Just make it illegal to go slow in the left lane. Ignore all speeding violations in lieu of this. Pull over all the slow pokes, arrest them, and leave their driving machines on the side of the road. When all the bad drivers are in jail, good drivers won't have to use drugs to stay sane anymore.

It would be utopia.

I drove through Texas recently and it wasn't bad. In most places I've been two lane (per direction) highways with light traffic are fine, busy roads are hopeless, and wide roads fill up in the middle first.

fark installing signs, Texas needs to start a campaign that is as memorable as the "Dont Mess With Texas" slogan is. Driving in Texas is absurd at best. Too many idiots driving the speed limit or less in the left hand and middle lanes and no one at all in the far right lane driving slow.

I've wanted a giant obnoxious bumper sticker that reads "IF I AM PASSING YOU ON YOUR RIGHT, YOU'RE WRONG" for years now...

Pretty much. The cities are bad, but between them is open road.
/ Do NOT drive in Houston during rush hour.
// Note that rush hour in Houston is actually about 18 hours every day, including weekends.

I want you to get the fark out of the left lane so I can pass you. Don't ac all hoity toity about me breaking the law by speeding when you're in clear violation of Sec. 545.051

The only time I self-police in traffic is when I can stop people from bypassing the giant line that has already properly zippered into a merge 500 feet before the lane ends. We've already negotiated this properly, we don't need you driving around us to try to merge 10 cars in front of you.

I'll absolutely pull halfway into the abandoned lane to keep more cars from simply driving around the courteous drivers.

What I WON'T do is stop you from driving on the shoulder to get up to the next exit when clearly the bumper to bumper traffic is not getting off at that exit.

Hrm...

On the one hand, I like the idea of keeping the left lane for faster traffic, just so you don't give the "traffic policing" types license to be dickbags. Or people hauling trailers who can't go above a certain speed. So on and so forth.

On the other hand, I'm worried this new signage will be used as veneer-thin justification for another Texas tradition: bias-motivated traffic stops. "Why hello there, attractive and successful African-American. Seems you traveled more than 500 feet in the left lane, so let me just wander slowly back to my patrol car to get my paperwork to write up a warning AND OH MY HOW DID THAT 2 POUND BAG OF POT FALL OUT OF YOUR TAILPIPE AS IF ON CUE. Strange coincidence. Welp, time to nightstick you into a coma and impound your vehicle."

/Not every traffic stop would go that horrifically
//But the cops will have an easier time of handing out crap tickets

It's already illegal, with or without signage. The signs are just meant to be a redundant reminder for idiots.

/ I'm generally opposed to the idea of "reminder" signs. People tend to think that the law only applies in places where the signs are posted (i.e. you seem to have just done that).
// Like the "bikes may use full lane" signs we have in a few points around town. No shiat, Sherlock.

It's true, it's funny, and it just might alleviate a little bit of the road rage that exists today.

It's already illegal, with or without signage.

Based on my reading of Texas statutes and case law,

1. The general rule is keep right when you are driving slower than other traffic. Transportation Code 545.051(b).

2. When the DOT posts a sign informing drivers of this law the sign must read "left lane for passing only." Transportation Code 544.011.

3. Posting this informative sign changes the law to actually limit use of left lane to passing only, and it is no longer legal to cruise in the left lane side by side with right lane traffic. There was a drug bust based on a pretext stop for driving in the left lane without passing. The court system needed to construe the law this way to uphold the conviction (otherwise it was an illegal stop).

unyon: How can you tell the difference until they're past you?

Ugh, don't make me explain this to you. In one scenario, there are two lanes that drop down to one. In the other scenario, lanes of traffic are lined up past an exit. A car pulls onto the shoulder to skip ahead to the exit. If they tried to cut back in to go past the exit, they'd catch a lot of shiat.

Maybe they'd get away with it. Who cares?

I used to be a terror on the roads with a t-bird, stoned, an aggressive drive.

then one day I'm beating the clock to work doing the speed those interstate highways were built for back in the early 70s when i saw something that gave me pause. Indeed, almost moment of enlightenment.

So I was doing 80 when I hit that 29/80 merger east o' Omaha and this big old pepto-bismal pink mary kay caddilac was PULLING AHEAD OF ME while the chick driving did her make-up in the rear-view mirror.

after that? yeah....I drive a 4 banger camry, use my turn signals, and rarely approach the speed limit.

I've been tailgated while in the act of passing. I don't go insanely fast. The speed limit on the Interstate Highway I travel is 65, my speedometer often reads 70, so I'm probably going 67 to 68. I do go back over to the right as soon as I'm done passing, but when people decide to tailgate because they didn't leave early enough to be on time, it annoys me, and it tempts me to slam on my brakes. Be patient when the person is obviously passing some else. I rarely do that since it's not what you're supposed to do. Granted, I've seen people driving slow in the left lane while not in the act of passing, which also annoys me.

It wont be ignored if its enforced, I think there is about 5 cops for every 3 citizens in this scorched shiathole. But I'm certain this is just another excuse for these pigs to fark with people. Its sounds like a great idea, but whoever is responsible for voting for this must have forgotten somehow that these cops are lesser than the scum of their parts. Or they are fine with it, which is just as likely if not more so.

Technically, passing on the right is legal in Ohio ... facepalm ... I hate this state ...

4511.28 Overtaking and passing upon the right of another vehicle.

(A) The driver of a vehicle or trackless trolley may overtake and pass upon the right of another vehicle or trackless trolley only under the following conditions:

(1) When the vehicle or trackless trolley overtaken is making or about to make a left turn;

(2) Upon a roadway with unobstructed pavement of sufficient width for two or more lines of vehicles moving lawfully in the direction being traveled by the overtaking vehicle.

I just hate it when I'm passing somebody that can't make up there mind if they want to go 10 under the speed limit or 10 over. As soon as they see me passing them on the left, they realize they're going too slow and speed up. So they either drive faster than I am, or they go the same speed. Then if I try to get over behind them, they go 10 under the speed limit again. So unless I decide to go 20 over the speed limit, I can't pass them and then I'm driving in the left lane illegally because they're too busy playing with their cell phones to realize they're driving like an asshole.

My wife was road raging while driving from Seattle to Spokane today because of all the stupid left lane campers on I-90 today. Those farkers came out of the woodwork to piss her off. The worst are the truckers that fark up everyone else just to get ahead of another rig that is going marginally slower than them on a hill, so you have a whole line of cars forced to do 60 in a 70 while the one truck passes the other like a tortoise race.

Fark them. Fark them right up their asses.

Yes but if movies and television have taught us anything it's that self-driving cars result in a Demolition Man-like future where all restaurants are Taco Bell and Wesley Snipes is a dangerous criminal.

Oh crap, Snipes is still in jail isn't he? We're halfway there, people.

I blame this phenomenon on city people who have virtually zero experience driving on highways. Note that I'm a city person.

Please note, the sign says "passing lane," not "fast lane." There's no requirement to be going faster than the speed limit. Only requirement is to be passing. I am under no obligation to facilitate your chosen speed.

If you don't tailgate me too badly, however, I will move over for you. Because I'm a nice guy.

Yep, those are the worst. People that don't care how fast they are going, so long as they let no one get past them. Interstate cockblockers. They're more likely to cause a lifetaking collision then the squid on a Hayabusa doing a consistent 85.

90 in a 65 is not inherently dangerous, road, traffic, and weather conditions permitting.

And regardless of what speed you're doing, if you can move to the right, you should. If you're being passed on the right, chances are you've had an opportunity to move over to the right and you didn't take it.
