Yeah; you should definetly tell the United States where to look for your little file sharing system. They'll never find it that way!

It's getting to the point that; you'd need to base your file sharing operation in china or maybe on the moon for it not to get taken down.

Also: Attention Whore vs. Soul-sucking companies? I'm gonna have to side with the Attention whore. RIAA and the MPAA can suck it.

Piracy is not theft, its copyright infringement, they are two completely different things.

Only by semantics, you are getting something for free, that you would normally have to pay for, that's stealing.

No it's not, it's making a copy. In order to steal something you have to take something away.

You are taking away potential revenues from the artist.

I wouldn't of bought it anyway, so there is no revenues lost. Besides, i am doing the entertainment business a favor, i would of never purchased my last CDs if it wasn't for downloading a few of their songs on the internet.

It doesn't matter whether you would of purchased it or not. You can't afford a Ferrari, so you wouldn't have purchased that anyways, so would you steal a car?

What don't you understand?? Copying is not theft. If you're asking me if I could copy a Ferrari, you're god dam right I would copy a Ferrari. I would copy Ferraris for everyone I knew!

So you would steal for your friends and family at someone elses loss?

You don't farking get it, i'm not talking to you anymore. You can't understand the difference between two simple english words, so you obviously aren't smart enough to converse with. farking moran.

Yes and no...

Yes, artists like Lady Gaga are hurt overall because they are constantly in the spotlight, don't need the additional exposure and sharing means they don't get their tiny cut of the CD sales (tiny cuts add up).

No, artists like Poco Harem (or fill in the blank band who had hits in the 70s or 80s that have since dropped off the radar) haven't released anything in well...decades and if they have I've not heard about it, which tells you they are WAY underexposed. Sharing doesn't hurt them, if anything it creates awareness and that leads to some additional sales of their CDs (assuming you can get the copyright holder to get off their dead ass and re-release them...another issue) and more fans at the band's concerts--assuming they are still touring of course.

2012-10-11 12:26:45 PM

jfivealive: You are taking away potential revenues from the artist.

You countered this with the traditional "I wasn't going to buy it otherwise". I want to point out a much less common response.

If taking away potential revenue from the artist is stealing, then conventional theft (where you shoplift a CD or DVD off a shelf and walk out of the store with it) must be some sort of "double-stealing". Because in conventional theft, you are taking a physical item that is property of the store AND you are taking potential revenue away, too (the revenue the store would have gotten if you had paid for the item).

Either piracy is not stealing and conventional theft is stealing.
OR
Piracy is stealing and conventional theft is double-stealing.

Either way, piracy is not the same as theft.

tl;dr:

This message is not intended to imply that I think piracy is morally acceptable.

If you're not in the U.S. and not a citizen of the U.S. then you shouldn't have to give a shiat what U.S. law is. What's the point of having different sovereign countries if you can't completely ignore the ones you don't choose to live in.

Actually, piracy would be a subset of theft. You were thinking of larceny (or the equivalent tort, conversion), which would be completely different things.
