I don't know if this should have the Florida tag. That tag is for stories that make you shake your head and say "only in Florida".

This isn't just Florida where this is happening. As part of the SOLs in Virginia, at least 92% of Asians must be proficient, while 90 percent of the white kids must be proficient in a subject. It drops down to 80% for blacks and Hispanics -- because God forbid we except them to do well.

The liberal in the article was right. This basically IS proclaimed racism.

And Affirmative Action is ALSO proclaimed racism. It's essentially the same thing as this. Holding certain minorities to lower standards, merely because of their race.

Acknowledging reality makes you an asshole? Good to know. If you find a state where Asians>whites>Hispanics>blacks doesn't hold, alert the media! Fame and fortune will be yours.

Of course, this lady is living in a fantasy world too. Right now, according to the article, 38% of black students are reading at or above grade level. Under her plan 74% are supposed to be at or above grade level in 2018, six years from now. That will not happen, unless they water down the standards to Cat In The Hat level.

They are opposed to it when it shows their true feelings towards minorities, that being that they are inferior when it comes to intellegence and learning.

That beig said, the libtards are all for affirmative action if they can brand the "white man" as a racist and that they [the libtards] are "fixing institutional racism".

Actually, all of these targets are fantasies. Currently FTA 69% of white students are reading at or above grade level, and that figure is supposed to be brought above 88% in six years. That is almost as absurd as the black target, which is to double the percentage of readers at or above grade level in six years. People are upset about different targets for different races, but they really should be upset that the State Board of Education is churning out fantasy numbers. Orwell covered this decades ago, though he was writing about boots.

But actually, he thought as he re-adjusted the Ministry of Plenty's figures, it was not even forgery. It was merely the substitution of one piece of nonsense for another. Most of the material that you were dealing with had no connexion with anything in the real world, not even the kind of connexion that is contained in a direct lie. Statistics were just as much a fantasy in their original version as in their rectified version. A great deal of the time you were expected to make them up out of your head. For example, the Ministry of Plenty's forecast had estimated the output of boots for the quarter at one-hundred-and-forty-five million pairs. The actual output was given as sixty-two millions. Winston, however, in rewriting the forecast, marked the figure down to fifty-seven millions, so as to allow for the usual claim that the quota had been overfulfilled. In any case, sixty-two millions was no nearer the truth than fifty-seven millions, or than one-hundred-and-forty-five millions. Very likely no boots had been produced at all. Likelier still, nobody knew how many had been produced, much less cared. All one knew was that every quarter astronomical numbers of boots were produced on paper, while perhaps half the population of Oceania went barefoot. And so it was with every class of recorded fact, great or small. Everything faded away into a shadow-world in which, finally, even the date of the year had become uncertain."

2012-10-12 11:53:20 AM
OK, this looks bad, and because it's Florida (realistically, it could have come from any state in the south), it probably does have a racist rationale.

OTOH, it reflects reality. Expecting them to get every student demographic up to the same high level in 6 years is unreasonable. It isn't gonna happen. Esp. if they don't give the schools more money to do it (which I assume they won't).

Teachers and schools should just make clear what everybody (including parents) already know: getting all students up to the same "level" at the same time with the money and time they have to work with isn't going to happen. They can watch all the inspirational movies and TV shows they want, but it won't make any difference. They'll just keep moving the target dates up (ie, later) and never reaching "proficiency," because they'll have a whole new group of non-proficient students being expected to make those targets. Meanwhile, the old groups of students have either dropped out or barely graduated, no longer a problem for the schools.

2012-10-12 11:54:06 AM
These are goals for educators to meet, not students. It says nothing about what students are expected to achieve. In fact, it implies that students are expected to pass the same tests.
Private enterprises don't set goals for their employees by disregarding the demographics of their operations, and that isn't racist. Why is it racist if school districts do the same thing?

To think when I was growing up in South Florida everyone kept accusing us of being filled with "Progressives". I'm fairly certain this is regressing us a half century or so.

Does this mean they'll be pushing to bring back voting eligibility tests, too, soon?

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism... a hyphenated American is not an American at all. This is just as true of the man who puts "native" before the hyphen as of the man who puts German or Irish or English or French before the hyphen. Americanism is a matter of the spirit and of the soul. Our allegiance must be purely to the United States. We must unsparingly condemn any man who holds any other allegiance. But if he is heartily and singly loyal to this Republic, then no matter where he was born, he is just as good an American as any one else.
The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic. The men who do not become Americans and nothing else are hyphenated Americans; and there ought to be no room for them in this country. The man who calls himself an American citizen and who yet shows by his actions that he is primarily the citizen of a foreign land, plays a thoroughly mischievous part in the life of our body politic. He has no place here; and the sooner he returns to the land to which he feels his real heart-allegiance, the better it will be for every good American. There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.
For an American citizen to vote as a German-American, an Irish-American, or an English-American, is to be a traitor to American institutions; and those hyphenated Americans who terrorize American politicians by threats of the foreign vote are engaged in treason to the American Republic.[1]

"It's setting us back into times we have fought so hard to come away from," Jackson said. "It's a slap in the face to the African American community and the Hispanic community."
Added Jackson, "It sets us back a hundred years to when the expectations for a person were based on the color of your skin."

Hmmm. Why then, do we have to have dual language signs all over the place? Spanish and English, started back in the 70's.

Who was it that came up with 'Ebonics' again? Isn't there a company called FUBU (For Us By Us)? When did convenience stores start being called 'Bodega's? Don't most US grocery stores now carry separate sections of Hispanic foods?

If you check on Educational Grants, you'll find the majority are designated for one race.

Who got all bent out of shape when singers of another race chose to become 'Rappers' and claimed they were stealing 'THEIR music'?

Explain to me why cities across the US, starting back in the 60's, had to develop 'housing projects' targeting primarily one race?

Been to Miami, Fla, lately? If you want to live and do business there, you MUST speak Spanish. Seems half of Cuba lives there. You also need to know their 'code of honor' for the guys.

What race fought for decades to become equal and, upon achieving it, promptly worked hard at separating itself from other races by developing a whole different way of speaking, dressing, naming themselves and demanded to be recognized for their 'culture'?

What race sues over the slightest thing that might be considered discriminatory -- such as banning cartoon characters made back in the 20's and ignoring the fact that the creators lampooned their OWN race much more than any other? They also banned the works of famous actors of their race who performed in hilarious race oriented films and became famous? (Amos and Andy sound familiar? How about the Kingfish? Then, 'Song of the South'.)

Yet equality is demanded.

Separate but equal is pretty much a fact.

Just like 'ghetto fabulous'.

Solution for education: one level for all. Drop the No Child Left Behind krap. Stop f**king with the educational system, which has dropped it from one of the top 10 in the world to not even on the list.

This is of course an insane idea, but if instead they just added 18 points to the poor performing formerly legally opressed racial minorities scores so they then equal the great performing formerly legally opressed racial minorities scores all of liberal farkland would be cheering. And that, of course, is also insane.

2012-10-12 12:43:06 PM
So just like the federal No Child Left Behind reporting categories since their inception. I'm sorry, what's the issue here again? All subgroups are to reduce non-proficiency by 2017 from the baseline year of 2011. Each group has a different starting point, hence a different ending point. Farking simple division, how does it work?

Sorry for the rant, I'm ass deep in this very topic right now. Came here during my lunch break to chill, not expecting to be greeted by such stupidity.

2012-10-12 01:10:11 PM
It's typical to see the knee-jerk response of "racism!" but once again, people miss the bigger picture. Take race out of it for a moment. Suppose some company has 4 factories. Factory A is currently running at 72% efficiency, Factory B at 69%, Factory C at 53% and Factory D 38%. Now as CEO, you come in and want to raise efficiency standards. A good CEO won't demand that all factories be immediately brought up to 100% efficiency. That's an unrealistic goal and unrealistic goals seldom get met. Instead, the CEO looks at the current efficiency ratings and realities they all need to be brought up incrementally. So he decrees that Factory A increase it's efficiency to 90%, Factory B to 88%, C to 8%1 and D to 74%.

Why would anyone have a problem with that? Those are realistic goals to bring up the standards relative to their current efficiency. It's the same exact concept here. Some groups are scoring lower so it will take longer to get their number to 100%.

Well, if white students are at 69% already, obviously it's mathematically impossible to double that figure. And of course the higher the percentage performing at an acceptable level the harder it gets to make improvements. You've presumably reached most of the unmotivated kids or kids with trouble at home and are moving into tard territory, as extroverted suicide might say.

Please tell me you're a troll; otherwise I think I've slipped back into the 80's. I'm having difficulty believing that a person who is clearly articulate still has difficulty wrapping their mind around the concept that a group desiring that their cultural identity be given equal respect as the predominant culture somehow means that they are "asking for it" or encouraging racism. It's ludicrous to think that a person or group should be expected to assimilate into the surrounding culture just so they aren't seen as incompetent or incapable.

It's not as though our ancestors, and I'm not even talking about the whole Native American population insanity, just happily assimilated into the surrounding American culture when then came over, in boats, no less.

You know, god forbid we use this opportunity to expand the linguistic education of our children. But of course teaching change and learning more, another language that is commonly spoken by their peers, for example, would surely do them irreparable psychological damage or something. I don't think I'd be so quick to reject knowledge in the same rant that you criticize the educational system.
