I've been to a lot of live shows by comedians and the best of them were: Lisa Lampanelli (where she did all-new unaired material - unheard of w/ today's comics), Paula Poundstone, Rita Rudner, Margaret Cho, and Louie Anderson.
In the middle were some British comics whose names escape me now, and the Redneck tour guys.
The worst was that baseball-hat guy from '30 Rock' - his shtick(sp?) sucked donkey balls.

/cue the 'all female comics are lousy' comments, from people who have -never- been to their live shows.
//time to grow up and quit making 'all people of this gender are ______' statements - they're never true.

Who buys these? Once you have heard a joke do you really need to hear it again, especially to the point that you feel compelled to own it so you can hear it whenever you want? Music I get buying but the allure of comedy albums always escaped me.

you must be tons of fun at parties.

I have a few Carlin records, a Steve Martin LP (the lesser known "Comedy Isn't Pretty"), Robin Williams "Reality what a concept!" (not all that funny, actually) and his "live at the Met 1985" (probably his best cd), a 2LP set of Woody Allen's early stand up (half of it is pretty good, what a very witty guy).

as for hearing them again,
I've listened to Steven Wright's "I Have a Pony" about 4 times, and it's STILL funny.

I am a lot of fun at parties because I don't rely on a bunch of overdone, hackney comedy routines to be witty or clever. I rely on rum and Guinness.

Patton Oswalt ends one of his albums with a hobo song that I thought was amazing. I couldn't decide if it was reality based or made up out of whole cloth. Anyway, it was a step above stand up.

Crewmannumber6: Tommy Johnagin

I opened for this guy a few weeks ago, he's hilarious and really impressive at crowd work which I wasn't expecting.

Doug Stanhope "Dead Beat Hero" and "Something to Take the Edge Off" are farking brilliant. Either one should be on there.

Lots of good names here.

Reiterating Mike Birbiglia - if you've only heard bits of "Sleepwalk With Me" you have no idea what a wonderful, twisting narrative the whole thing is.

'Modern' and 'Classic' should never be in the same sentence.

///define 'modern'

drewogatory: Considering you have to listen to a Firesign album 20 freaking times sometimes just to figure out what the hell is going on, they are somewhat exempt. I was referring more to stand -up than meta material like that.

Bozos is a conceptual album that deal with an administrator hacking into a computer net work and rebooting it in the early 70s.
Yeah.
You need time to figure that out.
Now re-inflate your shoes.

I have no idea how Mike Birbiglia doesn't get more attention.

"Hey, cracka, pass the Sun Chips!"
"Not until we get to the picnic, cracka!"

THIS. Comedy has even less replay value than tv episodes and mainstream movies, although there are idiots who will watch those over and over again as well. I'll never understand why one would watch something they have already seen over something they haven't unless they have worse short term memory than a 2 year old.

yeah, people who do something more than once are stupid. if i hear a song one time, i never listen to it again, no matter how much i like it. listening to it one time is enough to get all the enjoyment out of it that i possibly can. i've only seen my favorite movie once nine years ago, because watching it again would be a waste of my valuable time. why should i watch a movie i know i like, when i can watch an adam sandler movie i've never seen before instead? in fact, when i meet new people and make new friends, i visit them once and then never again. why would i bother to visit people i've seen before? i do everything once. doing something two times is pointless.

While I do understand the disdain for Cook, I can't for the life of me understand the love or Oswalt.
Also, no Dylan Moran!? The list is very American.
