(NASA)   Can someone look at the data and tell me what is going on? It looks like the irradiance dropped off the chart yesterday. Why? How? What does it mean?   (sdo.gsfc.nasa.gov) divider line 46

It looks like the irradiance dropped off the chart yesterday.

The numbers in some wavelengths decreased while in other wavelengths increased. What you really see is a change in the apparent wavelength of the light. This is perfectly normal when strong gravity waves rip through our solar system and it is also responsible for the purple haze in your iPhone photos.

What does it mean?

According to my observations solar irradiance dropped off nearly 100% shortly after 6:00 PM last night but increased to much higher levels starting shortly before 7:00 AM this morning.

What does it mean?

It means the interglacial we've been enjoying for the past twenty thousand years or so is coming to an end, and that we're about to enter a new ice age. In 20 years Canada and Scandinavia will dim memories, and most of the earth will be uninhabitable above the 45th parallel. Sux to be you guyz.

I don't know. Why are you asking me? Ask a scientist. A radiologist or something.

Actually, now that I take time to read TFL(ink), it looks like SDO "reset" or "rebooted" several times during day 284, and simply was not recording data for several short periods of time, causing the "tape" to show values of zero.

That said, for most of the past decade the sun has been getting quieter than at any time during the past several centuries. In the past, quieter solar cycles have preceded prolonged cooler climate and glacial advances. We'll know more in several more years, but one thing is already certain...the current solar cycle is shaping up as only about half as active as normal. Check out NOAA's 'big-3' solar indicators compared to their values during the previous cycle.

Well duh, it was night time. The sun dims and then goes out at night, only to brighten in the morning. Don't you guys know anything.

Are you a scientist or a Thomas Pynchon literary critic? i don't know if I should ask for more information because gravity effects on iPhones sound cool, or what.

Well you see, subby, Voyager 1 left the solar system on Tuesday, and in doing so, it punched a hole in the solar system wall, so now all of the energy is leaking out, like a deflating balloon. We can expect the solar system to start zipping around the universe making a fart noise any minute now.

Was it night? The sun isn't shining at night.

Many sats use one sensor and several filters that are rotated in front of the sensor for different wavelengths. If the rotation system gets stuck between filters, the sensor will report that the sun has gone out.
