(Quad City Times)   People from across the world are donating money in order to support a woman whose cat was burned in a house fire. I'm sure they're also giving money to help rebuild her home, but still, cats, man. Cats   (qctimes.com) divider line 5

My cat got bitten at the weekend. He got out the back door, came home with a lump on his neck, took him to the vet who said it was an ulcer caused by a bite, he needed to be put on a drip, sedated, wound lanced, cleaned, stitched, 2 night stay, 7 days worth of antibiotics, painkillers, another check up on Friday - cost the same as a week's holiday in a nice hotel in Italy, or two weeks in a crappy hotel in Spain. BECAUSE HE'S WORTH IT, in a L'Oreal kind of way. Dammit he's our pet and we care about his welfare and when bad things happen you tend to say 'fix it' rather than 'how much'.

I love my cat like some people love their kids, but I couldn't put her through that. I would have had her put down. Before you start yelling at me, let me tell you that there is no pain quite as bad a the pain of a burn. At least people can understand that the pain is temporary. It would have hurt like hell to put her down, but I can't see putting an animal through that kind of pain with no understanding of what is going on. And I cannot see spending that kind of money when healthy cats are dying every day in shelters.

Cold_Sassy: mcwehrle: themasterdebater: Why bother to get insurance when you can cry about it on the internet and get random sympathizers to donate to your cause!

The donations are not because they are replacing their uninsured things. The donations are for the medical care of the burned cat. I don't get the uninsured hate happening here.

It's because, if you can't afford to insure your house for say, a few hundred bucks a year, then you can't afford to properly care for two animals. I'm sure the cat and dog were both spayed/neutered and up to date with their vaccinations and heartworm meds etc. I know, because I have a dog and a cat and their vet bills avereage about $1,000.00/year. So now do you get it?

Ok, let me be clear, I get this part:

I still don't get the hate. What PROOF do you have that the pets were underfed, unneutered/spayed and without vaccinations? I have 3 cats. Until I purchased my house this year, so for say the last 8 years while I was renting another house, I had no property insurance. Yet, all of my animals were properly fed, had regular vet visits and were spayed/neutered. And vet bills for all three of them are no where near $1000 a year.

hint:
not insured =/= bad pet owner.

So no, I don't get it. But hey, hate on.

Well, I could rip you to pieces as to why you're wrong, but this is the internet, so what's the point?

KidneyStone: "Jones' one-story home and its uninsured contents were destroyed . . ."

I have a huge soft spot for animals but situations like this make me shake my head. Can afford two animals but not home insurance?

Bet she had a refrigerator too.
