Mugato: "chief diversity officer"? This kind of shiat is why I'm only mostly liberal.

That's the sneakiest way I've ever seen someone admit to having a conservative member.

Suppression of human nature in order to comply with arbitrary meaningless and ultimately unobtainable lofty goals.

That was kind of my first thought. How can you possibly be a "diversity officer" anyway? You'd have to have virtually zero opinions of your own, or be like me and just hate humanity evenly across the board. This woman probably felt like a token anyway: Look at her hiring qualifications "First deaf African-American PhD!" Wow! Was she also a left-handed gimp closeted lesbian too?

I'm more inclined to feel sorry for her under these circumstances, than feel outraged.

I couldn't read this without thinking of this week's Hoarders (maybe the most eminently snarkable show on all TV), who was hoarding all sorts of crap because Jesus told her the Rapture was coming and she needed to stock up for her kids...who apparently were not going to make the cut. This also just in: Christians don't really care much about the teachings of Jesus. They are more interested in the Old Testament. It's more rape-y and murder-y.

To their credit, if there really IS a god who is all knowing and all powerful, he would HAVE to be some sort of sadistic nut job.

If civil unions aren't enough and the gays want marriage equality, one of the buttbangers needs to be the woman. You shouldn't change the titles (man + woman = married) of a long standing tradition just to accommodate a recently accepted sexual fetish. Meet the traditional marriage people halfway.

How wonderful to see black people embracing the gay community and supporting democrats in the fight for gay civil rights. Blacks and gays, arm in arm, hands together as they stand with the gays and support obama.

JosephFinn: Diogenes: I don't think she should lose her job or anything. Is her job exclusively dedicated to diversity at the school? I would just change her responsibilities.

Gallaudet is an interesting place. I had a three month consulting gig there. It was very enlightening. I was surprised to learn of all the intolerances that existed between different types of deaf people. People who were born deaf sometimes looked down on those who weren't. Kids with cochlear implants were referred to as "refrigerator magnets." Then there's the Bell Society which places a high importance on deaf people learning to speak.

As someone who doesn't know how to sign, it gave me an appreciation for what it must be like for a deaf person to operate in the hearing world. How do you tell someone how you want your hair cut? As I struggled to learn some ASL to get around easier I constantly embarrassed myself by resorting to reflexive pantomime when doing something as simple as trying to order a sandwich at the student center.

I knew a little bit about this but got much more of the...discussions in a fascinating documentary called Sound and Fury, about various people and families struggling with the decision of whether or not to get the implant, especially with the potential for putting it in a smaller child. Some really interesting discussions about deaf culture and whether or not it's a betrayal to try and "cure" yourself of deafness (and boy, there's a word you don't want to toss around in that context).

There are hearing kids who were born to deaf parents that would prefer to go to Gallaudet but can't. They've grown up in a deaf environment and it's where they feel most comfortable.

We thought she was just being her usual crazy self but it turns out she was sorta right.

While there are probably some legitimate racists here, I think it's perfectly valid to point out the hypocrisy in a black deaf woman, someone who has probably benefited enormously from all kinds of affirmative action/diversity scholarships and perks (based on both race and disability), actively fighting for inequality. The fact that it's her JOB to encourage equality and value people for their difference makes that hypocrisy much more pronounced.

I think that other people have the right to hold beliefs that I disagree with, and advocate for those beliefs. If those beliefs are truly stupid, then their advocacy will have the opposite effect of what they intend: that of publicizing the idiocy of their beliefs (see also: Westboro Baptist Church).

As there are no longer secular arguments against marriage equality, homophobia is approaching the dustbin of history. I don't think the university should boot her but I respect their desire to be ahead of the curve of what's considered closed-minded in society.

So then the position of Chief Diversity Officer should require that applicants hold a certain set of pre-approved beliefs, and the university should state that up front. Which would again highlight the inherent contradiction of "Diversity"--that there is actually a rigid orthodoxy of thought against which one rebels at one's own risk.

You just made my point for me. Your "too accepting/not accepting enough" criterion is the same as my statement that you have to hold a certain set of pre-approved beliefs to qualify for that job. And the university may be well within its rights to fire her, and she may, objectively, be a bad fit for a position that is inherently political (which any "diversity" position is).

The fact that the university wouldn't make that clear up front (i.e. before she took the job) is an excellent example of the disingenuousness inherent in the term "diversity", which is just a fig leaf for political correctness--a term that fell out of favor when people started to get uncomfortable with the concept of an orthodoxy of ideas enforced by a self-appointed thought police.

If that's the way that the university wants to run their show, they are certainly entitled to do so. But they should have the courage to call the job what it is--a Chief Political Officer, or a Chief Orthodoxy Officer. Or maybe just call it Chief Commisar.

I never really got "running dog." What's wrong with a dog who runs? Isn't running a GOOD thing? Eventually I had to look it up to realize it's a really, really bad translation of a word that basically means "lackey" (which, granted, one could probably guess from context). I guess the moral of the story is that good translators are hard to find.
