THIS!

Subby nailed it.

She looks like Mare Winingham.

She was incredible.

2012-10-12 08:44:27 AM
Yeah, going into it, I hadn't really heard of her before.
I thought, 'great, they're putting up some unknown back bencher who's gonna be a door mat.'

But not only did she know her shiat, she asked hood questions, she followed up on questions, kept things moving.
She was much better than Jim Leher.

Like any refereed sports series, if the refs blow it in game 1, there's a lot more pressure on the refs to get it right in game 2.

In all fairness Jim Leher was screwed over by the format. Should be interesting to see how it goes with the last debate which will be same format as the first but obviously a different host.

I'm getting a fair amount of right wing butthurt on Facebook this morning about how she did a really bad job. Perhaps she shouldn't have let Biden get away with so much truthiness.

2012-10-12 09:09:25 AM
Many on the right say she was on Biden's side, and that's not true. She tried to pin down Biden with the quick questions, but Biden actually answered them. Ryan stopped, looked at her, and stammered out something silly, doubling down on his previous statement without actually answering her questions.

THAT'S why the right is angry. She wasn't on Biden's side, Biden just answered her questions because he had answers, and Ryan did not.

2012-10-12 09:17:23 AM
I could have done without the Catholic and the "what do you bring as a man" questions, but I liked her and I liked the format.

But I said to myself last night, when even she wasn't buying Ryan's BS about deductions, that the right wing noise machine would be turned up to 11 today.

2012-10-12 09:31:29 AM
I like that she kept pressing for details on Ryan's alleged plans, but wish she would have asserted more control when they talked over her. (Yes, both of them did this.)

2012-10-12 10:05:47 AM
When the major complaint about a moderator is that her follow up questions were too tough, you know she did a great job.

Wasn't the VP debate the same format as the first debate, only sitting down? Jim Leher was screwed by incompetence. "How are you different?" is not a valid question, and certainly not valid when you ask it five times in one debate. It wouldn't have killed you to ask a follow-up either.

I had to work, I couldn't watch it, but my wife said Ryan's major problem was that he never gave any specifics, and always tried to deflect with a story.

I thought she was awful. She talked way too much to be a successful moderator.

And the way she kept interrupting the candidates -- simply unacceptable.

2012-10-12 10:22:47 AM
The format is also much more conductive to a well moderated debate. When the candidates are sitting a few feet from you and on the same level it is easier to interrupt and cut them off than when they are on stage behind a podium and you're off screen. Still, Leher was terrible and shouldn't get to moderate them again.

The Great EZE: Wasn't the VP debate the same format as the first debate, only sitting down?

There was a hard time limit on each topic. The first debate didn't have that, though a strong moderator could have enforced an unofficial one.

i remember faces like this in law school. they were inevitably the guy in class who made a comment or question, and you just sat there like, holy shiat, people actually believe that?

/ law school has a lot of those people... they all seem to have the same face.

She did a good job giving Ryan a hard time, but didn't stick to the same standards with Biden. Still, far better than anyone else who's sat in that seat in quite a while.

2012-10-12 10:27:30 AM
Weren't all of the questions pre-approved in the first debate? My understanding is that was the first debate to allow that. It allowed Romneybot to prepare extensively and not have to think on his feet. He was able to give canned answers. I understand that the final debate will be a town hall format for at least a portion of the debate. This will favor Obama.

Simulated as your friends posted it about how dreamy he is? Or that your friends that have Limbaugh et al. liked had them posted as your friend about how this is vice presidential?

She was pretty good. She did let Biden steamroll her once or twice, but for the most part she kept them honest to the extent any moderator could be expected to. Granted, if the debater flat out repeatedly refuses to answer a question *cough*Ryan*cough* there's only so much that can be done, beyond simply making it clear that they were indeed dodging.

The next debate is the townhall one. The final debate is the same format as the first with a focus on foreign policy.

Exactly

//Also, I didn't catch what Biden said the first time, but Joe laughs a bit about Ryan's bipartisianship, and then says "It would be a first for this Republican Congress".

I want to bribe someone at the next "town hall" style debate to ask Romney:"You're in a desert walking along in the sand when all of the sudden you look down, and you see a tortoise, crawling toward you. You reach down, you flip the tortoise over on its back. The tortoise lays on its back, its belly baking in the hot sun, beating its legs trying to turn itself over, but it can't, not without your help. But you're not helping. Why is that?"

I can't imagine what the difference was in the debate. Moderators do their job properly when they help out the Democrat apparently.

from the linked article: the CPD recommends that the candidates be seated at a table with the moderator. seems the first debate failed on that recommendation. or the two parties decided not to play ball. IMO they might have since the podiums look more "presidential".

It seems to change pretty often. I remember Edwards and Cheney were seated in 2004, but Biden and Palin were standing in 2008. Maybe there are special considerations for health?

Yeah. There was a point toward the beginning where Ryan was asked about creating jobs or taxes or something, I don't remember specifically (I was drunk, sue me), and he stammered a few pithy words and took a quick right turn into WTFville and started telling a story about some family whose kid died in a car crash. It was completely out of left field and apropos of nothing and it came off clumsy, like he was fresh meat on a high school debate team trying out a tactic he'd read about.d

I like the contrast in style between Biden and Ryan. Ryan's weaselly and evasive. Biden is straightforward. I wonder if Ryan actually believes in his platform... or conversely, if he believes in it but realizes it's unpalatable for civilized society.
