This is part of the same mentality that can shut down a major city with a lite brite.
This is why I have a hard time calling us "the home of the brave."

Most universities in the US no longer have pubs on campus. I went to San Diego State University and graduated about 10 years ago and we were one of the only schools that still had one on campus. You had to get a wristband once you proved you were 21 and you could buy the alcohol but there was a lot of passing drinks to underage students as well. I'm not sure if it's still open as I haven't been on campus for many years now.

The problem is that the legal age of drinking in US is 21 thus more than half of the college population cannot drink legally. Add to that the fact that a lot of students drive to school and it's just a lawsuit waiting to happen thus even if the pubs would be allowed not too many people would try to open one because of the possible lawsuits.

I was taken by my conservative Catholic grade school to see Sweeney Todd when I was around 10 years old. It didn't make me want to kill people and make them into meat pies. Now some farking college kids can't handle a farking Nintendo zapper because they think it might upset someone and start a campus shooting or something?!

When do we stop policing what MIGHT happen? When do we stop parenting adults? When did we start to take responsibility away from someone rather than making them responsible for their own actions?

George Carlin had it right...the pussification of America is well represented here.

I believe the point is something like this:

While we understand why you want to use an image of a Zapper, there are international students around who may not know what the image is and wonder why your group has a picture of a gun.

Just trying to see it from a multicultural perspective

2012-10-11 11:31:08 AM
I'm reminded of my college's gun rules.

Register it, check it into there gun locker in the dorm, check it out when you want to use it. There was even an indoor range at the SDC (the big gym complex).

I took their marksmanship class that was offered as a PE course. The university had asked the instructor no longer use human silhouette targets though.

Ahh, student associations. Practically the only thing in college that I would want to completely destroy. Every other year, there was a story that came out about how the previous administration mismanaged funds, received money through illegitimate means, or were completely incompetent. And if you somehow managed to cross them or your org was an obstacle for their schemes, then be ready to be attacked at all angles.

Do universities in the U.S. not have pubs on campus? The UofA (Alberta) has at least 3 (that I know of)

UVA has at least one bar in Newcomb Hall (the student union building) as well as sponsoring "graduate happy hour" on grounds. Well, it did 20 years ago when I was there. :(

And yet the saddest part of this story is that you keep up with porn star birthdays.

I was thinking something similar except I was thinking what a huge idiot you'd have to be to be so narrow-mindedly focused on video gaming to not think hey maybe a picture of a gun, any gun, along with beer on a university poster is probably not the most appropriate thing in the world.

i enjoy the reasoning behind this from the student association that vetted the poster:

"Michael MacDonell, the student association's vice-president of university affairs, said the policy does not allow any poster to be placed around campus that could damage the reputation of the university community."

because now their knee jerk reaction to this makes them come across as tight-arse fools who can't be bothered to do even 5 minutes of research or engage in dialogue with the students unless publically shamed. so banning this poster has actually done exactly the opposite of their stated goals.

It certainly isn't inappropriate either. Just because you let yourself be manipulated into a life of fear by "news" channels doesn't mean every one is. The reality of the situation is that violence in the US(yes I RTFA, I don't know Canada's stats) is at an all-time low and so is the drinking rate of people. College students are adults, they're smart enough to know a picture of a gun isn't going to condone a shooting, or incite violence. The picture of beer is also OKAY, responsible drinking hurts nobody. Just because you like to go all slippery slope on everything doesn't mean everyone else does.

CSB: I designed the t-shirt for the psych department at my school one year, and I was told it had to be "edited" due to the fact that it contained a drug reference, which was not allowed. The reference? Freud's cigar. When they told me they would be changing it, I figured they would just remove his whole hand from the image (would have been easy and wouldn't have looked too weird). But instead, they made the cigar into a pencil. So it ended up looking kind of dumb, all because a drawing of Freud's cigar violated some kind of university anti-drug rule. But apparently they were okay with the previous year's shirt, which had a list of the top 10 reasons to major in psychology; #8 of which was "Where else can you get a PhD in Sex & Drugs."

/csb

Censoring a poster for a drawing of a fake gun (not even a photo, not even of a real gun) is just dumb. It's not like it was depicted firing at someone. I don't see how this poster as a whole could be interpreted as an endorsement of violence, even if you did not understand English.

And... are you in college? Duck Hunt came out in 1985 or 86. The average freshman was BORN in 1994. (God I feel old as I type that). By the time they were old enough to play games, the standard systems were the Nintendo 64 or Gamecube and the Playstation or PS2 (and possibly XBOX). You're 30 or almost 30. Duck Hunt is timeless the same way that Steamboat Willie is a timeless cartoon... it's trotted out by us olds as a relic of a "purer time," but it's not in the standard pop culture repertoire. These kids may have seen a video of Duck Hunt on YouTube or heard some reference to it in older pop culture, but it's doubtful that many of them have seen an NES in actual working order. Seriously, I haven't seen an actual NES (vs. a clone) and cartridge that don't skip or fail in about a decade.

Pac-Man and Super Mario Bros. are timeless - you can upgrade the graphics a bit and they still play as well today as they did 25-30 years ago. Duck Hunt relies on two pieces of thoroughly obsolete proprietary hardware.

I'm sure a few of them had an older brother or sister that had an old NES that still worked lying around somewhere, but most of them started gaming after the 16-bit era.

No, but I was in college from 01-06. Duck Hunt is timeless.

My 2600, NES, SNES, N64 all still work.

My SNES still works. If your NES works, you either live in a cleanroom, have a late-market model (the top-loaders had better design, or you're a wizard. I'm not saying it's impossible that these kids have played Duck Hunt. I'm saying it's unlikely.

Great Janitor: Xanlexian: Great Janitor:

Even if someone had never seen a Nintendo zapper, it is in a pic with another classic game controller, it is bright orange, you'd have to be an idiot to think it was a real gun and a gigantic pussy to see a pic of a gun and get offended by it or complain about it.

Cops can't tell the difference. That's what matters.

Then don't point one at a cop!

Shouldn't draw one on a poster, either!

So we should blame the victims of a car crash for rubberneckers and the traffic slowdown?

The Victims? No. The douche that wasn't paying attention and caused it...YES!

bullshiat, I used to keep my dorm room door open while I played Duck Hunt and all kinds of people would stop and play.

No, it's been alternatively kept in a basement closet and an un-insulated attic. But every time I turn it on, it does work. Aside from temp extremes though, I've never been rough on my electronics.

Maybe you're lucky. Mine is a brick, and I kept it clean and free from abuse for 20 years.

I had an Xbox brick. One day the HDD just decided that the platters should bang into each other as it spun up.

kwame: Great Janitor: When I was in college I used to post the names and dates of porn stars who had birthdays that week onto my dorm room door. I was forced to stop it because the Jehovas Witness student complained about the porn star list. No pics, just names and birthdays.

And yet the saddest part of this story is that you keep up with porn star birthdays.

And you are surprised why? He went to college but can only work as a Janitor, a great one at that but still just a janitor.

hasn't this guy been blamed for enough...oh. you said Batman.

Also, FTFA "...campus pub..."? - how does anyone from that school graduate?

Do universities in the U.S. not have pubs on campus? The UofA (Alberta) has at least 3 (that I know of)

Mine didn't, a different SMU (Dallas, TX). And not at any other TX University that I can think of. I've also worked at Ole Miss and San Diego State no pubs on those campuses either.

San Diego State used to have an on-campus pub. Good times...good times

Did you have the gun too? It was a lot more real looking than the silly NES thing the young'uns are using.

UVA has at least one bar in Newcomb Hall (the student union building) as well as sponsoring "graduate happy hour" on grounds. Well, it did 20 years ago when I was there. :(

The University of Wisconsin in Madison had an absolutely stellar on-campus bar the last time I was there, which was .... longer ago than I want to admit. Really awesome place to have a few beers after conferencing all day though.

kwame: Callous: How do we know it's not real a real laser blaster and that Buck Rodgers didn't find his way back and bring it with him?

Following that logic, since a picture of a real AK-47 isn't an ACTUAL AK-47 but just a picture of one, it should be fine too.

I agree, it's just a picture.

It was not so long ago that the crazy shoe was on the left foot.

I guess colleges still have quite a few femi-nazis and their neutered male lapdogs running around.

Jirafa: CSB: I designed the t-shirt for the psych department at my school one year, and I was told it had to be "edited" due to the fact that it contained a drug reference, which was not allowed.

I thought it was a penis.

Son of Thunder: skrame: give me doughnuts: The "Sweeney Todd" poster was worse. The guy on it was brandishing a dangerous weapon.

You could also make a case for Hamlet (holding a human skull). I'm not sure about the karate club, since no weapons would be involved there.

Oh, there will be weapons at the Karate Club...

MY FISTS.

Aaaaaaaah!

I had a teacher in high school that when he saw a student starting to doze off, he'd casually walk around to that student's desk, jump and yell "HITE!!!" while making chopping motions with his hands. Then he'd blow the tips of his fingers and say "registered deadly weapons with the local police department" and then go back to teaching.

That guy was cool.
