(Slate)   What's that in the sky? It's a planet 40 light years away. Look again. THE PLANET IS NOW DIAMONDS   (slate.com) divider line 56

Mister Peejay: RedVentrue: Mister Peejay: RedVentrue: I bet it's the leftover core of a gas giant.

Wonder what knocked its orbit so close to its sun that it blew all of the gas away.

Gas giants that close to the star get thier atmosphere blown away by "solar" winds.

I bet our giants have similar cores.

My point is, it had to have been a gas giant for a while in order to form a diamond core, so presumably then it used to have a stable orbit much further out,

Things happen in planetary systems to make planets change orbits. Gas Giants form in the outer parts of planetary systems, then sometimes get pulled into inner orbits, wreaking havoc with the other planets on the way through. One current theory has Uranus and Neptune changing places because of gravitic pulses created when Jupiter passed Saturn in thier orbits.

Fascinating. I'll have to hunt that down and have a read.

Quantum Apostrophe: 3D print a warp drive and mine that sucker. Why we can't just 3D print all the diamonds we want here with our warp-drive capable technology is a mystery.

u can't!

/3D prints himself some Vicodin and weed
