Biden won. And I'll tell you why:

Speaking as an academic who specialized in International Security: Ryan knows far less then my freshmen about Iran, the Middle East and Central Asia. He comes across worse than my 19 year olds who are taking my classes for the first time.

That's what worries me. Idiots somehow believe that Ryan and Romney know anything about what's actually going on. Ryan's answers to the Afghanistan issues scares me and should scare anybody in the military or with a loved one in the military. He essentially, in his own ham handed way, said that we're sending troops to a variety of locations if the GOP assumes the Presidency.

Think about that for a second, Republican America. You profess to support the troops. How about supporting them not to die on more pointless wars. And yes, chickenhawks, Iran will work itself out without American boys and girls dying.

I agree. I don't have anywhere near the academic background that you speak of, but I've done a stint on the faculty at a foreign diplomatic academy, among other things, and I was just horrified at the naivety and ignorance Ryan displayed when talking about international relations. It's like he has no comprehension whatsoever about how the world actually works. He thinks the US can just run around and tell people what to do and they'll just jump because we're the US. I'm not quite sure that he's aware that there are international agreements governing how different states interact with each other on different issues.

coco ebert: The media is calling this a draw? Are you farking kidding me?

I watched the first Presidential debate from start to finish 8 days ago and came away with the impression that Obama came off stronger by presenting concrete and verifiable statements, while Romney came off as a weaselly douche brazenly contradicting not only his own statements for the last year or more (which themselves contradicted his own statements from years previous (which themselves contradicted his own statements ...(...(...(...)...)...))), but his own statements within that VERY SELF SAME debate, while in the meantime coming across as the kind of smarmy sales-douche that would drive me out of a furniture store.

Imagine my surprise the following day to learn the national media had declared it an unequivocal Romney SMACK DOWN - YEEEEAHHH! BABY!!!1! in the most epic Republican debate PWNAGE of all time - ALL TIME!!1

So. It's been decided this one will be peddled with every power of influence available to the media as - at worst - a tie?

Color me surprised.

Ryan went down to debate. He was lookin' for a soul to steal.
He was in a bind 'cause he was way behind, and he was willin' to make a deal.
When he came across this Biden sawin' on a fiddle and playin' it hot,
And Ryan jumped up on a hickory stump and said, "Biden, let me tell you what.

"I guess you didn't know it but I'm a fiddle player too.
And if you'd care to take a dare, I'll make a bet with you.
Now, you play pretty good fiddle, Biden, but give Ryan his due.
I'll bet a fiddle of gold against your soul, 'cause I think I'm better than you."

The Biden said, "My name's Joe, and it might be a sin.
But I'll take your bet, you're gonna regret, 'cause I'm the best that's ever been."

Joe, rosin up your bow and play your fiddle hard,
'Cause hell's broke loose in debate and Ryan deals the cards.
And if you win you get this shiny fiddle made of gold.
But if you lose, Ryan gets your soul.

Ryan opened up his case and he said, "I'll start this show."
And fire flew from his fingertips as he rosined up his bow.
And he pulled the bow across the strings and it made an evil hiss.
Then a band of talking heads joined in and it sounded somethin' like this:

::Fiddle interlude::

When Ryan finished, Joe said, "Well, you're pretty good, old son,
but sit down in that chair right there and let me show you how it's done."

Fire on the mountain. Run, boys, run.
Ryan's in the House of the Rising Sun.
Chicken in the bread pan pickin' out dough.
Granny, does your dog bite? No, child, no.

That Ryan bowed his head because he knew that he'd been beat,
And he laid that golden fiddle on the ground at Joe's feet.
Joe said, "Ryan, just come on back if you ever want to try again.
Cause I told you once, you son of a biatch, I'm the best that's ever been."

He played:

Fire on the mountain. Run, boys, run.
Ryan's in the House of the Rising Sun.
Chicken in the bread pan pickin' out dough.
Granny, will your dog bite? No, child, no.

The one big takeaway I had from this, and I really hope people noticed it, is thus...

Ryan criticized the Obama plan to let the Bush tax cuts expire on high-income earners because (paraphrasing) "Even if you did that, it's only $X billion, and that's not enough to do anything meaningful to the debt."

Not 5 minutes later, when pressed on how he and Romney are going to pay for tax cuts, said that he's going to close loopholes and dedcutions on high-income earners.

Um...if a tax increase on the wealthy isn't going to be enough money to affect the debt, how is elimitating some deductions on those same people going to be enough to affect the debt?

Either you can get enough money from the wealthy, or you can't. You don't get it both ways.

Delawheredad: Biden was completely wrong about the donut hole. Seniors and folks on disability ARE paying more this year then they were four years ago.. There are a lot of hurting people in the donut hole and Biden dismissed them with a laugh and a chuckle. I'm not saying that Ryan is any better or would do better but Biden was so wrong on his answer to that question that it was comedy gold.

Really? I'll give you that the 2008 donut hole was $4,370 dollars and this year it's up to a staggering $4,750 (we'll even ignore the automatic $250 rebate that exists today thanks to ACA that drops that actual donut hole to $4500). Of course that's ignoring the fact that back in 2008 the patient was responsible for 100% of drug costs from $896 to the $4370 cap was met. Do you know how much a patient is responsible for today Do you know that today, the coverage gap (the time prior to the donut hole where medicaid pays 75% of the drug costs) kicks in $2000 later ? So, the patient is receiving over $2000 dollars at 25% copay. And then, when a patient does hit the donut hole, the cost of drugs are 50%, but 100% of the pricing goes towards donut hole spending. In 2008 that same patient had to pay 100% of their drug costs throughout the donut hole. I'm sorry that you don't understand how medicaid works, but you are wrong, just plain wrong. Your girlfriend is roughly $2000 better off today than she was in 2008 and that's just leading up to the period before entering the donut hole. After that, she's paying roughly $1600 to get out of the gap. In 2008 she would have had to pay $3500 to get out of that same gap. I'm not sure why you would think that $3500

How do you know Biden won? Just look at the "both sides are bad" master race over at Politifact:

Paul Ryan:

Says the Obama administration spent taxpayer dollars on electric cars in Finland (and) windmills in China.

Says Obama promised unemployment would never go above 8 percent.
static.politifact.com.s3.amazonaws.com

Says President Barack Obama "already passed all these Obamacare taxes. About a dozen of them hit middle-income taxpayers."

static.politifact.com.s3.amazonaws.com

"$500 billion of the extension of the Bush tax cuts for the wealthy goes to 120,000 families."

Notice a pattern?

Politifact will do their damnedest to avoid calling factual statements from Democrats flat-out true, despite even admitting in their fact-checks that the statement is based in fact, just to appear "even-handed" and "fair", and even THEY cannot avoid calling Paul Ryan out on his total bullshiat.

Team Romney/Ryan just lie. They lie, avoid giving ANY details, and aren't even hiding the fact they are simply running on the !Obama platform.

If you let it go and try to be reasonable, respectful and respond when asked to, as Obama did you lose.
If you go after the lies, and make it clear that you aren't letting any BS slide by, then you are considered... mean, and you lose.

As far as I can tell the democrats can't win a debate as long as Ryan/Romney refuse to be truthful or detail oriented.

Do I understand that right? As long as Romney and Ryan don't stop lying, they somehow automagically win the debates?

Hey Mr. Academdick, how bout Vietnam and Kosovo? What party got us into those...Whose the only party to drop the big one...What party pulled us out of Vietnam.

Well, you come off as an asshole but I'll answer you question anyway. Kosovo started as a humanitarian operation that was supposed to be an EU operation. When the EU couldn't pull it off, they invoked NATO. The ethnic cleansing and genocide by the Serbs was seen as a good reason for Clinton to get involved. In fact, the whole operation is one of the things behind Responsibility to Protect, which allows intervention in cases of ethnic cleansing and genocide. So, unlike Iraq, Kosovo was justified by the international community.

Vietnam? That was a war against Communism. From Truman to Nixon the justification was fairly solid: fight the commies to prevent them spreading. I will remind you that Nixon ( though I like him) was the one that expanded the war in it's last stages to Laos and Cambodia. Which was a really bad PR move. The whole war was a FUBAR from day one. But unlike Iran the reasoning was certainly more solid, even after we utterly lost the ability to figure exactly what we were fighting for.

So, yes, Billy, Democrats enter wars too. But it's 2012 and Romney and Ryan are pretty dead set on stirring the pot with Iran in a very public way that involves American ground forces. You've never read about the Iran-Iraq war? The one in the '80s? Where Reagan supported Saddam? You should. Then you'll see why invading Iran is a really, really, really bad idea. Another point I'll make is the "rally 'round the flag effect", which means that Iranians who oppose the regime will very likely fight for it in case of invasion.

Does that answer your question? Oh, and don't call me names. I know you're only 18, but didn't your parents teach you to be polite?

Erin Burnett tweeted about some poll where most Americans supposedly disliked this debate because the candidates were "negative" and "fighting." When did Americans become such pussies? That wasn't fighting. Fghting is calling each other names and suggesting scurrilous things about the oponent's character. there was none of that last night.

And I can't stand how everyone says they want information, yet when candidates decide they're not going to sit back and let the information flow be one-sided, all of a sudden it's "negative." Yo, idiots, counter-points aren't negative.

Either that's a stupid poll or it polled some pretty stupid Americans. If it truly represents the views of most Americans, I think Sam Adams would just jump off a bridge. What a bunch of prima donnas.

Absolutely correct. But you can't accept the catholic churches position on abortion and want it to be legal either.

Sure you can - by checking your subjective religion at the door of public service. Public office is supposed to be secular by design, and let individuals choose what they will or will not do based on their personal beliefs.

IMO, public officials of any kind who can't do their job without religion getting in their way need to step aside and let someone else do the job properly.

Well, the obvious trolls like randomjsa and ten lbs. always phrase things in a way that they are not personally attacking another user, merely the ideas. They never go out of character, or seem to get pissed off no matter how thoroughly their line of reasoning is. This makes it apparent that they don't actually believe what they are saying, but are here to generate responses.

Personally, I feel that Drew would have no need of paying people to do this. Although most farkers are left-leaning, we can engender real discussion of issues without the need of someone else echoing Republican talking points. Sure, it does get the clicks up, and every time someone posts a reply, the hit counter clicks over, but this is miniscule compared to the hits that people generate from being funny.

What I'm trying to say is that it would be a rather silly waste of money for Drew to pay people to foster dialogue in the Politics tab by trolling. He would be better off paying people to create funny and entertaining content within the threads. That would get more page views than troll comments.

i completely agree. trolls go on ignore... people with intriguing comments even if i don't agree with them get highlighted.

Please explain the plan to stabilize the Middle East that Ryan outlined during the debate. He did not say one word about a plan to stabilize the Middle East. He simply criticized the Administration on Afghanistan, Libya, Syria, and Iran. But Ryan did not lay out even a paragraph of his own or Mitt's own plan as to what will bring peace to the Middle East.

soy_bomb: When your hope for a comeback relies on Joe Biden, its time to throw in the towel.

I know I wont be the only one responding to the troll so here goes.

We all know that Biden is a gaff machine. But those of us who actually pay attention to his history know that Biden CAN destroy Ryan in a debate. farking Biden is magic when he brings his A-Game, he gently debated Palin, he had to. If he had destroyed her he would have looked like a bully. Biden can rape Ryan on that stage, even Ryans handlers know it. Hell Ryans given the VP all the ammo he needs to hang him with.

.......but Biden has to want to do it. All of the Left at this moment, are honestly wondering if Biden and Obama even want to win. Tonight that question gets answered.

This is not a bookmark for the new meme pics.

In all seriousness, I have to agree with whoever said this up-thread: The Right will spin this as a win for Ryan even if he shows up in a backwards hat and making ducklips. The Left will spin a win for Joe Biden if he doesn't swallow his own tongue. That being said, I am hoping for Joe to knock this out of the park. I want him to mop the floor with Ryan, as Ryan has absolutely no place as a congressman, much less a Vice-President.

This is just for the final 6% of the undecideds who apparently haven't been paying attention to anything except what they catch on the 6PM news. That the future of the country depends on people who only care about the future for a month every four years is mind-boggling.

My predictions on the night:

1. Ryan will try to use lots of numbers. He'll gloss them quickly, Biden will challenge him, and the fact-checkers will go ballistic, but most people won't care.
2. Biden will attack Ryan heavily. He'll respond as vaguely as possible.
3. Ryan will be almost as buttoned down as Obama was the other night, since he doesn't need a win right now. He will play to not lose.
4. Biden won't make any gaffes, but the right will dig deep and manufacture 2 or 3 anyway.
5. Biden will win, but the margin won't be as big as it was for the 1st Presidential debate, and even if it is, the right won't care.
6. If Biden wins, the polls will hold where they are now, and everything will pause until the next Presidential debate. If Biden loses, Obama is in deep, deep trouble.

FarkGrudge: This is a funny thread. So many claiming such a dramatic and overwhelming Biden victory...did we watch the same debate? I honestly felt a measure of embarrassment that Biden is our current VP with how he conducted himself--he's the first-in-line to be the face of this country?

Virtually every poll I've read today either has it close or Ryan as the "winner." In short, Republicans thought Ryan won, and Democrats thought Biden won.

Biden absolutely crushed Ryan on all points, going by everyone's comments in this thread, which I read in full last night. Ryan lied about everything, and got called on it again and again.

This is not opinion.

Perhaps the clearest indication of who won and lost the VP debate came quickly on the heels of the event itself: the Democratic post-debate message was that Joe Biden scored a clear win; the Republican message was that Joe Biden was too mean to Paul Ryan. The former is a boast of success; the latter is an excuse for failure.

I thought Biden mopped the floor with the little Randroid. It wasn't even close. Being unable to mention a single loophole, being cavalier about sending more Americans to die in Afghanistan with no recognition of the mission (training and handing it over to the locals), and basically not offering a single specific the whole debate while your opponent clowns you with contradictory specifics equals a loss.

No ifs, ands, or buts. Biden took it. And it actually got me a bit excited for the Dems, even if I know they'll let me down as soon as they an snatch defeat from the jaws of victory, as is their custom...

Here are the top ten worst lies told by Biden during the debate:

This is a very well thought-out list you have. Naturally, some of the things you list I have problems with, some I agree with.

What I would like to now see you do is to be realistic and attempt to view things in a bipartisan way. Let's see a list of top 10 worst lies told by Ryan during the debate.

And if you even attempt to say that he didn't say any falsehoods, or you can't even come up with 10, then I'll know you're simply a blind, partisan hack who really doesn't believe what he says.

BIDEN: ... we turned it over to the Afghan troops we trained. No one got pulled out that didn't get filled in by trained Afghan personnel. And he's -- he's conflating two issues. The fighting season that Petraeus was talking about and former -- and Admiral Mullen was the fighting season this spring. That's what he was talking about. We did not -- we did not pull them out.

RYAN: They're still coming into Zabul, to Kunar, to all of these areas, but we are sending fewer people to the front to fight them. And that's...

BIDEN: That's right, because that's the Afghan responsibility. We've trained them.

RYAN: Not in the east.

RADDATZ: Let's move -- let's move to another war.

BIDEN: Not in the east?

RYAN: R.C. East -- R.C. East...

BIDEN: R.C. East is the most dangerous place in the world.

RYAN: That's right. That's why we don't want to send fewer people to the...

BIDEN: That's -- that's why we should send Americans in to do the job, instead of the -- you'd rather Americans be going in doing the job instead of the trainees?

Really? When our embassies were getting hit on Bush Jr.'s watch (in which 60 Americans died during 12 different attacks), Sean Hannity and his ilk were calling it "growing pains for young democracies" that we needed to weather. He also said that Bush would be hailed as some sort of glorious genius for bringing democracy to the Middle East.

Obama handled the Libya thing poorly. There's no doubt about this.

But attacks on our embassies in volatile parts of the world are not new concepts.

Ryan would have more of a leg to stand on if the Republicans hadn't: A. Blocked the State departments funding request for additional security and B) hadn't exposed to the whole world that there was a CIA base right there as well, basically destroying operational security to try and score a few political points.

All I can say is that I am disgusted at CNN for manipulating data for the sake of generating "It's a dead heat!" ratings.

As it's been pointed out, but bears repeating, at the bottom of that Ryan 48, Biden 44 CNN poll, in TINY print:

"SPECIAL NOTE OF CAUTION #2: The sample of debate-watchers in this poll were 31% Democratic and 33% Republican. That indicates that the sample of debate watchers is about eight points more Republican than an average CNN poll of all Americans, so the respondents were more Republican than the general public."

So, wipe out that 8 percent point margin and split it evenly, even though Biden definitely kicked Ryan's ass.

Biden - 48%, Ryan - 44%.

Still a statistical dead heat but the headline would be completely changed.

What a farce we've become.

/And I don't even really care for both candidates at this point.

These trolls just do it for the lulz. I'm not sure exactly what lulz it generates to just say stupid sh*t to random strangers on the Internet that are attempting to have a rational discussion (or what passes for one around here), but it obviously tickles their jubblies or whatever.

I don't think it's the money as much as it is institutionalization of what these old white men feel women's role in society should be. Think about the number of Islamic women who like wearing the beekeeper suits, and being subservient to their men. It's what their society has taught them is the measure of themselves as women.

There's also the fact that they believe themselves to be the exception to the rule - if they ever needed an abortion, it would be a special circumstance, and a tragedy, but they would want the opportunity to choose because they are intelligent enough to make this decision on their own, unlike all those liberal women who use abortion as a form of birth control.

"I'm politically independent and not really interested, in this stuff, but if I were Ryan I would have punched this douche out at least three times already."

He's the same guy who's never uttered a peep about the GOP trading on "support the troops" bullshiat in the entire 20+ years I've known him, yet when the Democrats were making hay about the GOP shutting down the veteran's job bill, he posted a really indignant rant about how:

He's a good guy and I love him, but his fake independent bullshiat gets tedious... even moreso because the very second you start to take issue with one of his posts, he feints and says something like "facebook isn't really about the political stuff for me, man. Cpl.D: CNN not only said the debate was a draw, but put Ryan a few points ahead. What the hell? I never really put much trust in CNN, but goddamn. Now I'm looking at them like another Fox News.

CNN has become a total joke. Their ratings are plummeting, so they're trying to be the "bipartisan" news source, which means spinning absolutely everything to the center. It's the most spineless path possible, and in a way, it makes them more full of shiat than either side.

He comes across to me as that lone 24-year-old college Republican idiot who coasts by in classes with C-'s because the professors are so farking tired of seeing him in class after class, they give them the pass just to get them the hell out of the place. Then he proceeds to say patently idiotic, ridiculous, counterfactual and irrelevant shiat that's so egregiously bad it gobsmacks the logic straight out of the class' head and the entire class has to be rebooted for it.

Then they go on to claim that since they're passing the class, they know better than everyone else, and that they'd get perfect grades if the teacher wasn't a liebrul who's more interested in dimorat indoctrination for liebrul elitist faculty, who's trying to suppress his free speech.

The real fascinating thing is that the international version of CNN still has people on who sound intelligent.

Whereas CNN domestic seems to go after the lowest common denominator.

RevMercutio: ongbok: lemurs: The Obama campaign knows they were too civil and respectful of the opposition in the first presidential debate, but this shows won't make the same mistake going forward.

I think it was more that Obama has 2 more debates with Romney, so in the first one he laid back and let Romney run off at the mouth with lies so that in the time after the debate and before the VP debate and his next debate they could hammer Romney on his lies with campaign ads. Now Biden on the other hand has only one debate with Ryan, so they sent him out swinging for the fences and they had Romney's campaign lies to back him.

It was also based entirely on the economy, where Obama is vulnerable.

yes because creating 5 million jobs despite the worst recession in history and complete obstruction from the GOP, doubling the stock market, rescuing GM and ending the wars are bad news for Obama.

It's not about changing votes at this stage. It's about getting people to show up to vote. The Dems started to lose the "voter enthusiasm" battle this past week. There first priority tonight was to rally their base and show that their ticket still has a lot of fight left to dish out. MISSION ACCOMPLISHED.

Animatronik: Biden did a good job smirking, interrupting, and attempting to explain how debt-fueled spending policies help the middle class (at least until we go broke).
Which was good enough for second place. good job, Joe

Ryan did a good job whining like a little biatch about how Obama said that "if you can't run on your record, then convince people to run away from the other guy."

And then he proceeded to not run on their record and tried to convince people to run away from the other guy.

You know you can talk about the Democrats making excuses for Obama, Obama was trying to be polite, Romney was completely changed his policies, Romney was aggressive and loud... But you know what, the Dems admitted it was a loss. This shiat about 'draw' is just so... sad.

Own it. Say Biden was disrespectful and rude, but accept that Ryan lost.

Call him interrupting and such but that whole 4 minute section for each topic was supposed to be a back and forth :P I caught Biden staring at the clock many times when it was a "Ryan-only" section waiting for it to end. He still interrupted, the smiles were excessive, but he followed the rules more than he's being given credit for :P

I'm a bit wary of factcheckers that are trying to get their checks in first. I'd rather they take the time to do it right.

You'd think CNN would learn a thing or two after their Obamacare decision flub. CNN has been leaning right for years, but it's not natural, it's intentional so they shimmer a lot if you know what I mean.

For those who are joining us late, one statement pretty much sums up the debate:

Biden: "If you notice, he (Ryan) never answers the question".

But that's apparently irrelevant because Biden laughed to much and interrupted Ryan's lies too often.
