Queen Anne is on a hill so probably not, but the Interbay area between QA and Magnolia yep definitely.

If Rainier goes, St Helens will look like a Peter Brady experiment by comparison.

In portland we have food carts which can quickly be deployed throughout the city when all the restaurants sink into the earth. Also fixed gear hipsters will be able to provide city wide delivery when the transportation goes tits up.

You know who won't be OK? All those towns out on the pacific coast. Most of the land out there is sandbar / ancient mudflats built up. The bridges will wash out, they'll be flooded over. I would not want to be on Ocean Shores (WA) or anywhere near there.

I thought that liquefaction was a well-known consequence of earthquakes. Hell, I only lived in California for three years (and left ten years ago), and I knew all about it. Why is anyone surprised by this?

Yes, it will. This is news? I used to work on the 2nd floor of a building in Richmond, BC and we just figured that after an earthquake we'd be on on the ground floor and could go out through a window.

I had liquid soil once. An entire day moving between the bed and the toilet with nothing but crackers and Gaterade to eat. That's the last time I try the chili!

So... It looks like a lot of hipsters are going to die. They moved to Portland to retire, now they can die soon too.

Sadly, the Pacific NW will be well and truly farked when the "BIG ONE" hits. There hasn't been a real quake/tsunami in so long that no one currently there thinks it's possible in their lifetimes.

I know, I grew up on the Oregon Coast. Pretty much the entire coastline will be decimated by either the ground shaking/turning to quicksand and/or the wall of water that will wash everything out to sea. Did I think about it much when I was there? No. It's depressing enough as it is without the constant threat of severe natural disaster.

Even though I live in Arizona now it's stories like these that make me think about my parents, relatives and good friends who all live either on the Coast or in the Willamette Valley.

So a quake would do irreparable damage to portland's underground? I'm not seeing a downside here.

How much was that earthquake rider? Last I checked it was almost $800 per year.

Mine runs about $500 a year with Met Life, but I also rolled my car and business insurances up with them.

Compared to the $400K it would take to replace the house, it's worth it.

We have liquid soil 10 months out of the year.
We panic when it stops raining long enough for it to get dry & hard!

I think there's less chance of something happening in NW China. Granted, there's nothing out there but some yak herders and a lot of windy, dusty desert. The "pole of isolation"

This is basically what happened in the Marina district during the Loma Prieta in '89, so yeah.
