Besides, I hate to break it to you, but the October Surprise is going to be a war between Syria, Turkey and Jordan.

I thought we didn't investigate War Presidents because they are all busy with their warry-type stuff.

Do they hate America or something?

FlashHarry: unemployment 8.1%: OBAMA IS A TERRIBLE PRESIDENT BECAUSE THE NONPARTISAN BLS SAYS SO
unemployment 7.8%: THE BLS IS COOKING THE BOOKS FOR OBAMA

this is what republicans actually believe

GWSuperfan: That was my first thought too. (Issa is my Rep.)

Yeah, well my rep is Todd Akin, so suck it.

MeinRS6 is such an effective turd dropper. That clown strolls in here and drops his dinkleberries and quickly leaves before he can get called out to clean up his mess.

He's a jackass, no doubt, but still an effective turd dropper.

gilgigamesh: MeinRS6: mrshowrules: It is the official unemployment number.

It's a pantload of truthiness is what it is.

So you are suggesting - and please feel free to correct me if I am wrong -- that the Obama administration somehow infiltrated the BLS and fixed these statistics? Is that what you are claiming?

If so, please elaborate. I can't wait to hear how this was accomplished.

I'm not suggesting a conspiracy. I'm saying that history shows us that these numbers will most likely be heavily modified after the election. The numbers are also aberrant to previous numbers, as I showed with the link above. So maybe instead of a conspiracy, this is a case of garbage in/garbage out. Of course, the timing of the coming corrections is very convenient for Obama, but that is less sinister than the results themselves, that run counter to previous stats when growth was so poor.

I don't get all the hubbub really.... 7.8% still sucks. Sure, we're finally back to where we were on Obama's day one but that is hardly worth getting worked up about. We're going in the right direction as slow as that may be... what really matters is what happens Jan. 1 when the marginal rates all go back up with that much less disposable income and the massive shiatstorm coming that is Spain and Greece and the value of the euro.

2012-10-11 12:31:59 AM

theknuckler_33: Apparently people forget that the unemployment rate was 8.1% in friggin' JUNE and then went up two months in a row before coming back down again.

Also it usually drops in September, back to school, etc.

Oh you are here. Welcome back, Mr. Dinkleberry.

So you are basically saying that BLS cooked the books specifically to help Obama, right? What about all the other times when the numbers weren't so favorable? Did you say then that they were cooking the books to hurt Obama?

Or is the real reason that you are so wedded to the concept of "your team" winning (GOP) that you would actually like people to be out of work and struggling to make the "other team" look bad?

Turn in your American citizenship, shiatbird.

cloud_van_dame: Darrell Issa, right?

/did not look at article
//Issa is the reincarnation of a Jesuit from the Spanish Inquisition

I wouldn't give him that much credit. He's more of a dirty thug, the enforcer for some second-rate organized crime family (a.k.a the House Republicans). "Teflon" Darrell Issa has somehow managed to get himself accused of a few separate incidents of car theft, threatening an ex-employee with a gun, and was investigated for arson and insurance fraud after a business he had recently bought and insured burned down. The only charge the authorities were able to get him on was illegally having an unregistered gun in his glove compartment, which would be a felony and jail time for most anyone else.

He has also recently broke federal law by illegally revealed confidential information from a sealed wiretap by inserting it in Congressional record, and did this while conducting a politically-motivated witch hunt.

Remember, kids: What they want here is a big, obvious, full-bodied, obnoxious, 24-hour-news-cycle-bloating investigation, but they don't want results. They want to create the perception of wrongdoing.

Once this lawyerly boondoggle gets underway, the log line will be "They're being investigated. Clearly, they did something wrong." And the sufficiently low information voters will lap it up and beg for more.

It goes the other way too. Some especially dismal numbers have been revised upwards, but all anybody pays attention to is the first draft.

This metric is a load of crap, but you can thank the GOP this time around for running with it. Congratulations, you made this bed, now lie in it.

Remember, this statistic was perfectly okay and arrived at properly in past months when it made Obama look bad, but now that there's some good news that might help Obama, it's all "OH MY GOD! CONSPIRACY! THE BOOKS ARE COOKED!"

I guess a little honesty is too much to expect from the modern GOP.

TFA: "Indeed, since Obama became President, the working age population has increased by 8.4 million. At the same labor force participation rate as when Obama entered office, that would require 5.52 million new jobs just to keep pace with that population growth."

The labor force participation rate began its steady decline when Clinton was leaving the presidency. It's time for a new investigation all right, but one the sycophant mouth-breather who penned that piece of crap should dread. It's high time to investigate the Right.

Oh, look. It's somebody else that doesn't know what they are talking about.

I already posted a link that described in detail how this number was different than the previous months - and any other moth in recorded BLS history. Buy hey, you keep going on about conspiracies if it makes you feel good. This is about math, not the Illuminati.

By using a link to the AEI? One of the host of neocon "think tanks" that basically rates the Obama administration as equivalent to the Stalin regime? Yeah. sounds legit.

Would you care to make a wager on whether or not the revision will put unemployment above 8% again?

I didn't think so.

The four examples of unemployment reduction in a slow growth economy show no pattern. Using your quoted source, the ration of net new payrolls to household employment are:

May 2010 - 15.18
Dec 2010 - 0.42
Jan 2011 - 1.00
Sep 2012 - 0.13

LFP rate fell during 1, 2 and 4 (as it has consistently for over 20 years) and rose only for 3. Tea leaves and baked turtle shells generate more consistent patterns.

It's when there is almost zero growth and to have such a large spike in jobs is what is unprecedented.

What they didn't show is almost zero growth and a huge jump in jobs.

Probably too late, but MeinRS6, your premise is flawed. the unemployment estimates do not get revised in the manner you are suggesting, the payroll numbers do. The CPS(household) numbers are revised for prior years(5) to reflect new seasonal adjustment factors. Rates change in the -.1 to +.1 range. You can look at December historical releases to see what happened each year. No pattern in last few years I can see. Also, in January, new population controls are introduced, but only affect the figures going forward.
The payroll data, as has been noted, get revised a lot.And then they get benchmarked to the QCEW, which is the 'universe' of all unemployment insurance paying employers. But that is a quarterly program with a considerable lag, as it is a massive amount of data.

2012-10-11 05:08:15 PM
You forgot to explain how this unprecedented rise in employment with almost no growth took place though. You are talking about things that happen every year and I'm talking about something that has never happened before. I don't know why you can't see the difference. Willful ignorance perhaps. I read that California stats were not included at all in these most recent numbers as well. That's a nice break for Obama.

I guess we can discuss this again in Nov, when unemployment mysteriously is adjusted back up. Getting rid of Obama is the best thing that can happen for the unemployment rate.
