I guess the school/police department is lucky that the "active shooter" didn't get shot by an active patriot.

What stuff like this proves beyond a shadow of a doubt is that, faced with an active shooter, people PANIC. They run, hide, piss their pants, and generally freak out. They do not calmly and coolly band together and overpower their attackers, draw their legal or illegal concealed weapons and kill them, or anything else that ITGs imagine they will do in active-shooter situations.

Maybe someday people will begin to realize that that kind of shiat only happens in movies.

The risk that a CHL holder would have iced the "shooter" is very real and should have been considered. Just because the law says CHLs aren't supposed to carry on campus, I'll guarantee you that some do.

However, there is also something to the theory of inoculating people to the sensation of extreme stress. Ooh, poor little snowflake princess got a little panicked and upset. Okay, that's a normal and understandable reaction. But, now that she knows what that fear feels like, we can talk about some strategies to employ if this had been a real situation.

Getting scared is not the end of the world and should not require long-term counseling, but it probably will for some of these kids.

If I planned to shoot up a campus, I would do it when everyone expects "just a drill." Advance notice of such drills would be really handy.

Millennium: NumberFiveIsAlive: While I understand the need to notify people of a pending exercise or drill, I find that when you do people tend to act in ways that defeat the teaching portion of the exercise. For example, got a shooter on the loose and you're looking for him? You'll find him, surrounded by morons talking to him and asking him questions like "what's it like being hunted?" and "want to take a picture with me holding that gun?"

There's something to be said here. Causing a panic without good reason is a Very Bad Thing, but there does exist a bona fide need to train law enforcement in crowded, panicked situations. I don't think this particular case struck a very good balance, but perhaps it is time to discuss what a good balance would really be.

Hire actors.

Sometimes I question my sanity, but I was able to parse this headline with no difficulty. Am I just not seeing the problem?
