chachi88: Dow Jones and the Temple of Doom: chachi88: It should be legal in all 50 states to kick shiathead teenagers asses.

Farking kids think that there are no consequences to their actions.

You go, cranky old man!

Getting strangled is an appropriate consequence for parking in a "drive-thru only" spot? You're a lunatic.

And you're a misogynist. So?

Strangled? Nah, he was just giving him the old Vulcan Nerve Pinch. You like Star Trek right.

It's not that I agree but I understand.

A misogynist? Where do you people come up with this shiat

Krieghund: I don't think it's possible to qualify that sentence any more.

It has to be qualified, otherwise it's not inherently true. There are lots of stupid old people with terrible ideas and horrible personalities that should be locked away from society in a cold, dark room until they die alone and unloved. Rupert Murdoch banks on it.

The point is that there's opportunity there and you should be respectful by default in case there's some knowledge to be taken advantage of. Smart people wait until old people prove their idiots to be disrespectful to them.

joonyer: OrygunFarker: I once had an "elder" try to teach me a "lesson" on how to drive. Apparently I cut him off in traffic (or so he said), so he found it appropriate to speed around me, slam on his brakes, and get out of the car to verbally berate me. It wasn't until he reached into my car window when shiat got real.

I held his hand long enough to roll the window up in order to hold his arm, then drove about 15 mph for about one block, then rolled it down and let him off the "respect is earned, not given" ride.

Sure ya did, kid.

It was on 185th, between Five Guys, and Ace Hardware, in Aloha, Oregon. I could care less if you believe it or not. It's still real to THAT guy.

Boeheimian Rhapsody: China White Tea: Never really understood the age-entitles-one-to-respect thing. Good job, you managed to be born in a certain year and, thus far, haven't died. Good job on that, but it's not really an accomplishment worthy of respect in and of itself.

Your parents did a terrible job raising you.

I can't tell if you're trolling...

that's the sign of parents who did a damn good job. You give respect to those who've earned it, and to those you don't know until such time that they've demonstrated that they are not worthy of respect. That doesn't mean you go out of your way to be a schmuck, but you don't kowtow to people who are disrespectful in their actions.

Everyone gets the same chance... no additional privilege given or taken away save for those you do to yourself by your behavior.

This seems to be a popular sentiment. Perhaps my idea of what respect entails is different from yours, but it seems to me that respect for others should be the default, right up until someone proves themselves unworthy of that respect.

We don't live in small tribal communities anymore. The number of people you are likely to interact with on a daily basis is fairly large. The number of people you know well enough to have developed an earned respect for will be considerably smaller. Your "no respect until it's earned" policy would mean that very few people respect those they're interacting with in any given situation.

Perhaps this doesn't make you an asshole inherently, but it makes a damn good rationalization for acting like one.

/I'm not actually calling you an asshole, merely pointing out how this particular philosophy may be detrimental to society at large

THIS!

Survival is not a virtue. Respect should come from something more than age. A guy who lives to be 100 by stepping on or figuratively eating everyone around him is not worthy any respect, much less more respect then someone younger then him

The type of person worthy of respect doesn't go around demanding it. They get it as a natural consequence of their persona, and when they don't get it, their respectable qualities preclude demanding, especially (or at least) in the manner this old guy did.

kvinesknows: yeah.. its funner to actually grab the finger they are giving you. Tell them calmly that why thank you for the offer of the finger, it certainly does look delicious and then ask them if they would like you to remove it right now, or if they would like to continue to use it before you accept their gracious offer.

( while twisting the finger in such a manner as to bend their wrist and force them to the ground )

Usually they ask for the finger back.

I find responses like this hilarious. Do you actually get away with shiat like this? Are you still in high school, perhaps?

Giving you the finger is constitutionally-protected free speech, specifically confirmed by the Supreme Court. Grab my finger and you've just committed assault and battery, and ARE going to spend the night in jail.

Try to escalate one move further and I'll pull out my carry pistol and drop you..and then maybe I get to spend the night in jail. But no more than one night, once you had your hands on me.

Of course, IRL you'd twist my finger too quickly for me to respond, and it'll be my gentle wife who drops you with her own weapon. Either way works.

If you're actually serious, then please tell me where you live that you can walk up and assault people who offend your delicate sensibilities. I assume you're living in Iran, Texas or some other religious dictatorship?

Do I get a full refund? Because I'd really enjoy being able to start my life over with what I know now. :) Who wouldn't?

THIS, with a few exceptions. I sometimes treat politicians, pedophiles, murderers, Scientologists, telemarketers, arms dealers, astrologers, and Madison Avenue people with open contempt when they try to talk to me. If I initiate the conversation, though, I'll be polite even though all those people are far beneath me.

But, in general, I'm going to treat a black teenager and an old white guy the same, and that's usually how they treat me back.

/No matter who you are, it's none of my damn business that you ignored a McDonald's parking sign. If it bothers me, my role is to complain to the manager. If you parked in an HP spot or blocked me in, maybe I'll call the police myself and take pictures as your car gets towed, but I am not the fast food police.

My neighbor always parks his car so that there are two and a half spaces behind his car and three and a half spaces in front. There are no marked bays and you have a zone parking permit but he insists on parking directly in front of his house. To the foot. This means that sometimes I have to park two streets away because there is half a space in front of his car and half a space behind his car. When he went out recently I moved my van so that there were three spaces behind my van and four in front leaving him a space which meant he would have to have only half his car directly in front of his property but still be able to park. He rang on our bell, gave me a torrent of abuse and has taken to parking in his garage behind the house because if it can`t be exactly in front of his house he wont park on the street at all. This made me wonder why he didn`t park in his garage in the first place.

He is retired and acts worse than some teenagers.
