Dr. Angela McCaskill signed the petition at her church after her preacher spoke against gay marriage, the Planet DeafQueer blog reported on Monday, citing a Gallaudet faculty member who first spotted the administrator's name on the document.

I bet she didn't expect them to hear about it...

Gallaudet University President T. Alan Hurwitz said in a statement.

His sentiments are unsurprising, considering his uncle's war record:

Why doesn't Jesus ever tell anyone to do something harmless, like shiat on the buffet at the Sizzler?

Doesn't it restrict diversity to not allow an intolerant religious bigot to be your Chief Diversity Officer?

I don't think she should lose her job or anything. Is her job exclusively dedicated to diversity at the school? I would just change her responsibilities.

Gallaudet is an interesting place. I had a three month consulting gig there. It was very enlightening. I was surprised to learn of all the intolerances that existed between different types of deaf people. People who were born deaf sometimes looked down on those who weren't. Kids with cochlear implants were referred to as "refrigerator magnets." Then there's the Bell Society which places a high importance on deaf people learning to speak.

As someone who doesn't know how to sign, it gave me an appreciation for what it must be like for a deaf person to operate in the hearing world. How do you tell someone how you want your hair cut? As I struggled to learn some ASL to get around easier I constantly embarrassed myself by resorting to reflexive pantomime when doing something as simple as trying to order a sandwich at the student center.

Maybe she can apply for the post of Chief Bigotry Officer.

Nah. It's just another case of "diversity=black".

If you're a "Chief Diversity Officer"...that's just sad. She shouldn't be fired, just pitied.

I don't know what a "diversity officer" is, but her anti-gay position is still irrational and shows a lack of proper judgment.

I'm in a pissy mood, so let me say fark you very much to the God Botherers and Jesus Freaks who seem hell-bent in turning the United States into some backwards backwater full of Wal-Marts and strip-mall churches. Fark you and the horse you rode in on. Fark you and your bullshiat theology. And furthermore, eat a bowl of farking dicks and farking die in a fire.

Seems like the Christian thing to do would be to resign because of an ethical conflict with your job description...

Why do such stupid pointless rolls exist? Diversity officer...what does that even do exactly? Sit around and look at meaningless statistics? "Not enough brown in the yellow department, needs less white overall" Is my first bet every single working day consists of. Suppression of human nature in order to comply with arbitrary meaningless and ultimately unobtainable lofty goals.

That's a pretty specific accolade.

Why would a "chief diversity officer" be concerned with an aspect of homosexuality outside of academia? Her job should be ensuring that people of all colors, orientation, etc. get a fair shot at a good education - not whether or not the people of the state let gays marry.

Take that, free speech.

Wow. I think that's kind of farked up. I've only known a few deaf people. I always felt kind of sorry for them, but I guess they can be assholes too. Having a disability apparently doesn't mean you have any tolerance for other people.

It is counter productive to modern society. It is the inclusion of people who do not hold the same values as us, a muddling and deconstructing of ethical ways until no way works, a government of two headed asses in a game of tug of war, when one side gains a little leverage and stops to rest the other side pulls it right back to the starting line. This is all diversity does for us. It creates a detriment of the lowest common denominator that slags down the most excellent to meet quotas.

Things Jesus directly said about homosexuality: 0
Things Jesus directly said about divorce: Several things, including that getting divorced is a major sin tantamount to adultery

How many divorced Christians do you know who complain about homosexuality?

That is all.

Of course they don't. They see gays as trying to horn in on their action. Blacks spent centuries cultivating themselves as America's underclass. They've put a lot of time and effort ino getting to the front of the victimhood line and the sweet, sweet rewards that position brings like welfare checks, affirmative action hiring and Obamaphones.

And just when they get a brother elected to the highest office in the nation, a job he is clearly unqualified for, a job he only got through white guilt because crackers didn't want to vote for McCain and have the voting booth look at them like they're racist - then suddenly they see a bunch of butt-pirates lubing up and trying to squeeze them out. Why should they take that sitting down?

I remember reading an article about a deaf couple who was having a child. The mother of the child was deaf due to a genetic issue, and they specifically sought out a sperm donor with the same genetic issue to ensure the child would be born deaf. I think that's wrong.

Being deaf is certainly a culture, as there is shared experience and shared language - but that doesn't mean it's not also a disability.

I agree, I think. The same as a gay judge can fairly rule on prop 8, a person can put aside their personal conflicts of interest for their professional lives. Without proof of that I can hardly see wrongdoing, just bad judgment

Road Warrior: Couldn't have the diversity officer having an unallowed opinion now could we? That's thought crime! She should be fired and locked up!

It's a free country. She can believe what she wants.
However, being hostile to a particular group's rights may very well compromise one's ability to be a "Chief Diversity Officer".

No one's telling her that it's illegal to have the opinion she has. Only that it's wrong to be a bigot while being in charge of diversity. Much like you wouldn't trust a fox to watch a henhouse. Conflict of interests.

I don't see this as being too much different than if it were a white person who was found to be a member of the KKK. Either way, it's contrary to the promotion of diversity, which is what her job entails.

Diversity for diversity's sake is retarded. It really depends on the situation and the type of diversity.

In an effort to cure cancer, assembling an oncologist, a geneticist, and stem-cell researcher is a good kind of diversity. Assembling a homeopathic practitioner, a meter maid, and a preacher is a bad kind of diversity.

2012-10-11 02:31:10 PM
Conservatives believe job positions that only have value in a liberal reality should be filled with people who hold values opposite to the job's mission, to intentionally incapacitate what the job is meant to do. For example, Ambassador to the U.N. John Bolton.

2012-10-11 02:33:52 PM
I'm sure McCaskill had her reasons for signing the petition but the higher-ups at Gallaudet just wouldn't hear them.

I knew a little bit about this but got much more of the...discussions in a fascinating documentary called Sound and Fury, about various people and families struggling with the decision of whether or not to get the implant, especially with the potential for putting it in a smaller child. Some really interesting discussions about deaf culture and whether or not it's a betrayal to try and "cure" yourself of deafness (and boy, there's a word you don't want to toss around in that context).

Dow Jones and the Temple of Doom: In an effort to cure cancer, assembling an oncologist, a geneticist, and stem-cell researcher is a good kind of diversity.

But the Bible says that marriage is between an oncologist and a molecular biologist. Oncologists marrying geneticists, or god forbid a computational/systems biologist will ruin the whole sacred institution of marriage.

In high school a black woman was the schools health teacher, she was slightly off her rocker and actually pretty racist against blacks, when covering STDs she told us that HIV was so rampant among the black community because so many black men are on the DL and think its not gay if they dont use a condom. We thought she was just being her usual crazy self but it turns out she was sorta right.

You know I'm not sure how I feel about this one myself. I believe what you do in your own time is your own business. I also believe she has the right to sign a petition in accordance with her personal beliefs to the government. However it does lead me to question her ability to be fair in her position. On the other hand a person can do a job fairly even if it goes against their beliefs. It's a hard call.

One of the inherent contradictions of the "diversity" movement is that it has no tolerance for diversity of opinion.
