He was probably apologizing in advance for killing himself in front of them. If he wakes up they can ask him why he wanted to end his life and what message was he sending by doing it in front of his peers.

PS Am I the only person in America that hates Pearl Jam? The only song that I've ever liked by them was Do the Evolution, and the radio never plays that one.

This may sound a little weird, but I like to think that if it ever gets bad enough... well, I don't have to shoot myself today. I can always do it tomorrow, should the situation not improve. That's why I've been alive for the past fifteen years. It may have been this kid's "tomorrow", but since it was staged I'd put my money on attention-seeking.

Radak: "Yep, all adds up."

That was my first thought.
Particularly given that the kid supposedly gave a little speech and shot himself in front of a classroom of his peers, but somehow no-one has reported what he said?
Not even in fragments or general topics covered?
That's just a *tad* suspicious.

Like just *maybe* the apology exposed the town (or at least prominent folk therein) as a nest of callous, bigoted assholes.

Since all you Pearl Jam people are here now, would someone please tell me what the fark does this mean?

Unsealed, on a porch a letter sat
Then you said, "I wanna leave it again"
Once I saw her on a beach of weathered sand
And on the sand I wanna leave her again

On a weekend I wanna wish it all away, yeah
And they called and I said that I'll go
And I said that I'll call out again
And the reason I ought ta leave her calm, I know
I said, "I don't know whether I'm the boxer or the bag"

Oh yeah, can you see them, out on the porch?
Yeah, but they don't wave
I see them 'round the front way, yeah
And I know, and I know I don't wanna stay

Make me cry

I see oh, I don't know why there's something else
I want to, wanna drum it all away
I said, "I don't, I don't know whether I was the boxer or the bag"

Oh yeah, can you see them, out the on porch?
Yeah, but they don't wave
I see them 'round the front way
And I know, and I know I don't want to stay at all
I don't want to stay
I don't want to stay
I don't want to stay
I don't, I don't want to stay

This.

I mean, would it kill radio to play Rearviewmirror or In Hiding or Present Tense or MFC or Footsteps or their cover of Crazy Mary or Nothingman or Last Exit or Off He Goes or Wash or Drifting or Brother or Light Years, perhaps their most underrated song, once in a while.

This and how about Unthought Known or The End?

I live in greater Philadelphia, so I am blessed that WMMR actually plays a FEW more songs than "Jeremy," "Black," and "Even Flow," but yeah, they really don't have much of a rotation considering Pearl Jam's back catalog is IMMENSE.

/Would love to hear MFC, Satan's Bed, Tremor Christ, Low Light, Smile, Down, or *my* personal favorite, Do The Evolution.

Vance underwent more than 140 hours of surgery and lived in constant pain. Three years later, he slipped into a coma and died before the trial began, but not before he gave his version of what happened the day he and Belknap made their suicide pact.

Seriously, did he try running away from home first? Suicide shouldn't have to be your first option.

According to Google Maps it's 11.5 miles from Fairmount Public School to the intersection of Interstate 29 and state route 11 (4th Ave. S in Fairmount). An able-bodied 14 year old can walk that in three hours. From there you can hitchhike north to Fargo, where there's an airport and Greyhound and Amtrak stations.

However, if finding help sounds more important than just getting away (which IMHO it should) Google also shows that Fargo also has a Village Family Service Center where trained counsellors address gay & lesbian issues (among many others) and talk to teenagers about whatever problems they have, gay-related or not. (I have no idea whether they'd talk to a 14 year old walking in off the street, but I just emailed them to ask about it.) And there might be better options in Fargo than the first thing I could find Googling for +gay +counselling +Fargo.

Such things are worth trying before deciding to shoot yourself in the head. If only there was a way for Farkers to make troubled teenagers in their area aware of these resources.

Anyway.

TFA says he was "coherent" afterward. I just hope he didn't fark himself up too badly. And that somebody in the hospital in Fargo will talk to him and try to help.

Well there were plenty of other reasons to hate on Pearl Jam than just that.

You should have weighed the legal ramifications of just pulling out a plastic gun one day in the middle of class. This was pre-9/11 so you may have been expelled and/or sent to juvie but there would be no Gitmo. You would have shut everyone the fark up and probably gottten some mad pussy at the end of it.

Actually, of people who survive a suicide attempt, only about 10 to 15 percent die by a later suicide attempt.

This article says it's 10 percent.

Also, I was reading an article about the Golden Gate Bridge suicide barrier a while back, and it said that of the people who jumped off the bridge and survived, many of them regretted the suicide attempt before they hit water. Obviously we can only speculate how many of the ones who died may have regretted it after it was too late. Can't remember offhand, but I'm sure you can find it yourself if you care.

I also have a friend who attempted suicide in high school and later said she was very glad the attempt failed. So, you'll understand if I don't agree with your sister, no matter how good her intentions are.

Heh - I was dating a woman named "Amy" when that song first came out.

About two months later, just hearing it would drive her into a rage - and if anyone at a party started singing it, we had to physically restrain her.

By the way, I just got an answer back from that The Village Family counseling place in Fargo: a counselor would have been allowed to see an actively suicidal minor, even if he walked in by himself without parental consent.

The problems would have been 1) finding out about that, and 2) getting to Fargo -- ~70 miles away via I-29 -- at age 14.

Dammit.

Always thought this about Junior High (Middle School). In my time, people were over themselves and doing their own thing in High School.

17 is the new 13

I think it depends on the high school. My High School didn't really have "cliques" and "jocks", etc. I think it was because it was a magnet trade school that took in kids from 5 separate districts, so it broke up any cliques that had been formed in like elementary school.

If there's a situation were you were with same group of kids since say kindergarten, which looks like the case here, you never had a chance to re-invent yourself or get away from that one sadistic bully.

Most of the people who reply to pretty much anything I say with 'PSYCHIC!@!111!!!' are self-proclaimed scientists who demand to know why I'm not omnipotent. These people usually also think I talk to ghosts. This is because when they start talking about psychics, they have no farking clue what they're talking about, and are pretty much the liberal version of that self-deluded Teabagger who claims he understands string theory better than the latest science because Bible.

Probably the worse offense is the only Radiohead song radio will play is 'Creep'. Starting with OK, Computer, Radiohead changed the sound of their music and became incredible. Defining Radiohead by Creep is like defining the Beatles by all their music prior to the Revolver album. It is just a disgrace.

ciberido: PhDemented: Not really... my sis works in the ER and tells me how scary often they get failed gunshot suicides. Some put the gun to their temple, and just blow out their frontal cortex, which doesn't kill them and leaves them brain damaged. Others put the gun in their mouth and shoot up, blowing their face off but not even hitting the brain.

She says a lot of docs/nurses really want to tell the people how to do it right, because they know there is a better than even odds they'll be back in a month after another failed attempt.

That's for total suicides. What of the subgroup that all ready blew off 2/3 of their face and face a life of suffering and pain. I totally get than the vast majority of suicides are permanent solutions to temporary problems, and I think everyone has someone close who has tried (though likely many don't realize it). Just that the prognosis of a gunshot to the head is a LOT different than the prognosis of a wrist cutter or ODer.

fluffy2097: Or are you going to go on a diatribe about how they should thank science?

How about a diatribe about how they should get up off their fat lazy asses and start fixing the bullying and hatred and bigotry and intolerance in their society? Or a diatribe about how they should start actually doing something positive for a change instead of waiting for God to do it for them?

In case it's not obvious, I am a regular attendee at a lutheran church. I serve on my church's council. And I'm sick to death of christians PRAYING for people but doing NOTHING to help them. So many people think the "saved by grace" doctrine absolves them of the need to perform good deeds so they stay comfy in their insular little world and "hope" and "pray" for all the poor souls who are affected by tragedy while they watch TV every Sunday night and go back to work the next day convinced that their duty to their fellow humans is done because, hey, they prayed for them.

Yeah, I know it's not very Christian of me to say it, but to Hell with those people. A heart for God should mean you feel personally compelled to actually help people and dedicate your life to ending suffering. Jesus called for helping the poor, sick, needy, and imprisoned, not persecuting teh ghey and/or sitting idly by in judgement and just shaking your head at all that's wrong with the world. Is Pontius Pilate's example of washing his hands not poignant enough? It serves as an example of how so many Christians behave. We disapprove but we merely wash our hands of it, say our prayers, and somehow think that makes us right with God and our fellow man. Yeah, right.

If God's own people aren't going to do His will on this earth (hint: that means actually lifting their fingers to **do** something positive and work towards solutions to the problems that lead a teenager to put a bullet in his head, not just ask God to do it) then who on earth will?

And yes, I paint with a broad brush that covers me as well.

How about that kind of diatribe?

I learned something on Fark.com today.

Pretty funny to me since it's just about the only song I know the lyrics to.

Let's see

Attend church every Sunday - check
Teach Sunday school - check
Serve on council - check
Attend (and sometimes lead) Bible Studies - check
Coach church basketball team - check
Pray every day - check
Volunteer for frequent service projects for local and global community - check
Believe in Christ - well...umm...about that...*sigh* let's just say my most frequent and favorite personal prayer is "Lord, I believe. Help my unbelief." (see Mark 9:24) and one of my favorite songs is Doubting Thomas by Nicklecreek because well, I think...logically...there's no reason to believe in the divinity of Christ or most of the Bible for that matter. (Which is a difficult thing to come to grips with, btw.)

So outwardly and in person, I am certainly a Christian. And in most ways I still *feel* Christian and identify as Christian. But my internal monologue that I sometimes let slip out in semi-anonymous internet forums...not so much.

You forgot the part where we have no idea why this happened.

Kids who are bullied don't usually kill themselves after apologizing to everyone.

He just wants the town to go on an anti bullying crusade because hey, that's the big thing now and the only possible reason for problems with today's youth.

It's an incredibly myopic viewpoint.

Perhaps we should figure out why this happened, and THEN start a crusade to prevent other children from going through the same suffering.

NAH! That requires actual thought. Better just parrot the big thing network news says is the cause of all problems these days.

Maybe bullying was the problem with this kid or maybe he was just mental. I don't know.

But I don't reflexively just want to go on an anti-bullying bender because OMG NEWS. What I want is for people to figure out a way to help and then do that instead of just asking God to fix it.

Maybe the best thing they could do is organize a fund raiser to pay for counseling for any of the students and staff of the school. Maybe the best thing is to go to their local school and offer to volunteer in some way that helps troubled students. Maybe the best thing is to talk to kids in their local church about the issues they face every day and what might make a kid commit suicide. Maybe get training and volunteer to work on a suicide prevention hotline. I don't know. What I do know is that just saying a prayer and then hoping God takes care of it from there is selfish and useless.

I remember something like this happening in Sheridan Arkansas, back in the late 80's or so... Some kid got up to talk to the class, confessed his love to some girl sitting in class, then pulled out a gun and killed himself... No "attempt" here...

Then, within a week or 2, there were about 8-10 more suicides... Several were unrelated (like the elderly couple that ran their car in their garage until they went to sleep due to the fumes), but it made me think, at the time, that this was how Armageddon started, people killing themselves in the town where the anti-christ was born...

And no, I wish I was joking... My cousins went to the school, and knew the kid who did it...

So you want people to fix problems they don't know about. Got it.

Look. You don't know much about bullying or depression. That much is apparent. That doesn't give you an excuse to take a giant shiat on the mayor for expressing his farking condolences that this happened. You have packaged your giant turd in a thin wrapping paper of "Don't pray, do." but really it's just a way to place yourself above all those other heathens, isn't it? Deep in your heart, you know the mayor had to make a statement, but you want to make him look like a bad person, because you think it makes you look like the holier person.

"Look at me! I'm not praying! I'm doing! I'm so much holier then you!"
