Zeb Hesselgresser: Fabric_Man: Am I the only person who thinks the entire concept of a high school is a bad idea? Do we really want to gather that many mentally-unstable people in a single building?Always thought this about Junior High (Middle School). In my time, people were over themselves and doing their own thing in High School.17 is the new 13
Mirrorz: PsiChick: /Let me guess, you think you're a scientist too, don't you?I have no idea what you are talking about. I just remember you getting reamed in a TF discussion a couple years ago for going on about your psychic abilities. Apparently your genius still knows no bounds.
The One True TheDavid: By the way, I just got an answer back from that The Village Family counseling place in Fargo: a counselor would have been allowed to see an actively suicidal minor, even if he walked in by himself without parental consent. The problems would have been 1) finding out about that, and 2) getting to Fargo -- ~70 miles away via I-29 -- at age 14.Dammit.
StoPPeRmobile: Nick Nostril: SlothB77: Most overrated PJ song. There are probably 125 pearl jam songs i prefer over Jeremy, yet all radio plays is Jeremy.This.They play that one Alice in Chains, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Nirvana songs.
ciberido: PhDemented: Not really... my sis works in the ER and tells me how scary often they get failed gunshot suicides. Some put the gun to their temple, and just blow out their frontal cortex, which doesn't kill them and leaves them brain damaged. Others put the gun in their mouth and shoot up, blowing their face off but not even hitting the brain. She says a lot of docs/nurses really want to tell the people how to do it right, because they know there is a better than even odds they'll be back in a month after another failed attempt.Actually, of people who survive a suicide attempt, only about 10 to 15 percent die by a later suicide attempt. This article says it's 10 percent. Also, I was reading an article about the Golden Gate Bridge suicide barrier a while back, and it said that of the people who jumped off the bridge and survived, many of them regretted the suicide attempt before they hit water. Obviously we can only speculate how many of the ones who died may have regretted it after it was too late. Can't remember offhand, but I'm sure you can find it yourself if you care.I also have a friend who attempted suicide in high school and later said she was very glad the attempt failed. So, you'll understand if I don't agree with your sister, no matter how good her intentions are.
fluffy2097: Or are you going to go on a diatribe about how they should thank science?
The Wizard of Frobozz: How about that kind of diatribe?
ciberido: Mirrorz: As a 12year old named Jeremy when that song came out, I f*cking hated Pearl Jam for the following years of ridicule."Hey, Did you speak in class today?"Real original motherf*cker.I have a friend named Cecilia who hates Simon & Garfunkel for basically the same reason.
PsiChick: Mirrorz: PsiChick: /Let me guess, you think you're a scientist too, don't you?I have no idea what you are talking about. I just remember you getting reamed in a TF discussion a couple years ago for going on about your psychic abilities. Apparently your genius still knows no bounds. Most of the people who reply to pretty much anything I say with 'PSYCHIC!@!111!!!' are self-proclaimed scientists who demand to know why I'm not omnipotent. These people usually also think I talk to ghosts. This is because when they start talking about psychics, they have no farking clue what they're talking about, and are pretty much the liberal version of that self-deluded Teabagger who claims he understands string theory better than the latest science because Bible./It gets old after the first ten times. I'd imagine you can tell. :p
The Wizard of Frobozz: fluffy2097: Or are you going to go on a diatribe about how they should thank science? How about a diatribe about how they should get up off their fat lazy asses and start fixing the bullying and hatred and bigotry and intolerance in their society? Or a diatribe about how they should start actually doing something positive for a change instead of waiting for God to do it for them?In case it's not obvious, I am a regular attendee at a lutheran church. I serve on my church's council. And I'm sick to death of christians PRAYING for people but doing NOTHING to help them. So many people think the "saved by grace" doctrine absolves them of the need to perform good deeds so they stay comfy in their insular little world and "hope" and "pray" for all the poor souls who are affected by tragedy while they watch TV every Sunday night and go back to work the next day convinced that their duty to their fellow humans is done because, hey, they prayed for them.Yeah, I know it's not very Christian of me to say it, but to Hell with those people. A heart for God should mean you feel personally compelled to actually help people and dedicate your life to ending suffering. Jesus called for helping the poor, sick, needy, and imprisoned, not persecuting teh ghey and/or sitting idly by in judgement and just shaking your head at all that's wrong with the world. Is Pontius Pilate's example of washing his hands not poignant enough? It serves as an example of how so many Christians behave. We disapprove but we merely wash our hands of it, say our prayers, and somehow think that makes us right with God and our fellow man. Yeah, right. If God's own people aren't going to do His will on this earth (hint: that means actually lifting their fingers to **do** something positive and work towards solutions to the problems that lead a teenager to put a bullet in his head, not just ask God to do it) then who on earth will? And yes, I paint with a broad brush that covers me as well. How about that kind of diatribe?
lennavan: calbert: reminds me of that Pearl Jam songYeah I thought that too and googled the song to find out what the actual lyrics were. I would have sworn they were something like "Jeremy spoke and yaeraseryasdfadaaayyyyy." I didn't even know those were the actual lyrics until just now.I learned something on Fark.com today.
Sgt.Zim: Wait, are you sure you're Christian? That was way too reasoned and logical for most Christians to have written.
clarksvegas: Fabric_Man: Am I the only person who thinks the entire concept of a high school is a bad idea? Do we really want to gather that many mentally-unstable people in a single building?Try the inside of a government building.../warning: contains nuts//been there, done that, they said I was too crazy to stay
fluffy2097: He just wants the town to go on an anti bullying crusade
Radak: Hmm, let's see...[ ✔ ] Small, insular town in North Dakota.[ ✔ ] National coming out day.[ ✔ ] Apology for somethingnothing.[ ✔ ] Suicide attempt.Yep, all adds up.
ciberido: Mirrorz: ciberido: I have a friend named Cecilia who hates Simon & Garfunkel for basically the same reason. My mother-in-law's name is Lola. L-O-L-A Lola. La la la lola. She's actually a woman though. Obviously...Conversely, I have a friend named Amy who loves the Pure Prairie League song./The song is actually named "Amie" if that matters
Alonjar: I have zero sympathy for someone who shoots themselves and fails to actually die.You even farked up being a farkup. What a fark up.
Alonjar: I have zero sympathy for someone who shoots themselves and fails to actually die.
Arcturus72: I remember something like this happening in Sheridan Arkansas, back in the late 80's or so... Some kid got up to talk to the class, confessed his love to some girl sitting in class, then pulled out a gun and killed himself... No "attempt" here...Then, within a week or 2, there were about 8-10 more suicides... Several were unrelated (like the elderly couple that ran their car in their garage until they went to sleep due to the fumes), but it made me think, at the time, that this was how Armageddon started, people killing themselves in the town where the anti-christ was born...And no, I wish I was joking... My cousins went to the school, and knew the kid who did it...
The Wizard of Frobozz: What I want is for people to figure out a way to help and then do that instead of just asking God to fix it.
