I am starting to be swayed by The Bird, as long as the full force of Fark is behind the tongue-in-cheek message of The Bird as displayed in this URL, I'm all for it.

I guess we should shoot for before the election? Or keep it at 45 days? We could set it for 21 days, although I'm not sure how quickly we could get it to DC, or even if VP Biden would have time to accept it.

2012-10-12 01:11:26 PM
I'm not certain, but I think he could legally accept this as long as it's clear that it's not a reward for any political behavior, not intended to coerce Joe into performing any action, and is made with bona fide intent purely as a personal gift because we like him. It's difficult to prove that gifts are not intended to coerce, and certainly no one who donates could be affiliated with a PAC, government agency or public interest group, but I think a gift from a large group of people is more likely to be acceptable. And I'm in for $10.

Id say keep it 45 days..

Richie's working on the campaign site now. Not sure if the consensus is to get a domain or just use the indiegogo fundraising page as the site. Both could work, the latter is arguably a lot simpler.

I can post it as soon as we determine a name for the car. If everyone likes the pitch we just need that and to determine the length of the fundraising...

Yeah, that gives enough time to get the logistics sorted and arrange stuff. Plus it puts us past the election.

The domain would probably be better from a visibility standpoint. You could still use Indiegogo to do the actual fundraising.

Simple is best. Besides, lots of copycat websites could pop up around the address.

I'm loving this idea.

Would it be possible for us to go through Colbert SuperPac and get this protected as political speech? I'm sure the guys on Colbert's crew would love to do something like this, especially as Stephen has a real heart for charity.

Can you imagine: "Mr. Vice President, the citizens of the internet would like your blessing to donate this Trans-Am in your honor. They only ask that you pose with it holding an Icehouse Tallboy while shirtless."

As long as Colbert can somehow support it while spinning it against Joe (for the fake GOP punditry) or for Colbert himself, he'd do it, just because it's hilarious.

I have a horse in this race with "The Sinator". The Bird might not fly well in some parts of the country--maybe The Sinator wouldn't either.

Now if there was a Big Bird head on the front fenders by the door hinges, that might take away from the obscene gesture associated with The Bird.

Cyclometh: Suggestions for the pitch text:

Ladies and gentlemen of the Internet, Joe Biden is awesome. And frankly, it's a national disgrace that he doesn't have a sweet-ass ride to impress Congress, foreign dignitaries, and chicks with. We, the denizens of the Internet have decided to rectify this situation by giving Vice President Joe Biden a kickass Trans Am.

We're targeting $25,000 as the amount needed to find a 1979 to 1983 Trans Am in great condition, plus taxes, title, insurance and the necessary things to get it delivered to the Vice President in Washington, D.C.

Now, a serious note: We realize that the Vice President can't accept a gift like this. However, we expect that the action itself will be noteworthy and garner attention. After presenting the vehicle to the Vice President, we will sell it at auction and the proceeds will be donated to the following charities in equal measure. We sincerely hope that the attention this campaign gains will allow us to sell the vehicle for a better price than the fundraising target and get some great funds for some great charities, and have some fun along the way.

So, kick in a couple of bucks to buy Joe Biden a kickass ride, wontcha?

I like it.

Last Version of the Pitch:

Joe Biden loved his Trans Am. As soon as it reached about 40 degrees, in Scranton, PA. Ole Joe would pull the cover off of his beloved beauty and spend hours detailing her immaculate curves. He'd often be overheard murmuring how sweet his,"Bird" was, which was in complete opposite to his normally gruff demeanor. It also made certain Senate Foreign Relations Committee meetings very awkward.
Senator Biden, now Vice President Biden, was always known for his fiery and passionate speech and mannerisms. But when he looked at the Bird, he'd hitch up his jorts, rip off of his shirt sleeves and chug a sixer of Ice House. It was love.

Then came the Great Recession. Biden tried to maintain his Trans AM through 2009, but with the soaring gas prices and the Republican's pressure to destroy everything that was General Motors, he was unable to do so. He sold it to a young man about to go to war in Iraq. There were tears in his eyes when he gave the Bird away. But he knew she would be in a better place.

Unfortunately, not everything on the internet is true, no matter what the internet tries to tell you. Over the past four years one of the internet's favorite political meme's is of "Uncle Joe Biden." It started with an Onion article (http://www.theonion.com/articles/shirtless-biden-washes-trans-am-in-w hite-house-dri,2718/) which poked fun at the Vice President because of his blue collar mannerisms and forthright speech when discussing...well...anything.

Joe Biden has made a career about speaking what he means, regardless if it is in his best political interest or if it is the "politically correct" thing to say. Because of this he endures jokes regarding his "gaffes" and verbal miscues and America (and some of the rest of the world) laugh and chuckle about this homer Vice President of ours.

All the while, Joe Biden has calmly and quietly been an incredible Vice President. He was one of the first politicians to publicly embrace gay marriage (http://articles.latimes.com/2012/may/06/nation/la-na-biden-gay-marria ge-20120507) and may have been personally responsible for President Obama coming out in favor of gay marriage and the subsequent change in the Democratic Party's platform.

In order to let Vice President Biden know just how much we appreciate them, while also making a very silly part of the internet come true (we are the internet after all); let's buy Uncle Joe a Trans Am like one that is featured in the Onion article linked to above. It's hilarious, it's awesome and gosh darnit, it's something that we can talk about in addition to the cat pictures and rage comics.

Now, if for some reason this awesome gift is too awesome and cannot be given to Vice President Biden, the internet will still purchase the car and auction it off.

All proceeds will be distributed to the Biden Breast Health Initiative, Doctors Without Borders, the Wounded Warrior Project and GLAAD.

Regardless if it is to Joe Biden or to charity, maybe Joe Biden will even wash it on the White House lawn.
