Fingernails on denim. UGH. Freaks me out thinking about it.

Styrofoam rubbing on styrofoam kills me. Fingernails on chalkboards is ok, can't remember it making me cringe or anything. But styrofoam makes me seek out and kill whoever does it.

Maybe I'm nuts, but the way that FEELS bothers me much more than how it sounds. Ugh, I shiver just thinking about it.

I must be a freak then. Nails on the chalkboard and babies crying don't bother me. I can ignore that noise with ease. What really bugs me is crowd noise. I can't stand it. Dragging steel across porcelain and concrete produces bad sounds too. It makes my teeth hurt.

Also beeping. Beeping makes me murderous.

Writing/using sharpies and highlighters, and seconding the dull pencil. Both of those made me DESPISE school, and when I could use pens freely in highschool, I did far better.

I'd also include dull pencils. My teachers never quite understood my obsession with pens over pencils.

About 2 months ago we were parked overnight in the Civic Center parking lot. Imagine waking up to that against the side of the camper. Some little kid (maybe 8) was using our home as a bouncy-wall for his ball. Why he was there at 6am in the morning we never found out. Scared the crap out of him and he ran off. We also left, in case he complained to mommy about the scary homeless people who tried to molest him.

Count me in with the feel/tactile sensation/touch is what really causes involuntary shivers. the sound never bothered me at all, but running my fingertips/nails over anything that is hard and smooth/dry like a chalkboard....blech

As people age their hearing becomes less acute and they can no longer hear the higher ranges (10kHz+) by the time they are in their mid-twenties. Thus the chalkboard scratch affects youngsters more than older adults.
A Scottish inventor, Howard Stapleton, acted on this knowledge and built a device that broadcasts a loud (100dB+) warbling and intermittent sound at above 17kHz which is inaudible to older adults but drives children and young adults who can hear this frequency away. This device, which Stapleton named "The Mosquito" is now being marketed world wide and is employed to discourage loitering by young people. Apparently it is painfully effective.

Yeah... i don't buy that theory.... To me, the dread is about the physical feeling of nails on slate... I couldn't care less about the resulting sound of the scraping....

That explains something that happened to me in HS and bothered me for years afterward. The school was having some construction done in one of that hallways, and the acoustical ceiling tiles had been removed. The exposed hard surfaces combined with the sonic motion detectors created some kind of hellish resonance effect at one of the hallway junctions. It was incredibly uncomfortable every time I passed that spot.

None of the teachers could hear it, and I only found a few other students that could. Thought I was going nuts. Thanks for clearing it up.

Fingernails on a chalkboard isn't only bothers me a little. The sound I hate the most is the squeaking sound your teeth make if you happen to chew on a polyester sweater.

The sound of someone rubbing a balloon. Makes my ears bleed.

The sound of liquid being poured into a glass actually pisses me off. I can't explain it.

I recall reading an article years ago that some sounds are intrinsically uncomfortable for adults because they fall into the same frequency range as the scream of a young child in distress.

This is why is boggles my mind that any ad for anything would use a crying baby for any reason. And yet, they do.

I knew a girl who couldn't stand the sound of styrofoam being squeaked. She could never even be in the same room as someone with takeout.

I don't mind stuttering (it's annoying, but not on a primal level), but "food noises" makes me stabby. Sucking your teeth, chewing with your mouth open, etc....

When I was ~12-years old I had a summer school class at the city museum. The motion detectors at every exterior doorway, emergency doors, etc. were insanely annoying, but nobody else could hear them.
I am old now and have played in punk and industrial bands so although I dislike LOUD sounds I can no longer hear the songs of bats or motion detectors.

Huh. Nora Jones' voice has a similar effect on me.

For some reason, the nails on a chalkboard thing doesn't get to me as much as, say, the sound of someone scraping or chomping their teeth on metal flatware when eating. I wonder if people who do that just don't have any fillings or have never had a toothache. It may seem trivial, but to give you an idea of what it's like to me: imagine vigorously taking a steel file to your teeth and then chewing on a wad of heavy-duty aluminum foil.
