I forget where the Constitution says the Canadians are bound by that.

And, for what it's worth, maybe he should turn that faux righteousness on the travesty that is our "no fly list."

I'm sure The Sun sympathized with this d-bag. Canada is swinging hard right and not the friendly Canucker kind of right... the ultra derpy hateful kind.

The feds announced recently they were cutting off all funding for non Christian prison chaplains. The chick who is supposed to be overseeing women's issues voted to re-open the debate on when life begins. A new mosque in PEI has been getting threats. Our prison industrial complex is kicking into high gear. The Conservative government is breaking, bending and rewriting election rules in their favor. Environmental laws are being eroded to benefit big oil. Etc, etc...

And the citizens are lapping it up. If you read the comments on certain newspaper websites and letters to the editor in print publications the blatant racism, cop fellating and attacks on the underprivileged would make a freeper blush.

It's getting scary in Canuckerland.

God kicks humans out of Eden for giving them a weakness to do whatever a snake tells them to do, drowns millions of people for not serving him enough, turns Lot's wife into salt for looking backwards causing his daughters to rape their father, tells Abraham to sacrifice his son born from his half sister and then says "Just kidding!", then let's his "chosen people" get enslaved. All in one book.

He only burns the Qur'an? Bit of a double standard.

There are... and they are bad. Whole towns living in third world squalor with no help in sight. Native women make up something like one percent of the population yet represent a third of the prison population which is a huge spike from only a decade ago and it's mostly due to the abuse, poverty, racism and addiction issues they face.

Reserves are very bad places especially for women.

Harper rose to power by uniting and gagging the right fringe. I genuinely respect him as a politician, though I disagree with many of his views. The problem is that his fringe is starting to unravel because they feel they're finally in a position to do things. He promised them power in exchange for silent support and now they want to unbox their issues and make changes while they have a majority.

Harper's goal has always been to subtly shift the midline of the country's left/right spectrum until his views are considered centrist, but he's willing to accomplish it over a multi-decade time frame.

I went there during the first Gulf War in the early 90s and there weren't problems.

Ill take that fight. How exactly do we treat our "natives" here? Keep in mind that we a 170 odd years removed from the trail of tears. Most tribes still get everything promised to them in their treaties. That includes the tribes that broke the treaty and sided with the South in the Civil War. Are some of the reservations pits? Yup. That is hardly the fault of the rest of America. Things have actually improved quite a bit for most tribes in the last 20 years as well. Casino, and natural resources money has been on the increase considerably.

Having said that. Let Terry Jones fly into your country on a private jet and then accidentally shoot him down or something. Our faux outrage will be shortlived.

Same applies when entering the U.S.. If you have a criminal record, even for trivial crap, there's a good chance you'll be turned away.

Sapp told the Detroit News the arrests were supposed to have been stricken from their record.

Sadly I kind of agree with them but you NEVER give the Conservatives a majority. The Liberals sorely needed the spanking they got and I still am not convinced they learned their lesson. The NDP express the the types of social views Canada stands for but they spend money like drunken sailors and will tank us economically. The last election I wanted to see the Cons just BARELY get the PMs office and the NDP as a strong opposition... however I never thought in a million years they'd be as successful as they were so up until that night I was backing the Libs.

Cons with a majority is a real problem and the worse part is Harper and co. are so slick no one will realize the damage being done until it's FAR too late. At least with Cons of yore you knew you were getting ass reamed and the voters booted them out rather promptly.

luthia: Glenford: plushpuppy: we don't have freedom of speech in Canada or freedom of the press

Ahem.

FUNDAMENTAL FREEDOMS.
2. Everyone has the following fundamental freedoms:

(a) freedom of conscience and religion;
(b) freedom of thought, belief, opinion and expression, including freedom of the press and other media of communication;
(c) freedom of peaceful assembly; and
(d) freedom of association.

God all you people do is yell about rights and freedoms, give it a rest.

I had the good fortune to see some of Mits nomination or whatever while I was in the Orlando airport. I had just gotten off a 3 month hitch at sea, and was wanting for home. I was looking at everyone glued to the televisions, some nodding and some shaking their heads.

All I could think was, even Harper wouldn't be caught dead saying things like this on national television. He would be laughed out of the country.

WTF are you on about? Plushpuppy said Canada didn't have freedom of speech or the press in Canada. I was correcting him.

Resolute: Wait, this moron is going to "consider legal options"? Uhh, yeah, that'll go over well. Sovereign nations have the right to deny entry to non-citizens. But at least he and Fred Phelps can cry in their beers together over how Canada doesn't like to let bigots into her territory to preach hatred.

Yeah, I'm waiting to see just HOW much the "considering of legal options" is going to go over like a lead zeppelin (and NOT the awesome one with Robert Plant and Jimmy Page, either). :D

For starters, it seems that Terry Jones is blissfully unaware that (as The Onion so thoughtfully put it) Canada Is its Own Nation With Its Own Laws. Its equivalent of the Constitution--the Charter of Rights and Freedoms--explicitly states it can restrict the freedom of speech in cases where it's likely to cause massive public disorder (like, oh, Terry Jones' stunts have done in past).

In addition, Canada can refuse entry to people with convictions in their records, and can also refuse admittance if you're found to be a major promoter of hate speech--Terry Jones' church is actually listed as a hate group by the SPLC, which Canada can use to deny admittance (and there is court precedent for not only denying hatemongers entry but expelling them from the country).

I think Terry Jones is about to discover just how much Canada is its own nation and that going to a US court is likely to be ineffective (we know Canada isn't going to let him in, and good on them for that).

If Canada won't let you in, pretty much (just like in the US) the only avenue of appeal would be writing to Canada's equivalent of BICE (Citizenship and Immigration Canada) and attempting to have a document filed asking Canada to basically allow him to be admitted despite the arrests (which is a PITA to get); as it is, he's actually quite unlikely to get it, seeing as he has a history of promoting hate speech against MANY protected groups in Canada (not just minority religions, but hilarity WILL ensue when he finds out LGBT people are a protected class under the Charter of Rights and Freedoms--to the point that the Canadian equivalent of the Supreme Court ruled that provinces cannot legally bar gay marriage (yes, they've had their equivalent of Loving vs Virginia with same-sex marriage) and thus directing a lot of "gay honeymoon" tourism traffic towards Toronto and the Niagara region).

I would not be shocked if CIC ends up giving ol' Terry a Biden-esque smackdown, in fact :D

AliceBToklasLives: denied entry because they had a 2011 arrest record

Yep - Canada's been known to deny entry to folks with DIU records.

CSB time - During my early 20's, some friends and I decided to go to Windsor. We got randomly checked at the tunnel and for some reason 1 of my idiot friends thought he could hide some weed in his socks. They obviously found it and for that we had to strip and grab our ankles. Anyway, the point of the story is this - I had an open bottle of some tequila mixture and as we were set to leave, the cop said we could either dump it out and continue on into Windsor or keep it and head back to the MI. I asked if we could each take a shot and still go in. She agreed. The driver got to take some down as well. This was obviously before drinking and driving killed at a 100% success rate.

I was denied entry into Canada because they found some loose assault rifle rounds under the seat of my truck. They also got pissed when I demanded my rounds back, which they gave me in a border patrol evidence bag. I hate you Canada, go die in a fire.

There are a lot of people I disagree with and still respect their opinion. I'm not the one who shut down the discussion with glib statements that had no substance. I consider myself a fiscal conservative and a social liberal (notice no capitalization as the parties who bear those monikers don't necessarily represent the true spirit of those words). What burns me up is for some retarded reason we can't have politicians who embrace both ideals and the people who back the ones we do have are turning more and more to the US way of turning national policy into a bloodsport.

A pox on you! Phelps and his clan, being a warren of skilled lawyers, have a deep understanding of the law, its protections and limitations. The problem is with a majority he can slip in all the really nasty stuff like the oppressive crime bill, wipe out environmental protections, sell off our natural resources to foreign interests (why the hell he thinks that's a good idea is beyond me... it makes more economic sense to let Canadian firms handle that stuff), fill the CRTC with representatives from the media mega moguls, purchase overprice and outdated military hardware from the US and elsewhere, let the fringe members of his party stick their foot in the door on the abortion debate, push agendas that harm minorities and the poor, blah blah blah...

This is all sh*t that's currently going on. He is extremely good at making the public not notice these things and yes he did help prevent the worst of the worst from happening when the world economy tanked. However the biggest reason we did so well is because of banking regulations that were in place well before he took office and the strength of Canadian banks in general. He probably wants to scrap all that stuff too but knows the economy is the main thing keeping his party in the public's favor.

Anyway... enough ranting. I just wish we could have a party or multiple parties who embody Canadian values and compassion, maintain our global reputation AND keep a close eye on the purse strings. Sadly that seems to be becoming less and less likely.

Farking Canuck: here to help: Handsome B. Wonderful: What the hell are you talking about?

I'm saying if he keeps up the heavy handed bullsh*t he'll get voted out. I don't think I was being cryptic with that statement.

Huh ... I was under the impression that Harper has done pretty well during these worldwide tough times. I'm not a fan of his but I really haven't heard of any real rage against the Conservative party in years.

Add to this the implosion of the Liberals and the fact that the NDP, Green or any of the other parties are not really candidates to ever get elected into office, it seems to me Harper's party is in pretty good shape.

Sure there are a few years to go. The Liberals are rebuilding and could gain momentum. And, of course, Harper and Co. could make some big mistakes and change everything. But if there was an election tomorrow I think it would be a cake walk for Harper.

Then they turned the truck inside out looking for the rifle and they couldn't find it so they sent me back to the US border station with a letter that said "Permission to Leave Canada". They also got pissed when I demanded my rounds back, which they gave me in a border patrol evidence bag. I hate you Canada, go die in a fire.

Ammunition has to be transported in a secure container separate from the weapon (which also needs to be secured).

I think the issue was that it wasn't declared. Secondly the type of ammo may have been outright prohibited.

randomjsa: I'm just curious.

This guy is Anti-Muslim, so when people either here or around the world act as bad or worse than him, why are they not Anti-Christian, or Anti-Jewish? Why if I may be so bold as to ask a question I know the answer to... Is what he does so wrong and what any dozen or more people I can think of off the top of their head seemingly fine and not worthy of outrage?

The equation is much different. Crazy people are factored in. They riot over any perceived slight. Someone like Terry thousands of miles from them talks hard and stokes fires others have to put out and some end up losing their lives in the process. That includes Canadian and US troops.

luthia: Glenford: plushpuppy: we don't have freedom of speech in Canada or freedom of the press

Ahem.

FUNDAMENTAL FREEDOMS.
2. Everyone has the following fundamental freedoms:

(a) freedom of conscience and religion;
(b) freedom of thought, belief, opinion and expression, including freedom of the press and other media of communication;

Section 1 of the Charter, the so-called limitations clause, establishes that the guarantee of freedom of expression and other rights under the Charter are not absolute and can be limited under certain situations:

The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms guarantees the rights and freedoms set out in it subject only to such reasonable limits prescribed by law as can be demonstrably justified in a free and democratic society. (emphasis added)

This section is double-edged. First it implies that a limitation on freedom of speech prescribed in law can be permitted, if it can be justified as being a reasonable limit in a free and democratic society. Conversely, it implies that a restriction can be invalidated, if it cannot be shown to be a reasonable limit in a free and democratic society
Canada has had a string of high-profile court cases in which writers and publishers have been prosecuted for their writings, in both magazines and web postings.

/We do have freedom of the press but it doesn't work the same way as the USA. One cannot write hate literature and we have had publication bans in newspapers(last one I remember was the Bernardo trial).

The current theory is they had a meeting and decided on frontal lobotomies for everyone. It's just a guess at this point though.

Oh, don't be so sure of all that. Here in oklahoma, we are still trying to break treaties, over water concerns, tobacco issues, what they can do with land that is suppose to be native land. Hell, the fact that native services to abused women are not even close to funded made national news when the anti-abuse for women law became a partisain issue. Imminate domain still can and does take land away from natives, except instead of kicking out grandma, they reclaim native business for the porpose of "improving" the area. So, not really on the "we don't do that anymore"

Diogenes: "This is a real blow to freedom of speech," said Jones...

I forget where the Constitution says the Canadians are bound by that.

I forget where "crossing the border" became the same as "speech"

although Americans do have some interesting definitions of speech, ie campaign donations.

2012-10-12 07:54:23 PM
You know, I'm surprised that nobody appears to have brought this up yet (that I spotted, anyway.) Terry Jones wasn't turned away over free speech issues. He has a recent conviction (meaning more recently than seven years, although I can't remember which side of the border cares about that, maybe both.) That's all it takes. One conviction. This is also true of US Customs. A Canadian with a conviction will be turned back.

/ I commuted to a US college campus for a year and a half a while back. You're statement "pro-illegal immegration" sums it up. It should be illegal for millionares to use tax loopholes. It should be illegal to buy a gun. But the term "illegal" for a border jumping piece of trash should not be treated as illegal. I say mine the southern border. Any lucky law breakin' future social security receiving illegal, that never paid a dime into it including those infested with anchor babies, that makes it through the gauntlet can have amnesty. But they aren't illegal immigrants, just wayward undocumented workers.

Those folks who complain that it's hard to get in to Canada should try doing the reverse. Ever since 9/11, the border crossing people I've encountered seem to be under the delusion that every single one of them is Jack Bauer and everyone with a beard is a Muslim Terrorist Suicide Bomber. They actually shook my antique fiddle to see if anything was hidden inside. Then the questions about "Why did you leave the military just before 9/11?" Well, duh, it was because I thought I could do way more damage to the Western Imperialist Forces as a civvie without access to military bases than by staying in the service, you morons.
