Cyclists should have to register their vehicle, pay insurance, be licensed, and pass inspections for safety once a year.

Metalupis: notmtwain: If it gets him to stop at red lights and pay attention while he is cycling, it might be the best $1,155 he ever spends.

As someone who bikes for fun on the weekends, I agree with this soooooo much

As someone who bikes to work every day, RIMS.

kmmontandon: The NYPD should just confiscate all his flannel and force him to shave clean for a month.

That'd wound him more than anything.

Use the same anti-tampering technology they use in ankle bracelets to force him to carry a Zune.

Why would you pose for a tabloid piece in which you admit you were doing something as dumb as wearing earphones while ignoring traffic laws in a busy metropolis? I dunno. I don't think any self-respecting hipster would be caught dead in a Daily News piece unless there was palpable irony to it.

jake_lex: xynix: I live in the burbs.. Not many cyclists out here and of those that are they're the tight clothes logo wearing kind. A special kind of douche..

I hate cyclists who just ride around town in those skin tight shorts. This isn't the farking Tour de France, asshole, I don't wanna see your package.

Except in football, where wearing shiny silk tights is the height of hurly-burly macho manhood, and totally not gay.

thismomentinblackhistory: Cars should be equipped with sensors that slow their speed ~50% when a bicycle is near.

And when you are rushing your buddy to the hospital because an ambulance was too far and the shotgun wound has caused massive bleeding, how do you account for Dakotah on the nearby sidewalk learning how to ride his/her bike?

Don't put the sensors on little kids bikes you say?

Oh great, now we will have hipsters tearing around town on little kids bikes... safety flag swaying in the wind and bike leaning left to right as it bears on the training wheels.

A bicyclist hit and killed a pedestrian here on a trail, so yeah this guy could've easily clipped a pedestrian, knocked them over and caused a death or injury.

kevinatilusa: Good. Fine the heck out of cyclists when they break traffic laws. And fine the heck out of drivers who ignore the rules of the road around cyclists.

If only the cops would start ticketing cars that run red lights, not use turn signals, and generally just fack my shiat up every day. Cyclists are the least of my worries when I'm on the road.

/Yes, I live near Chinatown, why do you ask?

3/10 here, but save it - it looks like about a 7-8/10 in the typical bike thread.

As a pedestrian who almost got creamed by a cyclist blowing a red light at about 30+ mph in Central Park last weekend, I applaud this cop. It would be nice to see the cops in the park giving tickets to those asshats though.

As a driver who has nearly hit a cyclist that ran a stop sign, good for the cops.

Funny thing is, when I nearly hit this cyclist, I honked and he threw his hands up in the air like "wtf did I do wrong, bro?"

Obey the laws and I have no problems with cyclists, but they're so douchey sometimes it drives me nuts, and i don't even live in a big city

Bushwick artist Daniel Greer,

on his bike ride home from his photography assistant gig

Well I am confused, is he a flannel wearing cutting edge hipster artist OR an underemployed underappreciated photo assistant?

The red-light tickets worked out to cost between $190 and $940 because he was considered a repeat offender after running the first one.

I'm gonna say that's bullshiat because being punished more severely as a repeat offender is partly because you're adding the element of willfully disregarding the punishment you received the first time and defying the law again despite being caught before.

What's next, apply a three strikes law on the first arrest by putting people under surveillance and not arresting them till they commit three felonies?

Gunny Highway: Erix: oukewldave: I don't know if he could look any more "hipster-y" than he does in the picture. Maybe some visible stickers on his bike?

Really? Having the earbuds in makes him look a little douchey, but he's not wearing anything ironic, doesn't have skinny jeans, his head/facial hair is unkempt but not intentionally ridiculous.. I'm not really seeing it.

Is flannel and a bike all it takes now?

20-something = hipster

You know who else wore red and black lumberjack (with a hat to match) and lived in Brooklyn?

Never gonna happen with fake hippy Mayor McCheese in charge. The dude is OK with the open drug dealing going on in the downtown core, and he's OK with asshat bicyclists breaking every traffic law on the books.

No. Not 'easily'. Grave accidents involving bicyclists as a cause are very, very rare.

People who ride bikes in heavy traffic are willfully ignoring modern reality of commuting. If they continue to try to force their viewpoints on the rest of society, they deserve to be outcast. Or run over. Or ticketed by the pigs. Especially the uniformed ones with their little prophylactic head bonnets. Or these urban hipsters with their fixies. Jesus f*cking christ.

Sadly, due to his low income the judge is going to let him off and dismiss all but one red light violation as long as he pleads guilty to it, and possibly reduce that one too, because the traffic court docket is so overburdened. That's just how traffic court works, whether you're innocent or guilty they just grind you through and give you bad deals to avoid worse pain.

2012-10-13 02:54:09 PM
While I agree with ticketing cyclists who break traffic laws, this seems like a misuse of the "three strikes" law to me.

Besides, a conversation with a cop, and some education, rather than a ticket, might be a more effective means of convincing cyclists not to ride like jerks. It puts them on notice that someone's watching, that cyclists have to obey the rules of the road, and that what they're doing is dangerous. For many, the delays inherent to getting pulled over are more of an annoyance than the money.

Of course, that's assuming that this is really about safety and not about revenue collection.

Threads involving bicycling always seem to lead to more frothy hate than pretty much any other topic. It's kinda weird, you guys. Bicyclists can be douches, but most of them aren't any worse than drivers.

Dirt poor students and unemployed slackers have always been the true hipsters of the world, all the way back to Bohemian times in Vienna. The trustafarians just occasionally co-opt and commercialize their poor, shiatty lives to glorify squabbling over run-down abandoned buildings and pharmacologic-assisted escapism, because growing up is miserable whether you're penniless and bipolar or well-pennied with ennui. Of course checking out of society and forming your own looks attractive to them, as long as they get to bring along all of their creature comforts and fashions.

Hahahahaha. I had a hipster kid in about 2007 tell me it was ok to make out with other dudes as long as you didn't go all the way you weren't gay, then he preceded to make out with another flaming hipster for ten minutes and I think their beards got stuck together.

I banged his girlfriend that night because she said this to me "i am tired of talking about his feelings, listening to bad poetry, I just want to get drunk and farked."

Trust me fellas, hipster girls are easy to bang. You just got to wash em off first.
