(ABC Local)   Duke's chemistry department does NOT suck according to some committee in Stockholm, Sweden. Duke basketball still sucks big time according to some beer-drinker in Lexington, Kentucky which is obviously more important   (abclocal.go.com) divider line 18

Do those Swiss jerk-wads have a cool site like this?
I don't think so!

Can we please just change the Chemistry Award to the Biology Award and be done with it?

The award for medicine/physiology handles the biology stuff, there's some overlap but generally the chemistry prize is for stuff that is very obviously chemistry, like last years prize for quasicrystals. Though some could argue that would fit with physics.

Swiss? I thought Stockholm is in Sweden.

Dumbmitter is dumb. Bob Lefkowitz is in the Department of Biochemistry, not the Department of Chemistry. Despite the similar sounding names, they pretty much have nothing to do with each other.

Maybe the Nobel commitee dropped by Duke for a visit and developed Stockholm Syndrome.

It's not every day that a former neighbor wins the Nobel. Congrats, Bob!

Duke football, amazingly, does not suck this year. 5-1.

Are the other Nobel prizes more credible than the peace one?

Yes. For some reason, the Swedes decide on all the others, but Peace is decided by Norway.

Because when Nobel died, the Norwegian Parliament was involved in dispute resolution efforts - and shortly thereafter Norway peacefully won independence from Sweden.

This is the best ball they've played in almost twenty years, but let's keep that record in perspective. They've played a local FCS team, a Sun Belt team, Memphis (quite possibly the worst program in FBS), and two weaker conference opponents in Wake and UVA. Their next six games are: @ Va Tech, vs. UNC, @ FSU, vs. Clemson, @ Ga Tech, and vs. Miami. They have a good shot at winning those last two games, but the next four weeks are going to be brutal for that team.

Duke and Kentucky both suck in football.

Kentucky, however, is nowhere near the quality of research institution that Duke is. It's not even close.

They're fundamentally different. The scientific prizes are awarded by scientists in the relevant fields, usually for new results and discoveries. The Peace Prize recipients are picked by a committee of political and cultural figures appointed by the Norwegian parliament, it's more subjective and symbolic, often partisan, and hence more controversial.

The Kentucky rivalry with Duke is so cute to us UNC folks.

But still, anyone who feels that Duke sucks deserves to have a beer bought for them.

As amply illustrated by this year's award. I'm waiting for the year that the Peace Prize is awarded to "The Computer", or "The Endangered Earth", or "You".
