Have to agree. But that kid really knew how to push it to the limit without getting his hands dirty.

I'm not saying he's right or wrong in this scenario, but I think a lot of people would be a lot less douche-tastic in this world if a swift ass-kicking was a real possibility.

Just threatening shiathead teenagers never works.

You have to follow through.

yeah.. its funner to actually grab the finger they are giving you. Tell them calmly that why thank you for the offer of the finger, it certainly does look delicious and then ask them if they would like you to remove it right now, or if they would like to continue to use it before you accept their gracious offer.

( while twisting the finger in such a manner as to bend their wrist and force them to the ground )

Usually they ask for the finger back.

Never really understood the age-entitles-one-to-respect thing. Good job, you managed to be born in a certain year and, thus far, haven't died. Good job on that, but it's not really an accomplishment worthy of respect in and of itself.

While I totally sympathize with this guy getting angry with the kid, you just can't act like that and expect the situation not to escalate. This guy is lucky the kid had enough respect not to beat his ass down.

Considering your child-like attitude, I'd be willing to bet the things you don't understand could fill a library. Being older often implies being wiser, at least in a general sense, all other things being equal. Smart people understand that it makes sense, then, to offer some level of respect to people who have had the opportunity of more experience on the off-chance they may have something useful and valuable to teach you.

But you keep douching it up and see how well that benefits you.

I once had an "elder" try to teach me a "lesson" on how to drive. Apparently I cut him off in traffic (or so he said), so he found it appropriate to speed around me, slam on his brakes, and get out of the car to verbally berate me. It wasn't until he reached into my car window when shiat got real.

I held his hand long enough to roll the window up in order to hold his arm, then drove about 15 mph for about one block, then rolled it down and let him off the "respect is earned, not given" ride.

THIS!

Survival is not a virtue. Respect should come from something more than age. A guy who lives to be 100 by stepping on or figuratively eating everyone around him is not worthy any respect, much less more respect then someone younger then him

The type of person worthy of respect doesn't go around demanding it. They get it as a natural consequence of their persona, and when they don't get it, their respectable qualities preclude demanding, especially (or at least) in the manner this old guy did.

I don't think it's possible to qualify that sentence any more.

Being older often (but sometimes doesn't) implies (but doesn't require) being wiser, at least in a general sense (but not in any specific case), all other things being equal (but they never are).

And wise people don't start altercations with people over parking at McDonalds.

But older does not necessarily mean wiser. Wiser means wiser. We can respect wise people and not respect ignorant asses. Assuming all older people are wise and worthy of respect effectively means respecting assholes and morons purely because they managed to survive longer. Age is not a good proxy for wisdom as there's too much variation among individuals of the same age. It's better to respect wisdom directly.
