ZoeNekros: I found that disingenuous, and below her usual standards.

From what I can tell, those are her usual standards. She is a partisan blinded tool. She also went ape shiat about Romney's joke about not knowing why airplane windows don't open. And yes, it is a joke. Watch the video.

/this is coming from an Obama supporter, and one who is disliking Romney more and more.
//Of course that doesn't mean she is always wrong. She is often right, in fact, and is here. These wackos should not be allowed near science policy.

I haven't been watching her show for all that long and missed the airplane window bit (but then, almost everyone ignored the fact that it was an obvious joke gone dud), but this was the first time I noticed something like this. All other times, I find her very insightful, although her humor seems a bit forced.

It was a good piece up to the ending. Then she declared a "win" and ridiculed the dino farts comment.

Yeah, that's why I softened the blow by saying that she is often right. Nonetheless, she is always a partisan shill -- it's just that often times that doesn't matter. There are plenty of legitimate gripes to be made, and topics which are party-neutral, and she generally does a good job with them.

I wouldn't say it is incorrect. It is incomplete. It is certainly mostly correct, but there are still some big unanswered questions.

Why Would I Read the Article: Look, I'm not saying that the little dude isn't intelligent, but let's stop pretending that an advanced degree in political science is something we should be impressed with.

Let's also stop pretending that your comments are worth reading. After Maddow's credentials were pointed out to you, you replied with a banal lesbian joke, then followed it up by suggesting that a doctorate in Political Science from Oxford isn't sufficiently "impressive" to you. Do Rush Limbaugh and Seah Hannity possess more impressive bona fides for your tastes?

And what Internationally-renowned University gave you a merit-based full scholarship for your post-graduate studies? One of fewer than a hundred awarded world-wide per year?

Dude, she isn't just smart, she's a member of an elite group that numbers less than 8000 people in the history of the world. It's a hell of an exclusive club, one that you or I have no glimmer of hope to join.

Hell, just walking on campus, she's far and away brighter than anyone jabbering away, here.

Grungehamster: MugzyBrown: coeyagi: No, but I am sure most of them are experts in 1 or more of those things. But your "concern" is duly noted.

Please let me know which of the congressmen on the ways and means committee are experts in these fields? The chairman, Charles Rangel... let's see.... has been in politics since 1967 and before that was a soldier and a lawyer. Sounds like somebody to write a law that affects the whole country and a large chunk of the economy.

Fluorescent Testicle: You do know that Obamacare was written by Republicans, right? Not Democrats?

So?

There's no person or group of people in congress qualified to write a law of such a magnitute... that's why I wouldn't want any of them to attempt it.

What's your point?

The healthcare bill wasn't primarily written by politicians. The framework was developed by the conservative think tank the Heritage Foundation, and large chunks of the PPACA were written by lobbying groups representing many interests including both doctors and the health insurance industry until it met their standards to accept that the law addressed their concerns.

The involvement of lobbyists comes with its own problems, but this wasn't just a bunch of former lawyers writing an idealized bill on a field they had only a layman's experience with.

, among others, Jonathon Gruber, an MIT economist specializing in the public policy and health-care economics.

It's not even bona fides.. I seriously dislike Sean and Rush but those guys are very smart. Sean is worth $35 mil and Rush is worth $300 mil or so.. You don't get that kind of cash by being an idiot. You can win that kind of cash in the lotto but the idiot will piss it away in a year or two. You can get that kind of money being an athlete but we know the statistics around that.. gone in a year or two. Both of these guys have built a financial empire and they've done it right. Maddow is worth around $13 million.. She's also very smart.

All of these people have in common is an ability to get people fired up and coming back. Who knows what they really believe and it's not even important. I seriously doubt Rush and Sean believe half the shiat they say on the air but that's not their job. They're not out there to be truth tellers they're out there to make money and they do it well.

She's down there at 86th biggest liar in politics. For comparison:

O'Reilly: 39th.
Schultz: 2nd
Huckabee: 62nd (he is on the list now that he hosts on Faux)
Coulter: 66th
Olbermann: 97th
Hannity: 178th (his sample size is pretty low for someone of his prominence)

She's not exactly squeaky clean, but you should direct your ire to Fox News or at least Ed Schultz.

So now suppose you are a hick, living in a hick state. You live in what is commonly referred to as a civilized country, but you look around you and nowhere in your entire miserable state do you see the slightest sign of civilization. Yet every time you turn on your teevee, which is every single mother-loving day in your life, you see, far off on either coast, others of your fellow citizens enjoying the privileges and usufructs of civilization - comfort, culture, wealth, self-satisfaction and pleasure. Well then, what could be more natural than to take out your frustration and envy by electing the very stupidest and vilest of your benighted region's statesmen to high national office, to deliberately ruin things as much as they can for those smug coastal jerks?

sleeper2995:
Dinosaur farts ? Something tells me there is not a lot of critical thinking going on in this committee

To give Dana Rohrbacher a bit of slack, I think he used "dinosaur farts" as hyperbole and as a rhetorical device. The truth is, we do know a lot about the CO2 levels in prehistoric times. I think the high CO2 levels occurred way, way before dinosaur period, perhaps during the precambrian era. I'm not exactly sure.

The real point buried in that joke is that CO2 isn't the only greenhouse gas.
Methane is a lot worse than CO2 in that regard, but there's also a lot less of it (according to German wikipedia, about 20% of the man-made greenhouse effect is allegedly caused by methane emissions).
Thing is: almost 40% of those man-made methane emissions are in some way related to livestock and the biggest chunk of those emissions is caused directly by ruminants' digestion systems, i.e. cows farting.
Hence there's a joke about grass-guzzlers being worse for the climate than gas-guzzlers.

So, joking about the relevance of dinosaur farts to the greenhouse effect of their time isn't as stupid as it may sound.

/ hmm....how many cow farts equal one Brontosaurus fart?

Nope. Gotta do better than just gay marriage. We gotta toss out abortion, all science that disagrees with the Bible (which is pretty much all biology, astronomy, some aspects of physics, and all or nearly all geology, plus demographics and linguistics), and a plethora of other things, including Harry Potter and rock music or something.

Once we get all this done--"POOF!"--Jesus restores glory to our nation via magic Jesus powers!!!!!! Yay!

This "my ignorance is just as good as your intelligence" BS is getting really tired.

ghall3: Whoa, settle down there. I think a good first step would be passing 8th-grade level math and science tests.

Even that might disqualify them all

ongbok: You know, I don't expect these guys to be scientist or experts. I just expect them to have a basic knowledge of scientific principles and the ability and desire to be able to learn and follow specific topics that are brought up. These guys here are obviously fervently anti science and don't have any desire what so ever to try to understand science and how it fits into the world that we live in. Their only interest seems to be in pushing their own, or whoever is paying them, crackpot theories on everybody, that completely contradicts centuries of scientific study. This is defiantly

[sic] something we don't need on a science committee or in the modern world.

I think the problem with Kos is that they have a few far left posters who go off the deep end and that hurts their credibility.
