Yankees need a big start from Kuroda tonight. I do not want Hughes on the hill with the season on the line

I'm not sure those of us in Birdland have anymore nails to bite or hair to pull out.

Cards went up 1-0 in the 1st, now they have runners at the corners and no outs in the 2nd

2012-10-10 01:43:12 PM
Come on Cards! Let's get this done.

4 nothing Cards in the 3rd? yeah!

Hoping Yankees can pull off a victory tonight. Whoever loses this one will be in a tight spot but Yanks got the home advantage at least.

I was cheering for the Reds (lived in Cinci for a few years), but after that late error it would be interesting to see a complete Giants comeback despite my hate for them.

I want the Nats to win because of reasons.

I hope the Tigers and the A's find a way to both lose. Neither advance.

I have the Cardinals radio feed on XM & while i realize there's a certain amount of homerism that goes with the territory, these guys out Hawk-ing Hawk Harrelson!

Washington fans were compared disdainfully to Cardinal fans, "The greatest in history." Really?

Also, fans were encouraged to buy NLCS Championship tickets, even tho "We don't know who the Redbirds will be playing yet." Wow.

I've had the MLB audio package for years....and this sounds no different than any radio announcer for any time I've listened to. Not defending the homerism because it bugs me as well, but it's a staple of all hometown radio broadcasters from what I've heard.

You also have to understand that Mike Shannon--in addition to having played for the Cardinals--has probably been hitting the sauce since about 9 AM as well......so take anything and everything he says with piles of salt.

Yes. Hell, the Pirates were selling NLDS tickets over a month before the season ended. It's standard practice.

I think the original point though is the way it was said by the announcer assumed the Cardinals would win the NLDS, rather than "Though we don't know who the Cardinals will be playing should they advance."

I'm not seeing the big deal, but to each their own.

When did Chris Carpenter learn to hit? He's 2-2 with a single and a double so far off Jackson. Hopefully they can get him home and tack on another.

I'm in that camp - if you lose game 3, throw CC in game 4. That probably won't happen though because it would leave game 5 to a 106 year old Andy Pettitte on just 3 days rest. Which, if it were up to me, would be fine. But Girardi will be a little more cautious than that

Oh man, I'm nervous about tonight. Kuroda has been great at times but somewhat inconsistent. And as has been said, the Yankees really don't want Hughes on the mound in an elimination game. I'm not worried about Baltimore's regular season record in the Bronx, but I am worried that they're showing a lot of spirit and not just rolling over for the Yankees. Here's hoping tonight the Bombers can hit a few deep and send the Orioles' bullpen into a tailspin.

The Cardinals currently up on Washington pleases me.

The way it reads, that qualifying phrase was from Shrugging Atlas, demonstrating how the announcer didn't sound. In which case, that would absolutely be being a homer on the part of the announcer.

Baltimore has won 2 of 3 every time they've played at New York this season...let's not let this be the first time they don't.

That's what I thought I remembered. After a 2 and a half hour rain delay with nothing to do but drink, then a 5 run top of the ninth with nothing to do but drink, I couldn't remember clearly.

Anyway, my point is, I doubt CC will start another game on only 3 days rest after pitching essentially a full game his last outing.

Holy cripes -- dodged a bullet there and didn't even realize it.

Thank FSM for the KNBR MLB.tv feed + RadioDelay.

Also handy for eliminating the Shoe Pisser in later rounds.

Eh, despite going so deep he was very economical - only at about 120 pitches, which is normally how far he can go without a problem. I don't feel that will be an issue in whether or not he can or should pitch on 3-days rest (which he definitely should if the Yankees don't win tonight).

For having had such a great season, they've really not been too great thus far. They won Saturday, but that game was crap from both sides. Sunday and today we've not seen much out of the Nats... I wonder if it's just inexperience. They're a great team and they'll be back if they can't pull it out.

Still, I'm amused at how much shiat baseball we see in the postseason- stupid errors, inability to hit in a timely manner, and so on. The average game in the middle of the summer ends up being better baseball than the average postseason game. Usually.

Pitching CC in Game 4 should only occur if the Yankees lose tonight, as he would give them a much better chance of getting to game 5 than Hughes. It also gives them a chance to consider having Andy go on short rest, which would be fine by me.

If the Yankees win tonight, then they can take their chances tomorrow with Hughes and hope that, if necessary, CC can deliver them a good game 5.

2012-10-10 03:31:49 PM

Freakin Rican: yeah, i actually thought they were gonna handle the cards pretty well.

I wasn't really sure how this postseason was going to go for the Cards. Last year I sure learned a lesson about giving up on them. They hadn't shown an ability to regularly defeat good teams (again), but when their backs are against the wall they often end up stepping up to the challenge.

The game against the Braves was kind of a mess, but generally the Cards managed to handle them without much trouble. Against the Nats, after the first game I figured they'd either collapse into pieces or beat them like red headed stepchildren. Thus far it's been more the latter. If the Cards can hold on to win I might begin to think that the NLCS is a real possibility.

Yup, intentionally walking the bases loaded to set up a double play only works if you don't walk the next guy up. I'm getting the feeling the Nationals are pretty much out of this game. They're going to have to summon up some motivation for this to not be a 4 game series.

2012-10-10 03:48:23 PM
So while us Yankees fans are worrying about the possibility that the season comes down to Phil Hughes, the Nationals are almost certainly going to have their season come down to Ross Detwiler vs Kyle Lohse.

A-Rod is hitting 3rd and he's DH'ing. Chavez will play 3B and bat 9th. Interesting.....

2012-10-10 03:51:53 PM
Good job, good effort, Carp. I'll take 5 2/3 with no runs any day with the way the bullpen has been working for the most part. Especially if they have a six run lead to work with.

But I gotta tell you, this is why this Cards team was so frustrating at times over the course of the season. Lose a nailbiter 3-2 in game one when the bullpen can't hold a one run lead and the bats can't get any runs with the bases loaded and nobody out, then score 18 runs (and counting) in the next two games.

Just the maddening inconsistency of the lineup - never knowing from day to day if it's bang or whimper.

They've already resumed biatching about the shutdown in Washington and it's only going to get worse if they lose tomorrow. Truthfully, I'm pulling for 'em, but I don't like that matchup tomorrow

Chavez has mashed righties this year (.298/.365/.543 in 274 PA), so that's good. But I don't quite get the DH move. A-Rod is still ok with the glove. Hopefully it works

Maybe something we don't know? A Rod's wrist could be hurting again? Good batting practice today? Doing this wasn't uncommon during regular season to preserve him.

Maybe. Hand injuries tend to linger a bit, so that was going to be a concern. Hopefully by DH'ing, he won't bother the hand as much

If I remember my rules right... it's kind of cool that even though he was dropped from the rotation for this series, Lincecum is still the pitcher-of-record for this game and is in line to get the "W".

And if I don't remember them right, it's still spiffy to see him out there doing well in a long relief stint. I hope it gives the team confidence enough to let him start should they reach the NLCS.

I felt like an asshole leaving Nationals Park in the end of the 7th inning, but given how shiatty the pitching had been, how shiatty the offense had been with RISP, and how shiatty the commute home would be once the game let out in the middle of rush hour, it was the right call.

Let's do this shiat.

what pathological psychos rooted for Darth Vader while watching Star Wars??

Well since Larry Lucchino decided to call the Yankees "The Evil Empire", the Yankee fans said fark it and embraced the moniker.

Basically, we used our aggressive feelings and let the hate flow through us.

I don't like seeing that crap on Fark, you think I want to infect my phone with it too?

Was going to say that not offering TBS in HD seems weird since it's been around forever, but then I remembered before they got the MLB playoff package they didn't really have any reason to be offered in HD.

Oh, nevermind.. for some reason my addled mind thought the Phillies missed the playoffs last year. I guess this year was such a drop off, part of my brain couldn't believe they won the NL East just last year.

He should hire Scott Walker as a batting coach. I hear he's great a preventing strikes.

If anyone it will probably be Swisher with Pettitte a darkhorse. Of course if Swisher wants Werth money I don't think he will be back.

Pettitte and that's it. Maaaaaaaybe Ichiro, but I personally wouldn't do it. Swish will sign a big money deal somewhere else

Swisher shouldn't be anywhere near this team next year. Absolutely not.

I'd rather they brought up some kids and miss the playoffs than have to sit through this shiat every year.

I know Joe has said no CC tomorrow, will he stick with that if they can't get a goddamn run here?

2012-10-10 09:55:07 PM
The good news is A Rod wont get to have a walkoff strikeout tonight.

The bad news is hes batting in the 8th

2012-10-10 09:55:59 PM

Nefarious: I know Joe has said no CC tomorrow, will he stick with that if they can't get a goddamn run here?

Yes. Joe is one stubborn bastard when it comes to things like this. I have a feeling Hughes is on an extremely short leash though, with Phelps right behind him the whole game.

2012-10-10 09:56:29 PM

Nefarious: I know Joe has said no CC tomorrow, will he stick with that if they can't get a goddamn run here?

He's very big on sticking to his word, despite being a wrong farknugget.

So Hughes will go out there, give up 5 runs before the third, and then they'll score 4 impressive runs.

2012-10-10 09:56:31 PM
Gonzalez pitched awesome..Glad to see him go.

If they lose, he should go to CC. He won't though, and Hughes will get crushed because, well, he's Phil Hughes

Pitching a hell of a game. Two mistakes.

But you knew the bats would die as soon as the playoffs start. They always do.

You know, I just said that Ibanez should have started instead of A-Rod, but now I stop to think and wonder - could he put up these kind of numbers if he was a starter, or is Ibanez only this good off the bench?

Doubt it. I have a feeling Jeter will be DHing tomorrow, in which case, A-Rod has to play 3rd (Joe would rather take his chances with A-Rod in the lineup than Chavez)

I think having him play everyday exposed him a bit. He was supposed to be the DH vs righties but we needed him out in the field with Gardener down.

I don't know any former MVP that come off the bench
I don't know any 5 time all-star that come off the bench
I don't know any Olympian that come off the bench

So why Allen Iverson?

I'm a transplanted New Yorker (Yankee Fan), living in Maryland for the past 6 years. I've always been a Yankee fan, but being in Baltimore, and watching the Orioles play at Camden they started to grow on me. Up until this season it way always like, oh you rascally Orioles, you're so darn adorable thinking you can win. Then all of a sudden they actually start playing well. At the end of the season I was pulling for the Yankees to win the Division and the Orioles to win the Wildcard. As this series has played out i'm still not sure who I want to. Tonight part of me is going, HA HA HA HA Yankee's win again on something that no one thinks is allowed to happend. And another part of me is thinking, F*CK Ibañez, and F*CK the Yankees, that SH*T did not just happen. I'm truly torn.

They should make baseball caps for people who feel like they are transitioning between two teams. The back of the cap can have your old team logo (cause it's behind you), and the front of the cap will have the new team logo (because they're your future). And you can always where the hat backwards when you go to the games of your original team.

Yes I know, cool story.

2012-10-10 11:25:00 PM

I'm a Tigers fan with a ticket to a potential Game 5 in enemy territory, and my employees don't know whether I'm going to be in tomorrow. The last thing I need now is a rain delay.

LOL @ Suzyn Waldman - when she got Ibanez on the field to interview him, she said, "Hey Raul, how's it going? Anything new with you?"

yanno.. I can't put my finger on it, but there seems to be a stark contrast in defense at 1B between the Yankees and Tigers....

Actually, that's probably the problem. We need Kate Hudson back. Muse is on tour right now, right? Surely she's gotta be lonely...

i'm not sure if that's stephen drew's fault or mike gallego's fault. but one of them is an idiot

Amazing. The only reason Raul is still hanging on in the majors is because he's so damn well-liked. He's a shadow of what he once was. Couldn't have happened to a better guy though.

I think I have a Ibanez rookie card kicking around somewhere.... probably should sell that tomorrow.

2012-10-10 11:43:24 PM
Mike Gallego is the A's third base coach. I remember when he played for the Yankees. I'm pretty sure he wore #2.

I can't disagree, but I can see Leyland going with experience over a rookie for the playoffs.

Leyland hates stats. Downs was more effective versus both LH and RH, especially in the 2nd half, than Coke. Coke was giving up a near .400 BA to RH by the end of the season. He's just... lost his touch I think.

Speaking of losing your touch, just wait until Benoit strolls out next inning. Tigers better score here to give them some insurance runs.

Maybe just leave AL AL in for the rest of the game if he stays good. I don't want to see Benoit or Drama Grande tonight.

The predictable Delmon Young.

At one of the games I worked this year, I had the chance to chat for a while (like 3 whole innings) with Downs' dad. That man is insanely proud of his son and told me that Darrin loves Detroit and wants to play here next year. Good, I said, 'cause I'm over the Phil Coke Experiment. Downs has a lot more movement on his stuff and doesn't waste all his energy running out to the mound from the 'pen like Coke does.

To Benoit's credit, in post-game interviews he's manned up and answered all the questions thrown at him. He knows he's performing poorly, and all he can do is go out there and try to improve. It's refreshing to see, instead of scowling at a reporter that's asking what has to be asked.

In a roundabout way, he at least got through the toughest part of the A's order. Should make for a better 9th for Valverde.

Who am I kidding, Valverde could make it close facing a single A team.

Y'know what saddens me? If the Tigers make the World Series, Valverde will be offered another contract after the season, and he really shouldn't get one.

With Martinez coming back, their everyday lineup is pretty set. If Sanchez stays, so is the rotation. So any money spent ought to be on the bullpen, and I hope they start with a closer. Win or lose, Valverde is just too much drama.

Young is gone. Boesch is trade-bait. Porcello is gone IF Sanchez has another good start in the postseason. Inge's salary comes off the books. Peralta should be traded for Altuve from the Astros (I know I'm dreaming here). Smyly will be 5th starter unless something happens to him in the offseason. So yes, Valverde should be allowed to leave and find money from another bunch of suckers team.
