Of course he said that. How about all republicans just collectively decide to stop talking about rape? It seems like it would be the smart thing to do.

I met a girl like that. Fortunately I never tried to get her in bed. She's telling her friends about this guy and I'm thinking "but I saw you voluntarily go with him and you're obviously making... oh, screw it, your friends don't care if you're telling the truth."

2012-10-10 08:47:45 PM
I understand his father's point, but seriously, you do not have to express every touchy subject in the most offensive way possible. How can a politician not understand this?

Are there easy rapes for legitimate rape?

Can we get a primer on rape? A National standard, perhaps?

You can hardly blame the rest of us for jumping to that conclusion. He willingly joined the party, he hangs out with the wrong people...look at how Republicans are acting these days. Totally asking for it.

Yet the GOP mysteriously dismisses Romney's actions

Dismisses the fact that Romney ran to France to avoid the Vietnam war.

Dismisses the fact that Romney has flip flopped on literally every major political topic depending on who his audience, including abortion and universal healthcare.

Dismisses the fact that Romney has eliminated thousands of American jobs by shipping them to China for profit (but he's a job creator!!!),

Dismisses the fact that every single speech he and Paul Ryan give are wallpapered with not only lies but outrageous lies.

Dismisses the fact that Romney thinks that if people don't pay taxes they're lazy and not worth his time, this includes most retirees living on Social Security.

Dismisses the fact that Romney was and still is anti-gun and to this day advocates making semi-auto handguns and rifles illegal. He refers to these as guns of unusual lethality.

Dismisses the fact that while he only pays 14% tax on his income, he believes he deserves a tax break.

Dismisses the fact that Romney wants to cut vital prenatal programs for women because we can't afford them but in the same breath wants to build 15 new Navy ships a year.

Dismisses the fact that Romney was pro abortion and called himself a pro-choice governor before he decided to run for president and become pro-life.

Dismisses the fact that Romney stated that Ted Kennedy was bought by special interest groups because accepted 10 million dollars from them yet Romney has accepted nearly a billion dollars for his own campaign from all the top banks and investment corporations.

Dismisses the fact that Romney has stated he will increase defense spending and greatly increase the size of the US Navy, attack Iran, cut taxes by 20% FOR EVERYONE and eliminate the deficit. He obviously can't do math.

Dismisses the fact that Romney is the inspiration for Obama-care it was modeled after Romney-care. Yet he vows to eliminate Obama-care.

I larfed. But I agree, in context it's really not as horrible as "You can only get pregnant from rape if you enjoy it" or as stupid as "Dogfighting is OK because humans fight each other for sport". Or "The big bang and evolution are lies straight from Satan". On the level of today's GOP derpgarrbl I give it a 3 out of 10.

Metric rape or imperial rape?

The conversion rate, if I remember correctly, is 1.6 metric rapes to the legitimate rape, which is the imperial unit. 13 legitimate rapes is a Baker's Rape and 144 legitimate rapes is gross.

If you do have premarital sex, just remember, consensual sex can turn into rape in an awful hurry. Because all of a sudden a young lady gets pregnant and the parents are madder than a wet hen and she's not going to say, 'Oh, yeah, I was part of the program.' All that she has to say or the parents have to say is it was rape because she's underage. Remember, if you go down that road, some girls, they rape so easy.

I read that in Barry White's voice.

ArcadianRefugee: Given that he was quoting his father, why are people dumping on him?

My father, bless his heart, said many, many things that I would not repeat. Add to it that this guy is an elected official and it's not too much of a stretch to say he deserves any dumping he gets.

Who the Fark are these people?

2012-10-10 11:04:56 PM
Just remember.. this man has a woman in his life...maybe it's his wife, or daughter, or sister, someone close to him. Someone he loves...who has been raped. And they have to hear this vile man make these comments about rape victims.

Just like Todd Akin. And all of these assholes making these comments about rape victims.

Those poor women. I hope they stand up for themselves and ream him out. Let them know how they feel. Because nearly every man knows someone who has been raped. And every man should be aware of how someone who has been raped feels on this subject.

If you are a Republican in this environment and a reporter asks you a question about rape, the only thing you should say is "Rape is bad".

AbbeySomeone: Because a false accusation can ruin your life.

Having been falsely accused of said act by an ex-girlfriend, I can vouch for the fact that it can indeed ruin your life and your career. It is certainly true that some people will go back and claim something that really didn't happen. Men will do it. Women will do it. It is always a good thing to be sexually cautious, but the statement that "some girls rape easy" is so far from the actual intended meaning as to be a different universe. I can see what the quote is referring to in context, but those four words, however well-meant in the original context, might as well be radioactive. It does also seem to be targeted opportunistically at women, even though both genders will pull crap like that.

Girl From The North Country: My father, bless his heart, said many, many things that I would not repeat.

That's quite a tease there---hanging that out without any examples. My own father, a lovable man in many ways--used to be fond 20 years ago of talking about the "farking queers" and Arabs as "the brotherhood of the unwashed." And this was a guy who was for Black civil rights before it was cool. Sometimes society just creeps up on your WWII-era limitations. He's now finally accepted that same-sex marriage is going to happen. He's not really cool with it--but he knows better than to try and fight it.

"He also told me one thing, 'If you do (have premarital sex), just remember, consensual sex can turn into rape in an awful hurry,' " Rivard said. "Because all of a sudden a young lady gets pregnant and the parents are madder than a wet hen and she's not going to say, 'Oh, yeah, I was part of the program.' All that she has to say or the parents have to say is it was rape because she's underage. And he just said, 'Remember, Roger, if you go down that road, some girls,' he said, 'they rape so easy.'

that was VERY badly phrased...but I can see where he was going with his comments. his intent was not offensive....his choice of words, on the other hand, was sloppy and open to exploitation. he sounds like he needs a class on how to talk to the media and/or lots of practice speaking in public.

bojon: Pretty good advice from his father.

Of course, even had that been phrased far more elegantly, there'd be a huge uproar from people screaming "NO WOMAN WOULD EVER DO THAT YOU INSENSITIVE PRICK" .. This guy is just boned, no matter what he does, from both sides, for even bringing up the topic.

It happens. It happens a lot.

I'm on the other side, though, where after being hot and heavy for 4 months straight, this woman just stopped talking to me, for 2 years. Then shows up with a 1.5 year old baby, saying "Oh, look at your daughter. We should get married!".

In part because he chose his story poorly, and in this climate, he really should have.

Pretty much any racial epithet imaginable, being against people from different races dating, anti-gay, the list goes on and on. At the same time he was sort of a contradiction because he hung out in blues and jazz clubs where the crowds were pretty diverse. I like to think if he would have lived a bit longer he would have continued to grow and evolve.

I don't use that shiat as an attempt at clever, folksy examples of suggesting that people should get a good job

yeah, no kidding. the GOP has to know they're being targeted with that whole 'war on women' thing...being careful about what they say should be second nature by now.
