She found out she has stage II breast cancer in May, I found out I have stage II non-hodgkin's lymphoma in July. We're both going through chemotherapy, surgery, etc and doing our best to support each other.

It depends on whether its IIIA, IIIB or IIIC. IIIA has a 78% 5 year survival rate, but this is highly variable and the treatment has to be swift and aggressive. Follow-up treatments are essential. What I don't understand is that usually by stage II, melanomas begin to be easily damaged and readily bleed and become irritated. One would think he would have discovered something was wrong earlier just by combing/brushing his hair.

Just goes to show that you need a loved one to look at those nether regions you cannot see occasionally.

We screwed around when we were in college over a decade ago. We've both moved on and have found love. She's getting remarried next month and I've been with my current partner for the past ten years. No reason, we're just good friends now as there was never any bitterness over the breakup, we just went our own ways.

Shaved my head when my aunt was going through chemo. Wasn't a big deal since I sported the look 3 times before that (twice for swimming, once because my girlfriend dyed my hair for a costume party). Glad I didn't find any cancer under there.

Thanks, I feel lucky compared to her, she had to have all her girly parts removed, can't even imagine how hard that must be. We're both expected to make full recoveries. She caught it early thanks to self exams (PSA - check yourself regularly, early detection is critical) and I just got plain lucky and had a rare extranodal tumor that caused me intense pain, there is no way to screen for lymphoma. Because we're both young (early thirties) and healthy, both of us have good prognosis, my 5 year survival odds are at 95%.

Irony is overrated. I would file this under "Life Is A Crapshoot"... this time, in a good way. But then, I'm jaded and cynical in a cosmic joke kind of way. It's all the cracks in the earth since 1968. Even Superman would be sarcastically cynical.

You know, as much as people use the word "irony" wrong, the irony police are also usually wrong when they criticize the alleged misuse.

Most situational irony is *implied*. It *is* ironic to have rain on your wedding day because it is implied that you chose the wedding day to be least likely to have bad weather -- I know my wife certainly researched what day would have the best weather. It is ironic to have a fly in your Chardonnay because when you paid and selected a wine with expectation of it being the best. You don't have to say "I'm going to pay to have a fly-free wine" for it to be ironic to get the one glass with the fly...

Situational irony (as per Wikipedia) "describes a discrepancy between the expected result and actual results in a certain situation". So all you need is the expectation, and expectations can be (and usually are) implicit.
