(Jalopnik)   So nobody really gets hurt when some pimply teen girl buys a cheap Chinese knockoff of a $1000 designer handbag. The same can't be said for cheap Chinese knockoff airbags, though   (jalopnik.com) divider line 72

But with prices this low, honestly who would mind a little catastrophic malfunction?

That's what happens when you make airbags and fireworks in the same building!

I thought free market forces and tax breaks were supposed to make this impossible.

This is what happens when both parties sell out the American public and workers by off-shoring critical health and safety devices and processes to a country with no regard for either and no penalties for violating standards or laws.

The second clip looks like the airbag was designed and produced by James Cameron.

Ah this reminds me of one of the Thai uprisings a while back.
The government ran out of the more expensive American made teargas grenades and started using cheaper Chinese made ones.

They turned out to be cheaper less gassy more grenadey.

I shared that with some Egyptian fellows during the protests. I felt it was important to let them know that their government cared enough to use the very best.

I believe we're discussing Chinese Counterfeit Airbags... and not Counterfeit Chinese Airbags... as it says in TFA. Language... 'cause stuff matters and stuff.

On second thought... I'm guessing that all air-bags are probably made in China anyway... so nevermind I guess.

I did find this picture though. Apparently there's some kind of rape prevention device available that needs to be reset frequently. The Vag Airbag.

They need to seriously step up the penalty for counterfeit safety devices.

There also needs to be a fine for anyone who installs counterfeit safety devices. There would be no obligation to show they knew it (therefore, obviously, the penalty would be a lot less) but it would make them look carefully at their suppliers.

Once more you fly through the door
And the wheel's in my heart
And my car will go on and on

Autoliv has a factory or two in northern Utah.
I don't know how much of the 40% or so of the airbag market they control is made in those plants but at least some are.

I work for a company that makes tooling for a company that makes the explosive charges for the airbags, so I know those are made here at least. The actual airbags may be made overseas in China, but AFAIK the charges are made here.

It seems your sarcasm detector has failed.

If not, you should seriously engage in some study of what actually happens in a completely free market. Hint: It's really bad for everyone.

And guess what, no recall is issued. If you have a fake one you're going to have to spend hundreds of dollars to get it fixed yourself. Good luck!

What cheap quality! What shoddy workmanship! What a travesty of manufacturing!
You would never, EVER, see such dangerous lapses in manufacturing quality in America.

Why would there be a recall for an aftermarket part not installed by a representative of the manufacturer on behalf of said manufacturer?

You think there's a list of customers somewhere?

Theoretically only collision shops should have installed these particular airbags, or possibly independent mechanics.
