I have a huge soft spot for animals but situations like this make me shake my head. Can afford two animals but not home insurance?

Though I agree with Subby, reading the article made me tear up and want to hug my kitty extra tight when I get home from work. I couldn't even imagine what I would do if I lost her.

Really?

Last Halloween a guy in my neighborhood had his dog wake him up to get out of the house during a fire. He grabbed the dog's collar and his car keys and got out with a dog collar and his car keys. (It even made Fark and the front page of CNN). He still isn't back in the house.

Why is this so hard for some to grasp?

The donations are not because they are replacing their uninsured things. The donations are for the medical care of the burned cat. I don't get the uninsured hate happening here.

It's because, if you can't afford to insure your house for say, a few hundred bucks a year, then you can't afford to properly care for two animals. I'm sure the cat and dog were both spayed/neutered and up to date with their vaccinations and heartworm meds etc. I know, because I have a dog and a cat and their vet bills avereage about $1,000.00/year. So now do you get it?

Ok, let me be clear, I get this part:

welcometofark.jpg

I still don't get the hate. What PROOF do you have that the pets were underfed, unneutered/spayed and without vaccinations? I have 3 cats. Until I purchased my house this year, so for say the last 8 years while I was renting another house, I had no property insurance. Yet, all of my animals were properly fed, had regular vet visits and were spayed/neutered. And vet bills for all three of them are no where near $1000 a year.

hint:
not insured =/= bad pet owner.

So no, I don't get it. But hey, hate on.

I'm sorry, I know you love your cat, I love my cat, but that cat is in a tremendous amount of pain and doesn't understand what is going on. Have it euthanized and get another.

Most of you frequently eat animals that are smarter and more social than cats.

I like cats too, but this is ridiculous.

Why have insurance when they refuse to actually pay up when required? It took me *6* years to get compensated from a high-risk insurance company when it's teenage male driver hit me head on and totaled my vehicle. The cops ticketed him for being the guilty party, he pled guilty and it still took *6* years to get payment. I own my own property with a mobile home trailer on it and no insurance: I'd pay more in premiums then I'd ever collect if needed so f*ck insurance companies.

I love my cat like some people love their kids, but I couldn't put her through that. I would have had her put down. Before you start yelling at me, let me tell you that there is no pain quite as bad a the pain of a burn. At least people can understand that the pain is temporary. It would have hurt like hell to put her down, but I can't see putting an animal through that kind of pain with no understanding of what is going on. And I cannot see spending that kind of money when healthy cats are dying every day in shelters.

I would never yell at someone for whatever their decision is for the care of their pets after a horrific injury such as this. I would most likely have euthanized her as well. However, years ago I also spent nearly $3000 on my min pin when he suffered from acute pancreatitis, so I'm not the best judge. But, they want to care for her, so I donated. Not much, but they are almost to their goal of the $5000 they wanted to raise. I have $5 in the game.

My cat got bitten at the weekend. He got out the back door, came home with a lump on his neck, took him to the vet who said it was an ulcer caused by a bite, he needed to be put on a drip, sedated, wound lanced, cleaned, stitched, 2 night stay, 7 days worth of antibiotics, painkillers, another check up on Friday - cost the same as a week's holiday in a nice hotel in Italy, or two weeks in a crappy hotel in Spain. BECAUSE HE'S WORTH IT, in a L'Oreal kind of way. Dammit he's our pet and we care about his welfare and when bad things happen you tend to say 'fix it' rather than 'how much'.

Depends on the burns. The 2nd degree probably hurt but if she's got a lot more of the 3rd degree, the kitty probably isn't feeling anything. I was severely burned years ago (mostly 2nd and 3rd) and where I had the 3rd degree burns, I had no pain since the nerves were shot. Now as things regenerated, it itched like an SOB but didn't really hurt. The 2nd degree burns, yeah, those hurt but after a while, it just stopped bothering me.

A good sign is that kitty is eating well so right now she's feeling good and that's a good thing.

I'm like you though, I would have seriously leaned towards euthanasia but at least in this case, it seems to have worked out for both kitty and owner :)

Sucks to lose a cat. I've lost many to illness and it's heartbreaking.

OTOH, contents insurance is cheap. If you don't have it, you are potato. Get it. Yes, you can afford it. Eat cheap a couple nights a month and presto, you have the money.

Not necessarily the case. Besides, insurance is, mathematically speaking, a sucker bet.

Whoa, the neckbeards are out in force today.

I have homeowners' insurance and it does not cover vet bills. I discussed this at length with my agent and have talked to other agents about it. You're on your own. So, even if she did have renters' insurance, she'd be S.O.L.

As for the 5K vet bill, I can tell you that those vets are volunteering a lot of their time to help this cat out. No way is that care worth 5K. They probably blew through that in the first few days.

There's a lot of kindness going on here and no amount of neckbearding and arseholery is going to make my office any less dusty.
