You read stuff like this, and look at the history of the Soviet Union's relationships with some of its "allies", like the People's Republic of China and Yugoslavia, and you realize what a total joke this notion of there being some huge, unified Communist conspiracy was.

When you consider the history of both Cuba and Russia, given the invasions and experience with Imperialist powers, is it any wonder they wanted nukes? Really?

Especially at a time when the only power that had actually used the bombs was stockpiling them like they were Pez?

Mikoyan came to a personal decision that under no circumstances should Castro and his military be given control of weapons with an explosive force equal to 100 Hiroshima-sized bombs.

I don't think a mission to Cuba was required to learn that. You give your ally of convenience factories and supplies, jets and tanks, not nukes.

So then I looked at all the media from the 60s-80s where they talked about everything from education to censorship and how the communists were just trying to take over at every step if we didn't do some jingoistic thing as opposed to a rational thing. And I applied it to all the times we had to do the same things for the muslim terrorists.

Now it's socialists, because everything old is new again.

That's nothing. The entire world was once saved because a Soviet operator refused to consider a cloud an incoming nuclear missile. Link. If he had only followed through with his orders, the world would have been nuked.

Depends on how you want to look at it. I'm not saying the US is innocent in the middle east, not by a long shot, but a LOT of the hate for western civilization actually comes from Russian propaganda agents spreading the Great American Satan ideas around. They had over 2000 agents operating in Egypt alone with this as their sole mission.

It has nothing to do with communism, it has to do with global control, communism is just a cover story thats trying to get religion out of control of the people.

The Mitrokhin archives talks about this. The one thing they were really, really good at doing was spreading dissent. Fascinating book that explains the origins of myth's like CIA shooting Kennedy and the extents that the Russians went through to build and propagate those myths.

I am Fidel Castro, and I'm here to ask you a question. Is a man not entitled to nukes? 'No!' says the man in Washington, 'It belongs to the military industrial complex' 'No!' says the man in the Vatican, 'It belongs to God.' 'No!' says the man in Moscow, 'It belongs to Kruschev.' I rejected those answers; instead, I chose something different. I chose the impossible. I chose... Nukeylvania, a state where the Evil Midnight Bomber What Bombs At Midnight would not fear the thug in tights, where the scientist would not be bound by petty morality, Where the great would not be constrained by the small! And with the sweat of your brow, Nukeylvania can become your state as well.

Yes. Considering how efficient and competent government (ANY government) usually is. Including, or especially, the military. Makes you wonder how much of it on both sides was Kabuki Theater for the entertainment and regimentation of the proles.

I remember the Cuban missile crisis quite well. My father was in the Strategic Air Command and we were stationed at a large SAC base, the primary mission of which was to annihilate Cuba within two hours of the order. Because of this, the base was a primary target. One evening in October, when I was in the first grade, the phone rang. It was my father's alert pyramid caller. The color drained from his face and within minutes, with barely a word, he was gone. There was no contacting him as all external communication lines to the base had been cut. But in the early evening a few days later, my father snuck off the base, found pay phone and called my mother. His instructions were to get us in the car and get us the hell out of there NOW. I was too young to understand what any of this meant besides it had something to do with the duck-and-cover drills we did at school. As we were loading the car, the alert klaxon at the base sounded. As we were headed out of town, the B-52s started their minimal interval take offs. I knew my dad was aboard one of them. I didn't see him again for two weeks. It was several years before I came to understand the significance of these events.

You know, I didn't think I needed to make it clear that Communism is a bad system and that guys like Stalin and Mao rank up there with Hitler as the Most Evil Dictators Of All Time. I guess I forgot this is the Politics tab.

Anyway, my point is that the prevailing anti-Communist narrative of the '50s and up into the '60s, that of a monolithic, unified "Communist Bloc", was total bullshiat. Ironically, it was one of the biggest proponents of that myth, Richard Nixon, who figured that out, and started exploiting the divides between Communist states by doing things like opening relations with China. But as the Vulcans have always said, "It takes a Nixon to go to China."

And don't forget, that they were atheist is critically important somehow, despite never killing people in the name of non-religion. Also, any mass murder you can point out of religious people doing it specifically in the name of religion is a gross oversimplification and should not be considered as representative of religion.
