fairleym: cherryl taggart: I didn't realize how rare cyclists are in my neck of the woods, until one day when little voices from my car seats all piped up at once. "Mommy, Mommy, what's that?" "Mommy, look at those funny clothes." "Mommy, why are those guys riding those funny bikes with their butts in the air?" Before I could answer, my husband calmly replied, "They are practicing for their next game of 'kick my ass'."

Your husband sounds awesome.

And he puts up with me!

Abox: Gunny Highway: Yeah, that all makes sense. "Hipsters" are not the people starting fights or making too much noise. They generally keep to themselves in my experience. They are way down the list of people who bother me when I am out so that is why I am confused about all the hate they get.

Hate is about the hater; the word itself is about brevity. F'rinstance you could have saved a lot of bandwidth in your profile by just typing 'hipster'. The pic, the music, the likes...all that would have been implied.

What music and things should I be enjoying? I think you had already had your mind made up before you looked at my profile. Which things on my profile make me a clear cut hipster? I want to know which things I have been enjoying ironically.

You should enjoy what you enjoy. Probably the biggest giveaway is how defensive you are about being pigeonholed.

Thanks for the advice. Cheers.

living in Bushwick is certainly possible on $15k a year. its not going to be fun though.

one can get an apartment share for $650 a month, or less. its going to be a shiathole though.

its really amazing what people will put up with to have a NYC address.

I just did the first three runs to the office this week on the new bike. Coming back on the first run I got a flat. The dammed Presto valve stem PULLED OUT of the thorn resistant inner tube. Never seen anything like it. Swapped in a spare tube, pumped it up and got home. Kinda pissed me off. Not a good omen for this bike. Haven't even named it yet. But I have ghettoed it up already, with a ghetto rigged kickstand (bike has NO provision for a kickstand), my Walmart dishrack on the back for cargo, lotsa lights and reflectors, bell, fenders, airhorn, computer, yada-yada-yada...

I need something that riffs off of Dr. Jekyll. like Doctor Bike, or something.

The last bike was "Black Lice", because it was a Cannondale Police Cruiser law enforcement bike, and we didn't know if the "Police" printed on the frame was a sticker, or painted on. If it was painted, I was gonna black out the "PO" and ride around on a black bike with "LICE" printed on the side.

Turned out it was a sticker...

Snarky Acronym: A bicyclist hit and killed a pedestrian here on a trail, so yeah this guy could've easily clipped a pedestrian, knocked them over and caused a death or injury.

Here in San Francisco, some douche hipster bike rider ran a red light and killed an old man, then went home and posted on Facebook how upset he was that his bike helmet had been damaged. I would personally like to kick his ass.

I have a driving job but walk/bus on my off time, so I say good on the NYPD for ticketing this asshat: while driving at night, I have to deal with bikers riding without lights, cutting into the lane without signaling, and of course blowing red lights and stop signs. On foot I have to deal with bikers using the sidewalk as a dragstrip (Chinese and South Asian students love doing this; perhaps they're paying homage to their driving skills by doing this) and not yielding to pedestrians at intersections. Cars don't always do this no, but they stand a far better chance of getting ticketed.

I don't like the NYPD or Mike Bloomberg at all, but broken clocks are right twice a day. I would love to see more enforcement of traffic laws against bikers. It's true that no one follows every rule, but you have to follow some

And I would like to help you. In the spirit of the thread though, I'd like to point out that the 'hipster bike rider' part had nothing to do with how terrible he was. It's the 'douche running a red light' part that led to the man's death.

Gunny Highway: Erix: oukewldave: I don't know if he could look any more "hipster-y" than he does in the picture. Maybe some visible stickers on his bike?

Really? Having the earbuds in makes him look a little douchey, but he's not wearing anything ironic, doesn't have skinny jeans, his head/facial hair is unkempt but not intentionally ridiculous.. I'm not really seeing it.

Is flannel and a bike all it takes now?

20-something = hipster

You know who else wore red and black lumberjack (with a hat to match) and lived in Brooklyn?

Was this certain someone in the limelight cause he rhymed tight?

Makes it easier to hear the crunching of the cyclist's bones while running them down. What the hell- you can't savor the moment at 45mph as much as you could at 23.

Cars should be equipped with hooks to take out bikers when they ride two abreast on a single lane highway.

Well, there's your problem. Living in a metropolitan area (which is the natural habitat of self-important douchebags on bicycles) and biatching about said douchebags is like pitching a tent in the Montana wilderness and complaining that bears are constantly trying to eat you.

Move to the suburbs. Arterial speeds are 45 mph. At that speed, the side-draft from the constant stream of soccer moms in Hummers, Rams, and F-350s keeps the cyclists humble and wary, and mostly on the back streets.

obviously you have never met my body. I was impacted by a late 80's Chrysler Lebaron. I saw the crystal hood ornament while at a stop sign and then BOOM. I crushed that mother. Took out headlight to windshield support arms (?) and windshield, with only scrapes and hairline fracture to rib. I tend to get impacted a lot. Beware. :)

I'm glad you got a ticket for riding on the sidewalk, it's for PEDESTRIANS, it gets a bit tiring having to dodge bikers on the goddamn sidewalk. You can't ride your bicycle wherever you want, just like I can't walk onto the Interstate just because I want to.

special20: Cyclists should have to register their vehicle, pay insurance, be licensed, and pass inspections for safety once a year.

That's how it works here in Japan, basically. Of course, biking's WAY more popular here; it's the default mode of urban transport. I bet they do in many other countries, too.

The cops pull cyclists over to check registrations all the time. They love to target teens and foreigners. I don't have to worry about it 'cause I don't ride a bike, even here! I'm too much of a rural American at heart. Plus, I'd probably get myself killed during my first day out.

It's actually really stupid that he got a ticket for riding on the sidewalk, sidewalks are for unpowered traffic, streets are for motor vehicles.

Bicyclists should be ticketed for riding on streets.

To be fair, stop signs typically denote lower overall traffic density. That, and I'd imagine they were all-way stops, too. CSB, though.

No, they deserve extra wrath because they don't follow traffic laws and have some ludicrous belief that their well-being is not at risk when they change lanes without looking and fly through intersections while advancing to the next She & Him song on their playlists.

i commute to work by bike daily. if i am approaching an intersection with 4-way stop signs i'll slow down to make sure i can pass through safely. sometimes an approaching motorist arrives at their stop sign when i am about to roll into the intersection. typically they'll just politely wave me through. i respond with a reciprocate wave of appreciation.

stop lights are different, but if there's no traffic i'm obviously going to proceed despite the color of the light.

ideally, i will never encounter any of the sociopathic motorists in this thread.

He must be new to riding in NYC and a little dim witted or have poor vision if he did not notice the cop watch him go through 4 red lights, so he does deserve the tickets. I do not live in a very big city... but I would bet my LIFE there is not f'n way in hell a stupid pig could have caught me (or a few select friends) if we took off from them in our neighborhood while in our riding days, during our teen years.
Between knowing the "rough" brick streets where we could easily outrun a run because it was downhill and a car at a higher speed would most likely wind up hitting one too many dips and wrecking into cars parked on either side of the street... to one way streets (including a 3 lane that was always packed with traffic)...

Oh yeah, and the time we actually had cops after us...

I haven't been on a bike in years and do not plan on doing so anytime soon.. but, think this giving tickets to people riding bikes and taking points off a driver's licence is nothing but flat out armed robbery.

Why is it robbery? I have very real problems dealing with bicycling scofflaws when I'm on my bicycle. I was nearly hit once by a jerk running a stop sign, and I have idiots riding down the wrong side of the street towards me on a regular basis. The shoulder is narrow enough as it is, I don't need dopes who don't know what side of the street they're supposed to be riding thrown into the mix. The entitled attitude of "I'm on a bicycle, I shouldn't have to obey your petty rules" is complete BS, and if it takes expensive fines to end it, I'm completely fine with that. As someone who rides on the right side of the road, and stops for both signs and lights, I have nothing to fear from an enforcement crackdown.

If you're a cop, definitely. Standard procedure is draw gun, step in front of a moving car, think "it's coming right at me", blow the driver away, then jump to safety because killing the driver doesn't stop the car.

Last week as I recall, it was a wheel chair that threatened a cop's life.
