FTA: Michael MacDonell, the student association's vice-president of university affairs, said the policy does not allow any poster to be placed around campus that could damage the reputation of the university community.

WTF does that mean?

kwame: Great Janitor: When I was in college I used to post the names and dates of porn stars who had birthdays that week onto my dorm room door. I was forced to stop it because the Jehovas Witness student complained about the porn star list. No pics, just names and birthdays.

And yet the saddest part of this story is that you keep up with porn star birthdays.

Look, its October 11th, so if I want to wish Julie Ryan, Angel Vasquez, Monica Mattos, Paige Turner, Regina Ice, Amanda, Juliya Sunrise, Brianna Blaze, Priscila Mel, Tatiana, Bijou, Artiste Styles, and Chandler Fay Happy Birthday, I will and there's nothing sad about it, cause its happy birthday!

WTF are they going to do this Halloween? Lockdown the campus because of one of these?

Lame. How times have changed. The university I went to had a rifle team back in the day, gone by the 70's I think. ROTC still does drills with dummy guns as far as I know. They do announce gun salutes the day before so no one panics.

2012-10-11 11:13:59 AM

Whodat: Simple solution, find out who made the decision, publish their names and ridicule them openly, loudly and often. People that stupid shouldn't be employed by a center of learning.

If by employed you main paying the University tuition and attending classes then yes, I agree those members of the STUDENT ASSOCIATION are too stupid to be employed by that center of learning.

Also banned by university:

-- Photo shoots
-- Chewing gum (too close to gun)
-- Bullet trains
-- Triggerfish
-- Mortarboards (graduates were soft beanies with felt propellers)
-- Britney Spears
-- BB King (can put out an eye)
-- Remington Steele
-- Anyone from Smith College carrying Wesson oil

Great Janitor: We are also home of the quite majority who recognizes a toy gun and doesn't bother each other with nonsense and loud cowardly minority. It probably wasn't hundreds of complainers, but ONE jackass who saw the zapper and complained.

I love the part where you simply assume that everybody but one person knows that's a video game controller and not a picture of a gun.

Do universities in the U.S. not have pubs on campus? The UofA (Alberta) has at least 3 (that I know of)

wildcardjack: I saw "SMU" and thought "Most of the people at SMU already have concealed carry permits."

Then I realized it was a different SMU. Not the one getting the George Bush presidential bookshelf.

Same with me. I saw SMU and thought "Aren't most people in Texas issued a gun at birth and all people who relocated to Texas are required by law to purchase one within 90 days of moving there?"

Then I saw it was St. Mary's and thought "It figures. What a bunch of freakin Mary's."

FTFA: "I was, like, you know, it does look like a gun and anybody who doesn't understand it might take it wrong.

No, they really wouldn't. But, supposing you're right, those are the kind of people who need a few months of electroshock therapy to cure them of their delusions.

Even if someone had never seen a Nintendo zapper, it is in a pic with another classic game controller, it is bright orange, you'd have to be an idiot to think it was a real gun and a gigantic pussy to see a pic of a gun and get offended by it or complain about it.

Most universities in the US no longer have pubs on campus. I went to San Diego State University and graduated about 10 years ago and we were one of the only schools that still had one on campus. You had to get a wristband once you proved you were 21 and you could buy the alcohol but there was a lot of passing drinks to underage students as well. I'm not sure if it's still open as I haven't been on campus for many years now.

The problem is that the legal age of drinking in US is 21 thus more than half of the college population cannot drink legally. Add to that the fact that a lot of students drive to school and it's just a lawsuit waiting to happen thus even if the pubs would be allowed not too many people would try to open one because of the possible lawsuits.

Well, here in Alberta, 99% of the students are legal to drink, so why not have pubs? (Legal age is 18)

I was taken by my conservative Catholic grade school to see Sweeney Todd when I was around 10 years old. It didn't make me want to kill people and make them into meat pies. Now some farking college kids can't handle a farking Nintendo zapper because they think it might upset someone and start a campus shooting or something?!

When do we stop policing what MIGHT happen? When do we stop parenting adults? When did we start to take responsibility away from someone rather than making them responsible for their own actions?

George Carlin had it right...the pussification of America is well represented here.

I believe the point is something like this:

While we understand why you want to use an image of a Zapper, there are international students around who may not know what the image is and wonder why your group has a picture of a gun.

Just trying to see it from a multicultural perspective

I'm reminded of my college's gun rules.

Register it, check it into there gun locker in the dorm, check it out when you want to use it. There was even an indoor range at the SDC (the big gym complex).

I took their marksmanship class that was offered as a PE course. The university had asked the instructor no longer use human silhouette targets though.

2012-10-11 11:31:15 AM
Ahh, student associations. Practically the only thing in college that I would want to completely destroy. Every other year, there was a story that came out about how the previous administration mismanaged funds, received money through illegitimate means, or were completely incompetent. And if you somehow managed to cross them or your org was an obstacle for their schemes, then be ready to be attacked at all angles.

I was thinking something similar except I was thinking what a huge idiot you'd have to be to be so narrow-mindedly focused on video gaming to not think hey maybe a picture of a gun, any gun, along with beer on a university poster is probably not the most appropriate thing in the world.
