Real Women Drink Akvavit: spinach gunk: [i870.photobucket.com image 500x306]

I hate playing Scrabble with my cat. She always wins.

akimbotoo: Ok, funny story from the other night. Charlie was in the bathroom with me with the door slightly ajar. He walked over to the door to leave and Abby stuck her paw under the door to play with him. He backed up then peered out just as she reached in and booped him on the nose! He then stood up on his hind legs & pushed on the door and closed it with a click and then sauntered off like nothing had happened!

I have no idea what it is about cats and closed doors but strongly suspect it's a territory thing. "Why is part of my territory blocked off?!?" So the GoGo Beastie, who can open interior doors pretty easily if they are not locked, always unblocks her territory by opening the bathroom door if someone closes it. Just my bathroom though, not any other bathroom. It also doesn't matter who is in the bathroom, that door will open and open now. It's led to some people asking to use another bathroom when they come to visit or learning the hard way that a closed door that is not locked means quite a lot to a cat. It apparently means "Please, do come in!"
Bratty cats can be frustrating and embarrassing, but they are entertaining, that's for sure.

I think it's part of the rules of being a cat:
"Humans shall not be allowed into the bathroom unless accompanied by one or more felines."
Usually it's the youngest who gets tagged with this duty.

Another one of the Cat Rules is
"There shall be no doors- only portals from one place to another."

They do make exceptions for the 'no doors' rule if the door is between them and things like inclement weather, next-door neighbor's dog, or other annoying things that they'd rather avoid.

Cats aren't stupid.

Pretty much everything I have to say has already been said by TheGreenIntern above, but if I may give my own bit of perspective on it....

I'm an Animal Science undergrad at the same university whose vet college is treating Jenka. I've chosen to specialize in Companion Animals and Nutrition (we have to pick "tracks"), and the head of the Companion Animal subdepartment is primarily feline-oriented, so that's what you get crammed full of when you pick that track. He spends an entire lecture on FIP in his classes, and for good reason: FIP is the worst three-letter combination a vet can come across. FIP is caused by feline coronavirus. Normally, feline coronavirus causes mild stomach flu in cats, and infection is highly transmissible and common where there's lots of cats. If you got your cat from a shelter, or it's a former stray, chances are it has FCV. FCV in and of itself is not such a bad thing. The problem is that coronaviruses are single-stranded RNA viruses. That means that during replication, there's no "spell check", and any mutation that happens, sticks. And when coronaviruses mutate, well....anyone remember SARS? Coronaviruses get nasty when they mutate, and as my dear boyfriend said above, "kitty cold" turns into "kitty ebola".

And the worst thing is that because it's viral, there's not much you can do but supportive therapy, and with FIP, that's not much. It is quite literally a death sentence - it just depends on whether it takes a few months or a week. You can't even really create a vaccine, because the high mutation rate would render it obsolete before it reached the shelves. The good news is that in most situations, FIP is rare (1/5000 is the figure they taught us). But 1/5000 still means that it happens, and when it does, it's devastating. There's a reason that I started shaking and crying when they said FIP was likely....and I'd already begun shaking and crying the moment they said it was peritonitis: viral or bacterial, there's little chance of survival.

I'm hoping that this is some weird virus, because her symptoms have stumped all the vets, but....I don't know. They taught us to be realistic when dealing with diseases, and that part of my brain is still putting up a good fight. It's just hard to reconcile the cold facts from class when it's your baby there in the ICU....

Brian Blessed's Bastard Boy: Mrs. BBBB here. Hubby is in the kitchen making us breakfast this morning, and he left me with the computer. He told me what to do with it, but seeing as how I've never done this before, hopefully I don't screw this up too much. I wanted to thank everyone for all your kind words, encouragement, prayers, and everything else that was sent my way while all this was going on. I know I had it easy, and I honestly cannot believe that honey actually held everything together like he did. He kept telling me that he didn't have a choice, and that when things got bad, he came here on Fark and vented. All of you helped him get through this, and I cannot thank you enough for that. I'm hoping to get on here more often once things calm down around here, but for now, he said to use his screen name and not to screw it up too much. Below is a picture of our first cat, Hattie Marie. She was my baby and a beautiful Russian Blue that turned into a gigantic cat. Sadly we lost her about 7 years ago, but Fat Waffles has taken her role for me. Happy Caturday everyone, I am so very grateful for all of you and all that you have done for my husband, my kids, and for me.

Mrs. BBBB!
How good to see you here! Glad you are home and hope things go well for you.
Your husband has bragged on you constantly and I kinda see why. Everything you've been dealing with...
then you say that you 'had it easy'...
You are absolutely amazing.

Hai guize...Happy Caturday!!

I'm barely halfway through the thread but since we are on the "I am an old Farker" topic, I wanted to take a moment to post the official Caturday Get Off Mah Lawn plaque for all those who are worthy. CDK made this several years ago for all us old Caturday Farkers (and some honorary members).

/sigh

Sweetie, moving on is for sissies! Is this the same shrink that fell asleep during your session? The hardest part of grief is finding the point when you can look at the pictures and smile. It takes everyone as long as it is going to take to get to this point. The AVERAGE amount of time a person grieves for the loss of a loved one is 2 years. Some people process the loss faster, and some take many many years to get to that point. Just remember that you are loved here and this is a safe place to feel your grief. (((((((hugs)))))))

TheChaosPath: Yay Caturday!

We got two new kittens this past Caturday, two sisters. The first one is Malishka... poor little thing, she was fine when she came home, but now she's got a bacterial infection that's making her stomach feel bad and seriously diminishing her activity levels (but she still tries)

[farm9.staticflickr.com image 375x500]

And then we have Freya, who's one vocal little girl

[farm9.staticflickr.com image 375x500]

And here's some awesome kitten cuddles!

Gremie is chasing around the house like crazy. He found an old gray catnip mouse and is throwing it all over the place. At least I think it's an old nip mouse, it must be because Jack is just laying at my feet trying to stay out of the way. If it was a real mouse Jack would be joining in the hunt. Also, this mouse isn't squeeking in terror.

Hi sweetie! Great to see you here!

whiplash1017: Local SPCA was having a weekend special to adopt a pet. Wife and I go, she finds the perfect kitten. He even sought her out when she came back in the room and jumped on her after climbing up a scratching post. Too bad he was adopted about an hour ago and was still in the kitten room waiting on neutering. Went home without a kitten.
A few days later... I was woken up to the sound of a cat crying... looked around the house, wasn't any problem with our only cat, Lilly. I go out to the porch and look towards the bedroom window, don't see or hear anything.
Next day, sitting in sight of porch with door open, Lilly runs out, wife is behind Lilly- she is obviously interested in something outside. Wife almost screams "Its a kitten!" She was dirty, skinny and very interested in Lilly, but not so much with the humans. I bring food and water outside, which the kitten dives into after I am a safe distance away. I didn't want to leave her out there alone, especially since the lawn care was coming thru and they might also be spraying. Using Lilly as bait we were able to coax her into the porch (fully screened in, aka lanai) and hung out until the wife and I got back from our meeting. Got the new kitten to the vet, no FIV, maybe worms, and we decide to keep her. Two weeks later, they play together, but Lilly still wants to be angry with her. Named her Gabby because she talks so much.

couple pics (cuz I'm bad at this)

She is adorable! She sure knew the right house to go to! I adore Torties!

Do come back - you've been missed. It took me several years before I could talk about my beloved cat Simon without choking back tears. He went on New Year's Eve; not a happy holiday in my book. SpaceButler: laulaja: FoxDay? I thought it was FurDay!

Well, maybe, but I didn't have the heart to tell those adorable kits. Besides, they have a point; foxes deserve their own day too!

laulaja: SpaceButler, if I've seen your typing & posts before, they're not recalled. Now curiosity is piqued, as that of cats always is, but need to wait til this posts to satisfy it.

I had to give up my beloved kitten when I moved halfway across Canada a couple years ago, so without anything to contribute, I've just been a very occasional lurker on Caturday threads. But I snapped a bunch of pictures of these arctic fox kits while traveling in Iceland earlier this year, and they've just been sitting on my hard drive since. So I couldn't resist sharing some.

Like this!

I haven't posted anything here in a long time, but I want to share something special. My hubby and I were inspired by the viral video sensation, Gangnam Style, and decided to make our own parody using our cat, Cruiser, as the star. We have never done anything like this before and we had so much fun shooting it!

I know I'm only a liter, but I hope you all will enjoy our video and share it around - we wanted to see how many YouTube hits we could get, just for fun. We were dared that we couldn't get over 300 hits in a week and we are hoping that with Fark's help - and hopefully Cheezburger will post it, too - that we can exceed that and win the bet!

If you watch it, please leave a comment or like it - we really want to share the laughs and our cat, Cruiser is becoming such a diva that he wants to read his fan mail.
