Remember how great the music was in The Untouchables?
Gangsters != 'gangsta'

I knew this was an Untouchables rip-off as soon as I heard Gosling say, "Well, you gotta die of something."

Nick Nolte, Sean Penn...the only thing that would make this movie less intelligible would be if Bob Dylan did the soundtrack.

According to John Hodgman, Nick Nolte is the reincarnation of Quetzalcoatl, and he will come into his power as we approach Ragnarok in December.

Gangster Squad? The TSR prohibition era table-top RPG?

Just finished reading the book. An excellent read, gripping story of post-WW2 LA and the rough justice of how the LAPD went after Mickey Cohen (with a great subplot of a grifter family).

I hope the film doesn't futz it up too much.

Give this one a try. I'm not even sure what it is, it seems to far beyond 'Oscar bait.'

That's because you suck at life, Subby.

But seriously, who cares about Nick Nolte? Emma Stone! EMMA STOOOOOONE!

Don't get me wrong, I think both Penn and Nolte are great actors (and Dylan writes outstanding songs, for that matter), but I honest-to-god need subtitles to watch them because they mumble so badly.

That movie looks like it could be really great or really awful, btw. No middle ground. The premise seems trite, and at first glance so does his character, you can't really tell what it will be like from the trailer though. I'll probably see it when it comes out on DVD...again, so I can turn on the closed captioning.

Trailer looks good, I'll definitely see the flick, but... WTF is that crap-tastic Jay-Z track doing in the soundtrack?

Thanks,

i love Nolte...(thought he was robbed for the Oscar for 'The Warrior', and its also great to see Sean Penn play a guy once again who isn't all dowdy and sad.

Yeah, this role as middle aged Jewish Mickey Cohen seems to fit him perfectly. I would never have thought that of Spicoli.

He was really good in Mother Night, an underrated movie by a long shot
(though it did lack most of Vonnegut's dark humor which was a blow)

It's not hard to understand subby but it is at a fairly low frequency for a voice. Perhaps if you listened on a device with a real loudspeaker instead of a mobile you'd have less trouble. (I imagine the bass response is pretty weak on most phones.)

I don't understand how Ryan Gosling gets work. Every role he plays, it's like he read the script as his character being a creep with vague mental defections.

I'll check it out... Never even heard of it, though i did see Breakfast of Champions and liked that one (not so much upon repeated viewings, however).
