I hear bicycles have a sensor that slows their riders intelligence by 50% when they are riding,

oh, FFS:

Our brains manipulate physical energy in order to sustain a perception of space and time. The most obvious example being the intake of food and water to sustain the physical body but also the intake of all sensory information and output of physical energy on various tasks throughout the waking day. Our dreams are the mind manipulating with physically imperceivable energy. Most of the time the energy controls us in a dream.

Stephen_Falken: People who ride bikes in heavy traffic are willfully ignoring modern reality of commuting. If they continue to try to force their viewpoints on the rest of society, they deserve to be outcast. Or run over. Or ticketed by the pigs. Especially the uniformed ones with their little prophylactic head bonnets. Or these urban hipsters with their fixies. Jesus f*cking christ.

jesus farking christ this place hates people on bikes.

He already pleaded guilty.

In Upstate New York traffic courts you can plea bargain down one step if you are on your own and two steps if you have a lawyer. For a speeding ticket the steps are 15 over, 5 over, zero point non-speed violation, parking ticket. So they'll let you plead to 60/55 when charged with 70/55, and they'll let your lawyer turn it into a non-speed violation which is much better by DMV rules. Some judges are more or less generous. They might let an ordinary driver off with a parking ticket. They might require represented defendants to take a speed violation if the original charge was speeding, i.e. XX over becomes 5 over.

New York City and Suffolk County are different. Tickets go to Traffic Violations Bureau, a DMV-run kangaroo court. There is no judge. There is an administrative hearing officer. He has a conviction quota. They do not normally consider plea bargains. Rubber stamp guilty in most cases. If you have a lawyer you have a chance of a not guilty verdict after trial (hearing), otherwise guilty as charged. This is an unusual case and the hearing officer might have felt enough pity to drop three red light violations down to one or two.

Bloomberg is not so in love with bicyclists that he will prevent them from getting any tickets. Mayor Menino in Boston is.

This.

$1555 is more like one month's rent in a small and cramped apartment, overlooking the dump

eurotrader: So the guy on the bike got caught by a cop in a car. He must be new to riding in NYC and a little dim witted or have poor vision if he did not notice the cop watch him go through 4 red lights, so he does deserve the tickets. Unless the cop knew him and had a dislike I can not picture any cop getting out of the car to chase him down very far.

So he should get the tickets only because he got caught? How about because he blew through the red lights?

You do realize that he's not posing on a fixie, right? Those things on the handlebars are brake levers, so he could have easily stopped for all those stop lights. But you guys just keep on being jerks.

orbister: FTFA: Bushwick artist Daniel Greer, 24, who admittedly went through three red lights while wearing headphones, said he did not at first realize he was being pulled over near Lorimer and Grand Sts. on his bike ride home from his photography assistant gig on Sept. 7.

So which is he?

Both? Assisting is a job and artist is from art. I know a guy whose paintings sell for thousands of dollars, with gallery reps on west coast, east coast and europe... but by day, he is an IT guy.

I used to be a photo assistant - now am a commercial shooter who employs assistants. It's hard work for not much pay. But it's essential if you want to move on to successfully landing productions yourself.

No, double-dipping would be where, for example, a car turned right on red when there was a sign against it, and the driver got dinged for 'running a red', 'ignoring a warning sign', and maybe 'failure to yield at a crosswalk' - all for doing one single thing.

This is running one red light, then continuing down the road and running another red light, then continuing down the road and running a third red light. That's three offenses in my book, and he deserves three dings. Whether the fine should escalate for each is another question, but this is really three separate offenses here.

I'm not too upset about bicyclists who don't ride in suicidal fashion, but I am wondering about the whole concept of "share the road." We all own the roads, as we all paid for them. Okay. We own the broadcast spectrum, right? The peoples' airwaves. Can I start my own radio station and use whatever frequency I like? We own the air collectively...can I just build a plane and fly wherever I like?
