Work at a University, when driving in the crazy streets at work I have to pay far more attention to the bikes than the cars. Douche bags refuse to obey any traffic laws, yet expect all the rights.

Hipster in New York who makes $12,000 a year and can afford hipster toys in Williamsburg? Trustfund baby!

I once watched a jackass self-clothes line and collapse in the middle of an intersection he was crossing on a redlight when his comically long scarf got caught up in his rear wheel's spokes. It was probably the best example of instant karma I've ever witnessed.

The Face Of Oblivion: Gunny Highway: Bull shiat to this tired story.

You are burying the needle on the butthurt hipster meter. You're like Bevets in a thread about jeebus.

That story is bull shiat.

And if you think I'm a hipster because I don't agree with everyone that is done by me.

Poor fashion sense = strangling.

Karma is, it seems, a biotch.

No, I think you're a hipster because it's obvious you are emotionally involved in defending other hipsters. Review briefly your responses in this thread and see how GAHHHH OFFENDED you are that people are making fun of the shiathead in the article and similarly situated shiatheads.

No, he's not, that's what he makes and his parents cover the rest of his bills.

I used to have a diesel rabbit back in the day. I looooooved it when some jackhole would come up and tailgate me because he thought going 30 in a 25 just wasnt rast enough for him... so I would put it in fifth and hit the accelerator and out comes a beautiful cloud of black smoke.. It never failed and they backed off.

Okay. I don't think I was ever offended. Just pointing out that the word has lost all meaning and is applied to all young people. Again, just disagreeing with people's strange hatred of a group of people.

I dislike bikers who don't follow the traffic laws too.

How does a minimum wage earning douche like this guy afford to live in New York? I bet he lost some serious cash too during the last OWS event.

lordargent: $1555 = about one-tenth of his annual income?

So is annual income is about $15,550 ... in new york?

Aren't hipsters supposed to have money, you know, to buy all of that ironic hipster swag?

HE hearns $15k a year. What they dont mention is the 50k he gets from his parents back home in Ohio/Iowa/Washington/etc

No, he didnt get three tickets for doing one thing wrong. He did three things wrong, it just happened to be the same type of 'wrong' each time.

If i shoot three people standing on a corner, do i only get charged for one murder???

there are plenty of aging hipsters as well. The people who head back into college in their late 30s-50s who learn macrame, drink chianti, and place a few well chosen books on the coffee table who think they discovered radio head and coldplay, and get a lizard tatted on their foot and a acquire a nose ring, usually getting a red streak dyed in.

Friday nights are spent at the local hookah bar eating stuffed grape leaves and wondering aloud if they should sign up for belly button classes.

I don't hate any of them, everyone just wants to belong in the end right? It is all very tribal and conforming when groups dress, think, and act alike.

However, being a rebel is not becoming a cliche of a demographic that you aspire to belong to.

And you label yourself a young, urban dweller, you deserve the title hipster.

I'm not even a driver, I hate cyclists from the pedestrian perspective of having nearly been hit by a few who thought the traffic laws didn't apply to them.

I run lights all the time when there is no cross traffic. Big farking deal. I slow down a lot to make sure though. I live in a dense urban hood.

I don't wear headphones. That's full retard.

I also pull way to the right at red lights so cars don't have to wait for my ass when green happens and if I see a car behind me wanting to turn right I inch into the cross walk so they can still get through. There is still enoug room usually for crossing peds to not have to avoid me.

I also ride with lights at night.

I can nearly promise that a close call will not be a result of my stupidity, but then again, riding a bike is inherently dangerous in urban areas.

Yeah, that all makes sense. "Hipsters" are not the people starting fights or making too much noise. They generally keep to themselves in my experience. They are way down the list of people who bother me when I am out so that is why I am confused about all the hate they get.

And what the heck is a belly button class haha.

Kid the Universe: /not a New Yorker but been here 10 years now. true "New Yorkers" are as provincial and small-minded as any of you other idiots who have never left home. but that's cool, because places like New York collect people who decided to cut the cord and move away from Mommy and Daddy. anyone who can make it here on their own for years on end is better for it and exactly the kind of person i'd like to share a round of drinks with. the rest of you cletuses please stay in podunk

And that is perfectly fine with us. Like you said, New York is built on people coming here and starting a new life.

What we object to is the people who come here on 'extended vacations'. They move here, often to place like trendy brooklyn or the bowery for as long as their parents money lasts, then they go back home and make sure that when he is hanging out with friends he in interject into every conversation with "you know, when i lived in brooklyn..."

They treat it like its some kind of post-college program. So they can write down their time spent here on their resumes.

New York is welcome to you to come and live with us. But please, just dont come here "for the experience" because if that is your objective, you will never see the real New York anyway. Stay home and stay our of our way.

1. No helmet
2. Nonreflective clothing
3. ipod (roughly 1/10th his traffic ticket).
4. Him being an idiot and just checking guilty instead of doing research and then he gets upset about the bill.

If you have no money, you cannot afford to be an idiot and pretend to have contempt for the system because you just assumed that it was going to cost you a few happy meals at mcdonalds.

Now that people know what you look like, they might be less likely to hit their brakes when they see you (or someone in black/red flannel) run a red light or a stop sign.

Before I could answer, my husband calmly replied, "They are practicing for their next game of 'kick my ass'."

Crazy drivers are protected by two tons of steel. Crazy bikers are protected by the iPod they're listening to.

Defensive driving is not going to prevent you from hitting the D-bag with a rolled-up pants cuff who ignores the stop light and cruises into your path at 25 miles an hour.

Not a fixed-gear bike = not a hipster.

Not sporting an ironic beard or mustache (just a normal one) = not a hipster.

Not wearing thick-rimmed retro glasses even though he doesn't need them = not a hipster.

This is just a dude with a bike who has that cyclist philosophy that traffic laws aren't for him, unless they work in favor of him versus cars. Not a hipster... A douchebag.

Hmmm, whips out the calculator...

three lights, $1555. thus approx $500/light

I run 2 dozen lights or stop signs per 34 mile round trip to work in Philly

Done 18,000 miles on two bikes over 12 years equals 529 trips

Fines per trip: $500 times 24 = $12,000

$12,000 times 529 trips = 6.3 MILLION DOLLARS

YEEESSSSSSS!

Drivers should be fined just as steeply for offenses. When I hear people complain about $50 speeding tickets my thought is usually about how it will do nothing to teach them a lesson. A $1500 ticket might be more influential.
