What, your precious internet anonymity didn't really work out for you. farkin whiny Reddit biatches.

As moderator of about 400 subreddits, violentacrez had become known for controlling shock forums like r/picsofdeadkids, r/nazi, and at one time, r/jailbait.

Also recently subreddits dedicated to public upskirt photos, with some users intentionally targeting the underage, and a subreddit dedicated towards beating women. Reddit has immediately leapt to the defense of this person as a valuable member of the community.

Seriously, don't go to Reddit. It's full of terrible people.

It's a joke. He also asked to be mod of /r/beatingwomen while being mod of /r/srs, a feminism subreddit, because he thought it would be amusing.

Apparently it's not.

Gawker is a worthless pile of shiat though, so I can't say I will be visiting their sites. Not that i did much to begin with.

Today more than seven different subreddits banned links to stories from Gawker in solidarity with violentacrez, despite the fact that most regular redditors refuse to click on links from the media network to begin with.

Could we try that?

GAT_00: Reddit has immediately leapt to the defense of this person as a valuable member of the community.

This is not true.

What is more accurate is that at Reddit, a few sub-reddits, and some big ones are in that, are taking a stance against doxxing.

If Gawker's reporter wants to report on violentacrez there is no journalistic need to dox him. If he is breaking the law, report that to the police and dox him there. Gawker's reporter, Adrian Chen is not doing this out of some sense of journalism. He has a long history of acts specifically taken against reddit. Doxxing this one individual is a part of that.

This was followed up by the predditors site also doxxing people that had engaged in posting to creepshots, which ugly as it is, does seem to be legal.

There were also occurrences of what I think was actually illegal, people threatened with doxxing unless they engaged in certain acts (turning over control of their reddits, terminating their accounts.)

We've all been involved with internet feuds. For the most part, these feuds should stay on the internet and not carry over to real life.

So quite a few reddit groups are taking a stance against Gawker's doxxing, and yes, violentacrez is a pustule and he is at the heart of it.

"The trouble with fighting for human freedom is that one spends most of one's time defending scoundrels. For it is against scoundrels that oppressive laws are first aimed, and oppression must be stopped at the beginning if it is to be stopped at all."

― H.L. Mencken

I would think one of FARK's uber liberal elites would be supportive of freedom, because first it's assholes like violentacrez, then maybe it's atheists or muslims, and at some point it's just because you were an asshole that one day in that forum.

That's pretty much my impression. Sometimes 4chan can be surprisingly interesting/useful though... but I've never had that experience with Reddit.

Frankly... Reddit seems like it's full of Narcissists who don't care about people so much as they care about their super-specific subculture.

Fubini: Frankly... Reddit seems like it's full of Narcissists who don't care about people so much as they care about their super-specific subculture.

Reddit seems to be the new web browser friendly usenet, with bonus gamification and a bit of social networking.

It's interesting to compare reddit and fark, with fark being so much older and yet handling images better (imho) than reddit until you load in browser extensions. And yet, reddit does some things better than fark simply because it's newer: formatting of posts for example.

Fark feels homier (that's an "m" not an "r n"), because Drew pops up now and again and there is a strong and fun cult of Drew/Beer. And also because there are only so many threads, so like rides at Disneyland you can do them in an afternoon.

Reddit feels like some social experiment because the Admins there are often very very silent when they should speak up, because to them it's all bacterial growth in a "free speech" petri dish sim.

Fark used to handle images better. Now it rejects half the links on the web and limits you to 56k modem speed friendly images.

Some troll doesn't want to be outed as a troll. Doxxed? Look reddit is mostly lame, if you are going to troll, mod or generally participate in seedy subreddits use a different account or get behind 7 proxies.

What I was referring to was that FARK allows us to inline images, and reddit without a browser extension just makes them an annoying link to click on.

It also seems to be that 99.999% of images at reddit are basically just captioned memes or truly idiot animated gifs that collect a lot of oohs and ahs. For whatever reason, it just seems like most of the images at FARK seem a step above that.

That's because Fark has no real way to stroke an ego. Reddit has the voting on comments thing where people get wrapped up in upvoting and downvoting instead of just posting and and being interested in what's actually being said.

I think that's true. Also, for me at least, because all of FARK is so much bigger than any sub reddit but FARK itself is so much smaller, it's much easier to recognize people at FARK and then be totally annoyed to find that someone you dislike for X is someone you agree with for Y.

In the long run, there is no anonymity on the internet. If you troll (and sometimes even if you don't) eventually someone will find out who you really are. Reddit seems quite happy to out trolls it disagrees with on other parts of the internet - so this sounds like one of their own getting a a bit of taste of their own medicine.

I know Reddit's the big thing on the internet and Fark's kind of the smaller backwoods operation or whatever...

But any time I try to go to Reddit, the site hurts my eyes and I see a bunch of stuff that doesn't look interesting. Then I try to read a comment thread, and nobody seems to say anything particularly interesting (a couple okay comments, but no sort of conversation.)

Then something looks good, but just links straight to a youtube video that's underwhelming. Shrug. I'll take Fark's identifiable trolls for some reason.

2012-10-12 02:30:24 AM
I'm thinking Gawker is only like 50% bad. Gawker's main site is terrible, Kotaku terrible and Gizmodo is the worst. On the good side we have Deadspin; Jalopnik, io9 and Lifehacker are reasonable and even Jezebel can be mildly entertaining in a chauvinistic way (those ladies need somewhere to menstruate online together)

2012-10-12 02:37:06 AM
Reddit is nothing more than a third rate Fark and a fourth rate 4chan. I have a deep disdain for Reddit that borders on being unhealthy. I hate everything about it. It's full of Asperger preteens and teens, and the "college" kids that go there are probably in community college or dropouts. They have absolutely nothing worthwhile, and I'm especially offended by the very notion of the AMAs. The very premise is narcissistic and attention whorey. Neither of which are uncommon on the internet, but this is the worst of both worlds. Who the hell do these people think they are in which people want to take their time to ask them questions? What makes them so damn special in their eyes? It's painful, because celebrities I actually give a frak about like Louis CK and Kevin Smith have done AMAs. Gary Johnson has done a couple as well, but I can let that slide since he's attempting to be smart and broaden his demographic. Newsflash: The farktards that go to Reddit are not going to vote with intelligence. Ugh, farking Reddit. Ya know what? Fark should add a Reddit filter so that the word itself is banned.

Fark is leaps and bounds better than anything Reddit could ever hope or dream to become. As someone mentioned earlier Fark feels more at home. You have Drew pop in every now and then. There's actual quality control even if the mods fail sometimes. The people that post in the threads, even the most idiotic of trolls and assholes still have a better quality to them than anything Reddit could ever do.

AHHHHH, fark fark fark, I'm ranting.

/end rant

2012-10-12 02:44:51 AM
Reddit is alright. As long as you don't participate in the comments, read the comments, click on anything that mentions karma or anything from the atheism, politics, gaming, AMA, IAmA, or AskReddit subreddits.

Just click the funny pictures and move on.

The voting thing on Reddit turns into a way to force everyone to follow the hivemind. People complain about the Fark politics tab, but on Reddit voicing anything outside the hivemind, no matter how thoughtful, is a sure fire way to get downvoted to oblivion and quite possibly to have people follow you and downvote your other posts around the site as well.

Niche subreddits can be useful--it's a good place to talk about random stuff like fountain pens, but any of the larger subs just are a mess even before you go into all of the drama with r/SRS and the way they've taken over formerly useful subs.

Yeah, it's funny how gawker likes to get on their high horse about reddit when they have such questionable ethics. Not to mention that a site that started out with the "gawker stalker" really has no right to act so righteous about creepshots--they've got plenty of creepy behavior of their own in their past. Oh yeah, and there was also their obsession with trying to out Anderson Cooper for years.

The Gawker sites are a cancer of the internet.

I don't know what sort of deal it has with Fark, but not a day goes by where Gawker gets a few links for describing another link instead of Fark linking it directly.

Sometimes you need to go through 2-5 links to see the original content.
Fark is a news aggregate, why the fark does it link to what is basically another one?

I'd almost put Gawker at Ebaum levels, but they do usually provide a link so they're not as bad.

Doxxing is a stupid term. Can't it just be "identifying"? Even "outing" would do.

I don't know what I hate more, Reddit or Gawker. I do think that no matter how questionable the depraved antics of some people, if they're not illegal, or harming anyone, then no one has a right to crusade to shut them down, because that's even worse.

I find the fact that so many people are dumping on Reddit hilarious. I bailed on Fark for a while in favor of reddit because there was more content and you could have discussions without the Politics Tab trolls infesting every corner of the site.

That being said, the Sports Tab game discussion threads are still better on Fark. So, shock and amazement, I use both sites.

That's because Fark has no real way to stroke an ego. Reddit has the voting on comments thing where people get wrapped up in upvoting and downvoting instead of just posting and and being interested in what's actually being said.

Smart|Funny?

UNC_Samurai: I find the fact that so many people are dumping on Reddit hilarious. I bailed on Fark for a while in favor of reddit because there was more content and you could have discussions without the Politics Tab trolls infesting every corner of the site.

That being said, the Sports Tab game discussion threads are still better on Fark. So, shock and amazement, I use both sites.

Shhhh! Fark is no place for rational discussion. It's for alcoholism, drunk driving and trolling.

Screw gawker. Screw their imperialist nonsense, and triple screw their ugly, poorly designed layout. Screw them for ruining lifehacker. Screw them for making internet journalism look about as credible as it was 20 years ago.

I won't click on their links any more than new york times' paywall horsecrap. I have the whole lot of them adblocked at the domain level.

3. GOOD! We should ban gawker links, too. Crappy template sites that just repost youtube videos with, like, 3 sentences summarizing the video... negative value added.

Redit vs. Gawker - can't we root for both sides to lose?

Yeah, it's been that way since the days of Usenet - a group/site becomes boring or unusable due to trolls and ignorant motherfarkers so you go hang out somewhere else for a while. Kind of like bars, for that matter. Occasionally you have to drink somewhere else.

Gawker has become only marginally entertaining since writers like Choire Sicha left for The Awl, and Lifehacker has been replaced with Wirecutter on my geek reading list.

OldManDownDRoad: /never "got" Reddit

It's great for the smaller subreddits. Things devoted to specific video games etc.

Anything with large numbers of subscribers is pretty much worthless, but if you need obscure info about a video game you're playing or something, there is always a subreddit full of likeminded people who can help.

then there are subreddits like /r/atheism, which is a farking cult. They worship books they've never read, relentlessly try and convert everyone they see, and promote "peace" while regularly saying that religion should be wiped off the face of the planet.

When it comes to looking for info, I can see the value in a subreddit. But I've gotten to the point where I look for sites or forums that are registration-only and even moderated for the reason you mention - large groups of people mean large groups of assholes, it's just human nature. Recently a forum I belong to that discusses the history of surfboard design had to go to moderation because people will NOT give politics a rest lately. Just farking stop it. Geebus. The owner says he will drop moderation after the election. While normally I would find that to be a huge PITA, right now I'm just tired of political crap.

Romney will enact federal legislation to make all surfboards square with rounded corners, in order to get Apple IP licensing deals.

Obama will make all surf boards mandated to be made of carbon fiber to reduce the dependance on Styrofoam.

/Can't think of much that is further removed from politics then surfboard design.

Jeeze, you don't know how close you are to the truth. Recently it ran like this:

"Anyone know where I can get a new set of brushes for my Skil planer?"

"No more brushes for Skil because the Republican free trade policy shipped all those jobs to Mexico."

or

"Anyone got a line on marine resin that doesn't come in 5-gal buckets?"

"Obama's environmental czar has banned all marine resin for non-commercial users."

And on and on. Geebus. It was like having your racist Uncle Pete over on Sunday back in the day, when he blamed all the ills of the world on "the nigras" and your Mom had to tell him to STFU.

The moment I saw the comments on Yahoo News hit their absolute low (and that's saying something, if you remember the early 2000s), was when South Carolina hired Steve Spurrier. The comments on that article deteriorated into a referendum on the Iraq War and Christianity in about 12 posts.

Reddit becomes a lot more bearable once you unsub from any subreddit with more than a million people in it. Like you said, I mostly go there for the specific game boards and ignore everything else. /r/atheism and /r/worldnews are worth visiting if you ever want to lose faith in humanity.

Anything related to theism or spirituality is ruined by /r/atheism

"You just have to have faith"
"I'll have faith when you show me a mathematical proof for God."
"Um. Do you know what Faith means?"
"It means you are a worthless person and you should become an atheist like me"

Yeah, further proof that the atheists can be as big of a pain as the fundies.

But don't tell them that unless you want to see the comments section go completely to hell.

Oh, yeah, the News & Observer comments section can go ballistic at times. In fact, I can pretty much set my stopwatch for when the mods will shut down the comments on certain stories. If it involves politics or religion, I am surprised they allow them at all.

Come to think of it. The majority of time I have been banned online has been solely for mocking.

And then there were the flamewars that developed between /r/atheism and /r/LGBT because the denizens of /r/atheism insisted on using the language of coming out while insisting they had it worse than actual LGBT people and were oh, so persecuted. Never mind that the reason people hate the r/atheism crowd has nothing to do with them being atheists and everything to do with them being insufferable assholes.

When Gawker did their site redesign, it wouldn't display in my browser due to NoScript. While I was a fan of lifehacker, I shrugged and moved on.

Recently, I inadvertently clicked a Gawker link and, lo and behold, it worked and the page was displayed. NoScript still doesn't allow scripts from Gawker to run, so the site must have made a change. I'm curious if the change is from lost traffic due to NoScript... (Or Adblock. Or Ghostery.)

I waded into reddit because I thought the atheism group would be interesting. Instead it's bad memes on imgr, witless exchanges with non-atheists on facebook ("Look at this I pwned them!"), Christians claiming they're oppressed by the fact that /r/atheism is on the front page, and the usual neckbeards.

The thing that gets me is that the misogyny is really deep there. It's like a dark river. Here on fark, when people indulge in it, I feel like that it's the kind of talk where you get guys together who punch each other in the arm and call each other badasses, but who go home and coo over their dogs and cats and treat their wives/moms/sisters like queens.

GAT_00: As moderator of about 400 subreddits, violentacrez had become known for controlling shock forums like r/picsofdeadkids, r/nazi, and at one time, r/jailbait.

Or you could hang out in r/woodworking and r/sailing instead.
