big bags of money

Theres not enough money to stay in Detroit, the metro Detroit area, hell the state of Michigan.........

Miserable place from September-March, gloomy and depressing.

Even in the summer the only worthwhile place is Western Michigan. Eastern Michigan has Detroit and assholes year round. That's never going to change.

The writer of that article is a moron. Back in the 1930's, the two league winners met in the World Series. There was no LCS.

steamingpile: The biggest problem I have with the state is how nasty it is in the winter, some places people call a winter wonderland but the places I were just made the entire state look filthy and disgusting.

The thing with winter is that it's best when it's not half-assed. Southern parts of MI that get the dirty, slushy light snow are ugly in the winter. Go north of Cadillac, hell, north of the Mighty Mac bridge, and you'll see winter how's supposed to look. Granted, you have to prepare for it; dress well, have a plow or snow blower (or know someone who does), and enjoy winter sports. Of course hockey is huge up here, but there are also great ski areas (as far as the Midwest goes). It really is a beautiful season when it's not half-assed.

ChrisDe: Confirmed? No. But a boy can dream, can't he?

If you believe Celebuzz (and other sources), it's confirmed. Good for him. If Emily needs a shoulder to cry on, I'll provide it for her...she's cute (but no Kate Upton).

If, while reading about some future pitcher salary negotiations, I find myself with a giant boner, I will have you guys to thank for it.

I'm not sure that reads quite the way I want it to.

I have no idea either way, but those sources are all: "a family member read it in a tabloid and repeated it to another tabloid."

the San Jose A's fans in the SF Comical are complaining that Verlander got too many calls, and the A's guy didn't get the same strike calls (when he wasn't chucking it into the dirt).

Guys, please don't make the mistake of believing that Detroit is indicative of the entire state of Michigan. It's not. Much of the rest of Michigan is beautiful - summer through winter (the fall colors right now are glorious). And Ann Arbor and Birmingham frequently ranks in the top twenty of the most desirable places to live in the country.

Every state has it's shaitholes. Michigan, unfortunately, happens to harbor one of the most notorious ones in the country.

I visited bay city about two years ago. It was absolutely beautiful, but every resident told me how afraid they were of the area. But I agree with the sentiment of your statement. Even when I'm in Detroit (usually greek town) there is a cop on every other corner just standing there.

There's a lot of money in metro Detroit. Nearly every automotive company has major R&D centers in the area: GM, Ford, Chrysler, Nissan, Toyota, Volkswagen, Hyundai all employ a bazillion high paid engineers. It's got plenty of money. This past year, there were over 3 million tickets sold. Average them at $40 a piece, assume another $20 per person in net concessions and you're talking $180 million a year from the gate. They have the third highest TV ratings of any team in the league, averaging 168,000 viewers per regular season game. They're currently getting about $40 million a year from their local TV deal, plus their share of MLB TV money. They've got one of the highest payrolls in baseball, backed by a billionaire, and they make money.

September and October, Michigan is awesome. That's when the leaves are turning and the cider mills are going. It's November to March that it sucks. Of course, baseball runs from April to October, so you can live here when it's nice and then keep a house somewhere warm for the off-season.

steamingpile: thecpt: is a back loaded contract just a show of good faith by the player in negotiations? Why are they so common?

Most of the time, the player is trading money thats not guaranteed for the team guaranteeing money owed to them, I still find it funny that the Mets have to pay bobby bonillia a few million for a few decades.

Baseball contracts are 100% guaranteed.

My buddy from Grand Rapids calls it "the mugger mover".

That's always been my favorite.
