(BBC)   Here's a short bio on Malala Yousafzai, the 14 year old girl recovering after being shot in the head by the Taliban for campaigning to go to school. Go tell the apathetic whiny teenager in your life to get a grip and be thankful   (bbc.co.uk) divider line 128

jafiwam: That's also why the locals aren't going to shiat about it. It's just a girl, they'll trade a goat for another one if needed.

This is bigoted as fark, and you should be ashamed. It's not even funny a joke, you're just a miserable human being.

Not to mention that the premise that they don't care is utterly wrong. The shooting has created a lot of outrage and backlash against the Taliban in Pakistan. Seems the citizenry thinks that shooting teenage girls is a little beyond the pale.

Poor child. I fear this is not over for her.

The Taliban has vowed to finish the job...hopefully she's granted asylum somewhere or something.

used to it.

ronaprhys: spacelord321: Rereading your initial post you certainly did. My mistake. Obviously both options have blowback in the long run when considering international memory. I consider this a continuation of the initial problem, not a new problem to be dealt with at a later time.

That's definitely part of the cost equation. That's why I later posted that I couldn't come up with a situation where this might be warranted. Not saying that it couldn't happen - hell, it could be bad enough that the entire international community basically agrees to this. That, however, would have to be a seriously farked up situation.

Yep. I knew that you would understand that I understood that you understood. Understand? ; )

/BTW I didn't find your initial post useless, otherwise I would not have spent so much time ironing it out with you.

Is this a good time to bring up the Skepchick/Dawkins controversy?

Maybe we can negotiate with them, we'll stop protecting the growing of Heroin and you can let girls be educated.

Olympus Mons: Where are the normal people in these countries...this religion...seriously? If they can get all bent out of shape over a cartoon (like a bunch of 7 year old spoiled brats) or a crappy movie...where the fark is the outrage over something like this?

So much of this. Watching the news last night I couldn't help but think "Hey, they seem to know where the embassies are, but apparently no one knows where these Taliban a**holes live? Where's the stone throwing, fire setting, drag them into the street and beat them protesters?"

Not weird at all- using the Army would be a violation of the Posse Comitatus act.

You can ONLY use National Guard troops inside the United States.

Then where the hell are all the guardsmen I work with when they say they are deployed?! LIARS!!!

2KanZam: Then where the hell are all the guardsmen I work with when they say they are deployed?! LIARS!!!

No... he means you can only use the National Guard for civilian law enforcement purposes inside the U.S.... as in, you couldn't deploy the air force, for example, to quell a riot. The NG can be deployed overseas, but only the NG can be deployed domestically.

She's a hero. I hope she pulls through this.

I know the Taliban are a bunch of subhuman neanderthals hell bent on dragging the world back into a 6th century theocracy - but this was low, even for them.

Trying to kill a heroic child who's only crime was fighting for justice? I hope the flees of a thousand camels infest their pubic hair and devour them penis first.

Republicans don't like abortions and regulations over employers having to pay for birth control because - religion!

Taliban don't like girls getting an education because - religion!

Yes, you're so very different.

Good thing we went over there...to establish an Islamic Republic with a Sharia legal system to ensure that Miss Yousafzai and every other Afghan woman, no matter how much progress they can make on their own, will nonetheless be permanently screwed over for generations.

Why are we, as a secular republic, in the business of establishing Muslim theocracies?

Why, Santy Claus, why?

Within the cities, yes.

Go outside of the major urban areas in that country (particularly along the Pakistan-Afghan border) and jafiwam is more right than you might be aware of.

It's actually common practice to do so in those rare situations where a man is convicted of a crime against a woman. The discrepancies when it comes to sentencing are very indicative that Pakistan has a long way to go when it comes to human rights.

Jafiwam may have been being snarky, but sadly, it's closer to reality than most people realize... or want to admit.

To all you apologists out there.. YOU have it backwards.

In Islam.. about 10% are decent upstanding world citizens.
The other 90% want to kill everybody and force sharia law on everyone.

It's always when you correct someone else's grammar that you fail to notice the mistake in your own. Not trying to be a dick, just pointing out that that law (whoever it's named for) struck again.

Thanks for the cookies!

My apologies for the snark. Since I don't have the luxury of spell check, I try to be careful and it tics me off when an error slips through.

/I need to spring for a new phone, but stories like this always make my issues seem... insignificant. Besides, thanks to this phone, I do spell better (most of the time, anyway).

what_now: ShivaHVishnu: Oh no!! Republicans don't like abortions!! They want people to pay for their own birth control!! It's a war on women! Malala Yousafzai: what a real war on women looks like.

This is your argument? Because the GOP is not shooting little girls in the face, we can't complain about their treatment of women?

You're right. The Republican party is not as bad as the Taliban. Yet.

I think it is more that the Republicans don't want the government to pay for birth control. Not ban it, mind you. Just not pay for it. And somehow the feminists think that this is a war on women?

I am totally for government-funded birth control for every woman in this nation that wants it. However, to call it a war on women or say that government-funded birth control is a right is absolutely retarded.

Vegan Meat Popsicle: I really hope this is the turning point against these assholes in the region. The Taliban isn't exactly widely popular as it is, maybe this is what will finally push people over the edge and some righteous outrage can overwhelm their fear and lead a big backlash to push these useless twats back into their caves where they belong.

They managed to piss off Lashkar-e-Taiba with this shiat, which is pretty impressive. That means even other avowedly Islamist terrorists are saying they have gone too far. Everyone less extreme then that seems to be just appalled from everything I have read.
