whizbangthedirtfarmer: There's really only one thing to do: infect Superman with some unknown virus that essentially turns him into a rage-induced lunatic. A story arc like that can get at least 12 issues and make him interesting for a bit.

If he goes crazy will you still call him Superman?

This list fails for lack of vegetarian Superman.

Also, I don't know why I'd failed to see it before, but this article gave me a new perspective on the New 52. It's basically One More Day writ large: all the same changes for all the same reasons, but to an entire universe instead of one character.
