President and it wouldn't be cool for him to accept it, although we believe he legally could.

Q: OK... so what ARE you going to do with the Trans Am?
A: Ideally, we're going to buy the car, get it to Washington, D.C. and hopefully get Joe Biden to do a photo op with it- and maybe even sign it! Whether or not that works out, we'll be auctioning the Trans Am and the proceeds will be donated to four charities.

If the Democratic strategists keep him in the loop, I think it'd be great PR for him to actually buy it at the auction.

I just realized that each color of shirt would probably have to be a separate order.

I don't think we can get the per shirt price for 100 shirts if we want 5 white, 5 black, 5 red, etc

But presumably you could get the per good price if you ordered 5 small, 5 medium, 5 large, etc. I don't see shirt color as being much different than shirt size. I used to order blank shirts to print on from a wholesaler and I could order X number of White/Small, Y number of Red/Med and Z number of Grey/XL all on one order and the price point was based on total number of shirts.

Since this is a printer, not a wholesaler, they may do things differently. But if we're ordering 100+ shirts... they ought to work with us.

Hopefully this shiat goes mega-viral in the next couple days. I've already donated and gotten one of the sites already listed to write about it, and If I can afford it, I'll be in for a t-shirt as well. I've never seen so many people work so hard for $5k (in the United States) but you have to give it to them, it's FUNNY!

I'm 100% behind them (except the whole cash thing) and I do hope they get a little airplay -- they deserve it. And most of all, Biden deserves it.

I'm gonna try to join in on the Twitter bomb, but I'm so bad at twitter! I've never twittered anything in my life!

Also, I feel so useless during these things. By the time I think of anything useful and post it, four other people are already talking about how to improve on it since they've already been talking about it for 20 minutes.

I used to lead a Weapons crew, but now I can't lead a Caterday on the internet even if my upvote counted on it!

No worries, just do the best you can; and who cares if someone said something similar to what you were/did/are about to say. That's part of the beauty of the internet, after all :)

Goodnight all!

Yeah, it's just that I wish I could contribute somehow. I think it's just a self-conscious thing since I was discharged from the military. I'm still super-stoked to see this taking off, and how well everyone is doing it. I just miss being effective and working with a team.

Plus, anyone would feel like a dork making four separate suggestions, each on a different occasion, only to find out all of them have been recently reference! Haha, self-inflicted facepalm!
