He's playing Zod in the upcoming Superman movie, so maybe he'll get some mainstream attention after that. Or the movie will be a colossal bomb and sink his career.

It threw me for a loop the first time I saw Stephen Graham lose his cool as Capone - but he is just one member of an amazing ensemble on Boardwalk Empire.

Take Shelter is on my to-watch list, and I thought his turn as the villainous cop in Premium Rush was perfect. Can't wait to see what his future holds.

Agreed. I have been a fan of Buscemi since Reservoir Dogs - he is one of my favorite actors, and it is great to see him get the appreciation that he deserves.

Pretty much the opposite of Paz de la Huerta, who had a rockin' body, paired with a serious case of butterface.

Lots of folks that had never heard of Hugh Laurie before "House" did the same double-take.

I've been laughing at him since "Fry & Laurie" and "BlackAdder", though, so I didn't.

I saw stills of him in "The Runaways" and with his band. Serious acting chips to pull off Van Doren/Mueller.

British (or Australian) actors doing a pretty flawless generic American are common enough now, but doing some local or ethnic accent well is quite a bit rarer. Heck, most American actors couldn't do that (see e.g. True Blood).

I felt the same way about a lot of the guys on "The Wire." McNulty & Stringer Bell were English, and Carcetti was Irish. It was so...jarring.

I would think a generic American accent would be a lot harder than doing a regional accent, since you have to make the accent neutral. For example, look at all of the English actors who are doing a southern accent on The Walking Dead.

Yea but the pacing is terrible. There's 5 minutes of that and 55 minutes of boring ass dialogue. I watched Season 1 that was enough for me.

2012-10-11 01:19:29 PM
I'm enjoying the new season, but I feel a little conflicted about Nucky's new-found ruthlessness. What made him such an interesting character to me was that he used his wits and savvy to outmaneuver his enemies. Now he just kills them.

I dunno...maybe they're just being truthful to the time period and this is the natural evolution of Nucky's character. But for some reason, Arnold Rothstein comes across much more powerful than Nucky because he doesn't get his hands dirty. Nucky's basically a thug now. A smart one for sure, but still a thug. A guy like Capone uses brute force because that's all he knows. Nucky is better than that, or so I thought.

I'm not sure what to think of this show ... sometimes the writing is great, other times it's mind numbingly stupid. Two things have been consistent: lots of skin for no apparent reason, and swift, blinding violence at a moment's notice. I left the room to turn off a hallway light, and next thing I know, somebody's on the ground engulfed in flames; slow panning shot of a busy street outside of a bar, then Al Capone is kicking some poor bastard's kidney's through his spine.

But I'll keep watching it for those two reasons ... writing be damned!

Really? You had no suspicion that the sheriff was going to be burned alive as soon as he said "it's flammable"? Also any scene with the new Italian mug has been set up to think he will murder anyone, anywhere, anytime.

It was pretty obvious that after Capone's issue with his kid being beaten up, he was going to tear someone three new assholes for beating up his tubby friend.

Well, the real Nucky Thompson went to jail ten years after this current season for tax evasion. Maybe over the next few seasons we'll see him getting more and more stressed and power hungry over the next few seasons (they already renewed for Season 4), so he'll get more and more murdery

That was last season, if it is a spoiler to you, you don't belong in this thread.

That being said, it really pissed me off that they spent so much time developing that character then wrote themselves into a corner and had to off him. If they kill off the tinman or don't give him more screen time, I'm out.

They wrote the first two seasons like they didn't expect that they'd get three or more. I was disappointed that we lost Jimmy just when he was starting to get interesting. See, e.g., his college...um...exploits with Gillian.

Yeah - I'd say it's a pretty swell job, that one.
