farking pandas... time to let them die off.

Yeah I don't get it. This species is trying so hard to go extinct. What's the point in saving it?
It's just nature, you're not "preserving" anything, just trying to prolong their presence here for our own purpose.

I do wonder about pandas. They don't want to have sex. They eat the lowest-energy food they can find, and that's all they'll eat. They only have like one offspring at a time and take forever to have more.

I'm all for protecting endagered species, but meet us halfway here, Pandas.

So are tiger cubs (which admittedly grow into something that could rip your face off while it's dreaming), but Asians still kill them to last 13 seconds longer in bed, or whatever the fark they do.

If like 5%* of the resources dedicated to preserving Pandas were redirected to Tiger conservation, they probably woudn't be on the verge of extinction.

ThatGuyGreg: farking pandas... time to let them die off.

you could say that about any animal that humans have caused distress. They need a ton of space to survive in the wild. That space no longer exists as China has encroached on the lands needed to sustain these animals. Sure their natural cycles aren't helping things but they aren't dying off because of natural reasons. They are dying off because they can't use the land they need to survive.

Same with great whites. I don't think they have ever successfully raised one in captivity, doesn't mean they don't thrive in the wild.

Why do people say dumb things like this? Yes, it's birth rate makes it difficult to sustain the animal, but it got along fine before people starting tearing up the landscape and farming on their dead carcasses.

You might as well say the same thing about most animals on the endangered list. "Well, just let 'em die since they can't birth fast enough to make up for your poaching and tearing up their land!"

That was one alcoholic panda.

Yeah but it's just conservation for the sake of conservation. Hard to explain what I mean.
I don't know anything about their habitats, but I do know that the refuse to mate, and barely move while they're awake. Like someone said above, at least meet us halfway here.

Millions of years of evolution seemed alright with letting Pandas roam unmolested in the bamboo forests but... you know... over hunting and deforestation went and wiped out a majority of the guys.

We can rip on "boner pills" all we like, but I'm hoping an unintended consequence of their availability is the reduced demand for endangered animal parts.

The only way to save Panda's is to start breeding them down in size, like a Shetland Pony... down to the size of a standard teddy bear. The demand for them as pets will generate millions of dollars -

I also think that is the answer to helping Hippos... all I want in this life is a mini Hippo as a pet... that would stomp and huff and puff and charge when angered... right into your ankles... then you just pick him up and say 'you're a little angry hippo aren't you... aren't you.... and so cute too -

Wow. Just wow. No species tries to go extinct. Every living creature on this planet - including you - has an innate instinct to perpetuate the species. Pandas are in trouble because they have very exacting habitat, ecosystem, dietary and other requirements. They are closely related to raccoons and live only in a very small region in China. Much of their habitat has been lost and they are adapting too slowly to keep up with the changes. The US, China and other countries have been researching furiously to find ways to help them adapt and to keep the population large enough for the species to survive. It is hard to keep pandas in captivity and even harder to so breed them. But they are unique, intelligent and beautiful creatures and I believe worth the effort. What some people just don't get is that we live in a complex and interconnected web of life. We, in our Judeo-Christian-derived arrogance, think we can just apply technology and disregard the laws of nature and evolution. I can assure you that we cannot. What we learn about saving other creatures from extinction may one day help us save ourselves.

I had a boss one time say to me "Evolve or die" Because you know the company was changing and the work I was doing wasn't going to last but for a few more months. So I had to change to stay employed. As the old quote goes: "Specialization is for insects" When anything becomes so specialized that it can't deal with any small change it will get selected against. Look at natures true survivors (cockroaches, sharks) and compare them to the pile of evolutionary dead ends (dodo bird, wooly mammoth). You will notice that having a niche is a nice way to limit competition but it is also an Achilles heal.

Wiki says that they grow up to be 3 feet tall and 600 lbs; that's about the same size as a big domesticated farm pig. But; hippos are notoriously territorial; and account for more human deaths that all the big cats in Africa combined.

So; maybe if they stayed small they'd be alright; but, don't ask me to keep one.

This is not how evolution works. Evolution is the process by which organisms that are pre-adapted to deal with changes are capable of more successful reproduction after the change has occurred. Creatures that cannot successfully adapt go extinct over a long period of time unless there is some catastrophe causes a rapid extinction event.

As for specialization, almost all creatures are specialized in some way. In the tropical zones, because of the relatively stable climate, there is a very high species diversity. These creatures must specialize in order to compete for limited resources. In temperate zones, species diversity falls because of more climatic challenges and because resources are lower and more spread out. The creatures in these environments specialize by having larger body mass to retain heat and are more efficient predators, etc. In the arctic zones, diversity falls even lower and specialization is at its highest. Study up on Hutchinson's niche theory to understand more; it's really facinating. Here's a good summary at Wikipedia: Link

I totally get trying to save a species
but most of those that have existed are already gone.
and other picked up the slack.
that's how it works

That said, I hate HATE
groups that would wantonly kill or drive an animal into extiction
to get boners
grrrrrr

I felt like opening the dump valve and smothering all the French beaches that I'd never see

I understand all that, just not very good at saying that in words. Just remember: Your strength is your weakness, and vis-versa. The panda is a very good example of this. Lot birth rate is a great thing if you have limited resources but it makes you very vulnerable to replacement problems. Humans have had to deal with this in rather interesting ways. It takes a lot to build a human (~15 years) so we have social constructed ideas that woman should not fight wars. Imagine if WWI had been fought with woman instead of men. France had lost nearly an entire generation of men. That would have devastated them demographically if that had been woman. It would have taken several generations to build back their population. Panda's don't have drunk slutty French woman to quickly build back their populations.

Should we try to save them? Sure, But not at the expense of other endangered animals. That said I have also heard stores of people so afraid lawyers would destroy their livelihood they "got rid" of an endangered animal that had been seen on their land. I don't know if that story is true but I can see the incentive is there.

Has anyone else pointed out how wrong you are? Let's begin with the claim that sharks aren't threatened with extinction.

Sharks are threatened with extinction from over-fishing. Also, many of them are specialized, so...

Your argument is invalid.

My hair has been a bird, but only briefly. Pulviation of my scalpular landscape implied avian dwelling, and subsequent indulgence in a perception-enhancing, neurologically reactive compound made my hair a bird.

In that case, those people who find them cute and get sentimental enough to think them worth saving should happily contribute the money needed to save them. If it is not enough to save them, clearly either the pandas aren't cute enough or you don't care enough! That's the problem, isn't it. You're a callous, selfish, non-panda-carer and, and you'd rather waste your money on frappuccino, pedicures, and accessories while a mother panda cries in a corner over her sweet, innocent, cute, little baby. She's crying, did you know that? Yes, she is.

You care, don't you? Send them more money.
